Book excerpt: An urgent, illuminating exploration of the social nature of shame and of how it might be used to promote large-scale political change and social reform. “[Jacquet] exposes the ways shame plays into collective ideas of punishment and reward, and the social mechanisms that dictate the ways we dictate our behavior.” —The Boston Globe Examining how we can retrofit the art of shaming for the age of social media, Jennifer Jacquet shows that we can challenge corporations and even governments to change policies and behaviors that are detrimental to the environment. Urgent and illuminating, Is Shame Necessary? offers an entirely new understanding of how shame, when applied in the right way and at the right time, has the capacity to keep us from failing our planet and, ultimately, from failing ourselves.

Peer-reviewed essays submitted by world-class scholars, graduate students and lay readers alike have drawn worldwide attention, for example, Andrew Radford's "Two on a Tower" (vol IV), & "A Laodicean" (vol V), Michael Rabiger's highly controversial "Hardy and Moule" (vol XIII-ii), Richard Sylvia's dilatory "Henniker/Dillon affair" (Vol XIII-ii), Rosemarie Morgan's outstanding piece of research on "Thomas Hardy Buys a Wife" (vol VIII), Hugh Epstein's, "Vision, Substance and Literary Style in A Laodicean" (vol XIV-i), Herbert Tucker's "At the Bottom Line: How Hardy Tries Conclusions" (Vol XIV-ii), Keith Clavin's "History of Negation: Liberty and Coercion in Jude (Vol XIV-ii), and the entire collection of scholarly essays from the FATHOM conference in Istanbul (2012). More recent issues have featured the incomparable research work of Roy Winnick who has unearthed more than two dozen previously unknown allusion sources in Hardy. Past issues have also included symposia on Hardy and film, Hardy and dance, as well as papers from international Hardy conferences. The Hardy Review also publishes book reviews, selections from TTHA's Poem-of-the-Month seminar and works by acclaimed Living Poets. Book Thomas Hardy s Legal Fictions

Download or read book Thomas Hardy s Legal Fictions written by Trish Ferguson and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2013-08-20 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores Thomas Hardy's engagement with Victorian legal debates in his prose fiction. Thomas Hardy's fiction is examined in this book in the context of the seismic legal reforms of the nineteenth century as well as legal discourse in the literature of the era. The book examines the ways in which Hardy's role as a magistrate and his interest in the law impacted fundamentally on his prose fiction. It demonstrates that throughout his prose fiction Hardy engages with contentious legal issues that were debated by legal professionals and literary figures of his day, and argues that Hardy used fiction as a forum to question the extent to which legal reform improved the lives of women and the working classes. The study also looks at the ways in which Hardy deployed criminal plots derived from sensation fiction and reveals that the genre's engagement with legal reform influenced not only his sensation novel Desperate Remedies (1871) but also the plots of his subsequent fiction.

Book excerpt: F. Paul Wilson's engaging, self-employed, off-the-books fixer, Repairman Jack, returns for another intense, action-packed adventure just a little over the border into the weird, in The Haunted Air. First introduced years ago in the bestseller The Tomb, Jack has been the hero of a series of exciting novels set in and around New York City including Legacies, Conspiracies, All the Rage, and Hosts. "Repairman Jack is a wonderful character, ultracompetent but still vulnerable. Wilson strolls into X-Files territory and makes it his own, keeping the action brisk and the level of suspense steadily rising," said the San Francisco Examiner & Chronicle. In Astoria, Queens, the lively ethnic neighborhood just across the river from Manhattan, a house is being haunted by the ghost of a nine-year-old girl in riding clothes. More than two decades before, she'd been abducted from stables in Brooklyn. Now it's up to Jack to uncover the truth of her story and liberate the pretty, blond spirit. Perhaps the answer is in the odd little store called the Shurio Coppe? Ah, but that would be telling. Jack does things no human being should be able to do, but we watch, in horrified fascination, as the forces of evil seem about to triumph and fill the world with eternal darkness. And then-- but you must read the book. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.
