Download or read book How the Idea of Religious Toleration Came to the West written by Perez Zagorin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious intolerance, so terrible and deadly in its recent manifestations, is nothing new. In fact, until after the eighteenth century, Christianity was perhaps the most intolerant of all the great world religions. How Christian Europe and the West went from this extreme to their present universal belief in religious toleration is the momentous story fully told for the first time in this timely and important book by a leading historian of early modern Europe. Perez Zagorin takes readers to a time when both the Catholic Church and the main new Protestant denominations embraced a policy of endorsing religious persecution, coercing unity, and, with the state's help, mercilessly crushing dissent and heresy. This position had its roots in certain intellectual and religious traditions, which Zagorin traces before showing how out of the same traditions came the beginnings of pluralism in the West. Here we see how sixteenth- and seventeenth-century thinkers--writing from religious, theological, and philosophical perspectives--contributed far more than did political expediency or the growth of religious skepticism to advance the cause of toleration. Reading these thinkers--from Erasmus and Sir Thomas More to John Milton and John Locke, among others--Zagorin brings to light a common, if unexpected, thread: concern for the spiritual welfare of religion itself weighed more in the defense of toleration than did any secular or pragmatic arguments. His book--which ranges from England through the Netherlands, the post-1685 Huguenot Diaspora, and the American Colonies--also exposes a close connection between toleration and religious freedom. A far-reaching and incisive discussion of the major writers, thinkers, and controversies responsible for the emergence of religious tolerance in Western society--from the Enlightenment through the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights--this original and richly nuanced work constitutes an essential chapter in the intellectual history of the modern world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Toleration, Under the Later Stuarts The following essay is one of two to which the Prince Consort Prize was awarded in 1910, and is now published in accordance with the prescribed regulations, With the permission of the examiners I have made certain alterations in preparing it for the press, considerably expanding the first chapter, and adding a final chapter of recapitulation and summary. Also a large number of minor alterations and additions have been made. Thus the essay is somewhat increased in bulk, but it has undergone no essential change in substance or structure. In dealing with the actual controversy between the years 1660 and 1714, as distinct from the intellectual tendencies which led up to it, I have presented the views of writers as far as possible in their own words, and have as a rule tried to bring forward all the main arguments for toleration used in the particular work under consideration, whether they had been employed in an earlier work or not. Download or read book Toleration and the Constitution written by David A. J. Richards and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1989-04-06 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why have the issues of religious liberty, free speech and constitutional privacy come to figure so prominently in our society? What are the origins of the basic principles of our constitutional law? This work develops a general theory of constitutional interpretation based on an original synthesis of political theory, history, law, and a larger approach to the interpretation of culture. Presenting both historical and theoretical arguments in support of a theory that affirms the moral sovereignty of the people, Richards maintains that toleration, or respect for conscience and individual freedom, is the central constitutional ideal. He discusses such current topics of constitutional controversy as church-state relations, the scope of free speech, and the application of the constitutional right to privacy, to abortion, and consensual adult sexual relations.

Download or read book Milton s Scriptural Reasoning written by Phillip J. Donnelly and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Milton's major poems have long provoked wide-ranging judgements about the purposes of his biblical engagement. In this elegant and insightful study, Phillip J. Donnelly transforms our common perceptions about Milton's writing. He challenges the traditional assumption that the poet shared our modern view that reason is a capacity whose purpose is to control nature. Instead, Milton's conception of reason - both human and divine - is bound up with a poetic sense of difference, a capacity for being faithful to a goodness and beauty that survives the effects of human frailty in the fall. Providing fresh new readings of Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained and Samson Agonistes, Donnelly gives us important new perspectives on Milton's aesthetics, theology and politics.

Download or read book Voltaire Treatise on Tolerance written by Voltaire and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voltaire is widely known as the author of a literary masterpiece, Candide, while his reputation as a thinker rests largely on his Philosophical Letters and Philosophical Dictionary. He is equally renowned as a critic of the forces of superstition and fanaticism, and a champion of freedom of thought and belief. The works presented here, in a new English translation, are among the most important and characteristic texts of the Enlightenment, and bring together all three aspects of Voltaire: the writer, the doer and the philosophe. Originating in Voltaire's campaign to exonerate Jean Calas, they are works of polemical brilliance, informed by his deism and humanism and by Enlightenment values and ideals more generally. The issues which they raise, concerning questions of tolerance and human dignity, are still highly relevant to our own times. This volume presents them together with an introduction by Simon Harvey and useful notes on further reading.
