Download or read book Adventurer written by Leo Damrosch and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fast-paced narrative about the world-famous libertine Giacomo Casanova, from celebrated biographer Leo Damrosch"Fully succeeds in communicating that 'vivid presentness, ' that 'joyful eagerness' for life, which is what keeps us reading Casanova--and reading about him."--Gregory Dowling, Wall Street Journal "A nuanced, deftly contextualized biography of an adventurer, an opportunist, and a man of voracious appetites . . . another top-notch work from Damrosch."--Kirkus Reviews (starred review) The life of the iconic libertine Giacomo Casanova (1725-1798) has never been told in the depth it deserves. An alluring representative of the Enlightenment's shadowy underside, Casanova was an aspiring priest, an army officer, a fortune teller, a con man, a magus, a violinist, a mathematician, a Masonic master, an entrepreneur, a diplomat, a gambler, a spy--and the first to tell his own story. In his vivid autobiography Histoire de Ma Vie, he recorded at least a hundred and twenty love affairs, as well as dramatic sagas of duels, swindles, arrests, and escapes. He knew kings and an empress, Catherine the Great, and most of the famous writers of the time, including Voltaire and Benjamin Franklin. Drawing on seldom used materials, including the original French and Italian primary sources, and probing deeply into the psychology, self-conceptions, and self-deceptions of one of the world's most famous con men and seducers, Leo Damrosch offers a gripping, mature, and devastating account of an Enlightenment man, freed from the bounds of moral convictions.

Book excerpt: Step-by-step practices for cultivating spiritual awakening, from a renowned spiritual psychologist who has studied the phenomenon in hundreds of people and experienced it himself Steve Taylor has devoted his life to investigating spiritual awakening. In his books The Leap and Extraordinary Awakenings, he discussed case histories of dozens of people who experienced profound shifts in consciousness. The Adventure draws on this groundbreaking research, together with Taylor’s own awakening experiences, to offer guided meditations, contemplative exercises, and other practices for catalyzing spiritual transformation, as well as lyric poems and inspirational stories. The Adventure outlines how to: • recognize and cultivate the eight defining characteristics of wakefulness, including presence, acceptance, gratitude, and disidentification from the ego • expand awareness and quiet the mind through meditations and practical exercises • transcend our normal “sleep” state and the “thought mind” to move toward increasing heights and depths of spiritual awakening • use the challenges of everyday life — of home, workplace, and relationships — as doorways to enlightenment

Download or read book The Adventure of Self Coaching written by Ian Kyburz and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2014-01-02 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover and tap your full potential Self-Coaching is the steering of one’s own self-development in a mindful and conscious way. The mindful Self-Coaching approach builds on creating an Inner Coach and mindful companion. With a serene mind-set this can build a creative inner dialogue that reveals hidden potential, unused resources and paves the way to achieve self-development goals. This book explains Self-Coaching and how to develop Self-Coaching skills. Why you might be interested in this book: Since years we’ve been learning to better manage our time, prioritise and order tasks, etc. This is termed self-management. The related required methods and tools have become standard today. In spite of these methods and tools and our good intentions, goals, tasks, schedules, and prioritizations we are still not achieving what we intended. Why? It is as though there is someone in us who has different goals and is not disclosing them. Over time, we realize that we cannot simply manage ourselves because there is a lot more inside affecting us than we can consciously perceive. It is therefore worthwhile to consider oneself mindfully and address the facets, layers, impulses, feelings and subconscious brain activity that make up our personas. Even better is to be a mindful and supportive companion (coach). This book teaches the reader how to adopt mindfulness and apply it to active self-development.

Download or read book The Thinking Space written by Leona Rittner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cafe is not only a place to enjoy a cup of coffee, it is also a space - distinct from its urban environment - in which to reflect and take part in intellectual debate. Since the eighteenth century in Europe, intellectuals and artists have gathered in cafes to exchange ideas, inspirations and information that has driven the cultural agenda for Europe and the world. Without the café, would there have been a Karl Marx or a Jean-Paul Sartre? The café as an institutional site has been the subject of renewed interest amongst scholars in the past decade, and its role in the development of art, ideas and culture has been explored in some detail. However, few have investigated the ways in which cafés create a cultural and intellectual space which brings together multiple influences and intellectual practices and shapes the urban settings of which they are a part. This volume presents an international group of scholars who consider cafés as sites of intellectual discourse from across Europe during the long modern period. Drawing on literary theory, history, cultural studies and urban studies, the contributors explore the ways in which cafes have functioned and evolved at crucial moments in the histories of important cities and countries - notably Paris, Vienna and Italy. Choosing these sites allows readers to understand both the local particularities of each café while also seeing the larger cultural connections between these places. By revealing how the café operated as a unique cultural context within the urban setting, this volume demonstrates how space and ideas are connected. As our global society becomes more focused on creativity and mobility the intellectual cafés of past generations can also serve as inspiration for contemporary and future knowledge workers who will expand and develop this tradition of using and thinking in space.
