Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The island is a powerful metaphor in everyday speech which extends almost naturally into several academic disciplines, including musicology. Islands are imagined as isolated and unique places where strange, exotic, different and unexpected treasures can be found by daring adventurers. The magic inherent within this positioning of islands as places of discovery is an aspect which permeates the theoretical, methodological and analytical boundaries of this edited book. Showcasing the breadth of current musicological research in Australia and New Zealand, this edited collection offers a range of subtle and innovative reflections on this concept both in established and well-charted territories of music research.

Book Becoming a Garamut Player in Baluan Papua New Guinea

Download or read book Becoming a Garamut Player in Baluan Papua New Guinea written by Tony Lewis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The garamut is a log idiophone that is found in many of the coastal and island areas of Papua New Guinea. The instrument’s primary use is as a speech surrogate and in some regions the garamut is also used in large ensembles to play complex music for dancing. In Baluan Island, within the Manus Province, this style of garamut playing is comparatively highly developed. This book follows the author’s processes and methods in learning to play the music of the garamut, to the level at which he became accepted as a garamut player by the people of Baluan. Lewis argues that analysis is essential in learning to play the rapid tempi and complex rhythms of Baluan garamut music, in a cultural context where there is no formal teaching process for the music. The transcription and analysis of the Baluan garamut repertoire is the centrepiece of this study, reflecting the cognitive structures of the learning process, and revealing the inner workings of the music’s complexity as well as a striking beauty of form and structure. The book concludes with reflections on the process of a ‘cultural outsider’ becoming a garamut player in Baluan and on the role of musical analysis in that process, on the ethnomusicologist’s role in transmission of the music, and on the nature of continuity and change in a musical society such as Baluan.

Book Christianity Conflict and Renewal in Australia and the Pacific

Download or read book Christianity Conflict and Renewal in Australia and the Pacific written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural expressions of Christianity show great diversity around the globe. While scholarship has tended to consider charismatic practices in distinct geographical contexts, this volume advances the anthropology of Christianity through ethnographically rich, comparative insights from across the Australia-Pacific region. Christianity, Conflict, and Renewal in Australia and the Pacific presents new perspectives on the performative dynamics of Christian belief, conflict, and renewal. Addressing experiences of cultural and spiritual renewal, contributors reveal how tensions can arise between spiritual and political expressions of culture and identity, opening up alternative spaces for spiritual realization and religious change. These local processes further mobilize responses of individuals and groups to state forces and political reforms, in turn, influencing the shape of translocal and transnational Christian practices. Contributors are: Diane Austin-Broos, John Barker, Alison Dundon, Yannick Fer, Kirsty Gillespie, Jessica Hardin, Rodolfo Maggio, Fiona Magowan, Gwendoline Malogne-Fer, Debra McDougall, Joel Robbins, Carolyn Schwarz, and John Taylor.

Book excerpt: This book is a musical ethnography of the Duna people of Papua New Guinea. A people who have experienced extraordinary social change in recent history, their musical traditions have also radically changed during this time. New forms of music have been introduced, while ancestral traditions have been altered or even abandoned. This study shows how, through musical creativity, Duna people maintain a connection with their past, and their identity, whilst simultaneously embracing the challenges of the present.

Oceanic Music Encounters - the Print Resource and the Human Resource. The authors include colleagues and former students of an academic who was a practising ethnomusicologist only three years after the term was coined. Although most of his university career was spent at the University of Auckland, Mervyn's influence in the fields of Pacific music research and archiving were such that the contributions in this volume arc the result of both distant reputation and personal acquaintance. The volume is the product of the Study Group on Musics of Oceania within the International Council for Traditional Music, of which Mervyn has been a member for many years. The volume title is intended to encompass the span of Mervyn's professional interests, which include the role of archives in Oceanic music research and performance; material culture collections in music research and performance; the role of transcription in music research and performance; the importance of bibliographic research in tracing the connections between the past and the present; the significance of collaboration in research, particularly with scholars in other disciplines, and its significance to performance; and the colonial encounter and its implications for historical and contemporary performance.

Book Continuing Education in Music Ministry of the Atlantic Union Conference of the Seventh day Adventist Church

Download or read book Continuing Education in Music Ministry of the Atlantic Union Conference of the Seventh day Adventist Church written by Rafael Rodriguez Chalas and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Abstract: Previous studies of Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) music have explored theological foundations, historical roots, and administrative challenges of the music ministry. However, these past studies did not assess the continuing education of the SDA music ministers, or provide Adventist research-based strategies for improving the professional development of SDA music ministers. Thus, this investigation sought to evaluate the continuing education needs of the music ministry in the Seventh-day Adventist churches of the Atlantic Union Conference, consisting of the northeastern states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and the territory of Bermuda. Utilizing a quantitative, descriptive research design, a total of 552 SDA churches were surveyed. The researcher identified, located, and invited 138 music ministers from those churches to complete an online questionnaire. The study investigated music ministers' demographic profiles, educational backgrounds, music and worship practices, and their reported needs for continuing education. Specifically, the study examined music ministers' preferred topics and methods in pursuing continuing education, their perceptions and beliefs regarding the adequacy, effectiveness, relevance, and support of the music ministry, and reported obstacles that prevent them from receiving continuing education.Among other findings, music ministers chose the top three topics they most needed: appropriate music for various worship styles; singing techniques; and where to find literature and resources. Nearly half of respondents preferred to receive continuing education by attending workshops, seminars, and clinics. The top three out of ten reported obstacles to receiving continuing education were time commitments, financial constraints, and unavailable local church funding. Some of the recommendations of the study included increasing offerings of workshops and clinics directed to Adventist music ministers, establishing worship and music offices within the local conferences to support and coordinate music ministry, and providing opportunities for intercommunication among music ministers, such as internet forums that promote collaboration and continuing education. This study has enabled music ministers to reflect upon and express their continuing professional and educational needs as they strive to make greater musical and educational contributions to their churches.
