Book excerpt: The important and rich collection of medieval plays from Cornwall has, in the past, been all but ignored by the majority of drama historians and critics. In this book, Sydney Higgins shows why this is a mistaken and ill-informed view. The oldest of the three surviving manuscripts is the Cornish Cycle - performed on three consecutive days - that is probably the earliest surviving British drama script. Next is 'Buenans Meriasek' ('The Life of St. Meriasek') that is the only full-length medieval saint's play to have survived in the literature of Great Britain. The last of the three, 'The Creation of the World' is the first day of another Biblical play. In the manuscript of the Cornish Cycle, there is a plan of the theatre for each of the three days and there are two similar ones in 'St. Meriasek'. Apart from these five, the only other other plan of a British medieval theatre that has survived is of 'The Castle of Perseverance'. Like those for the Cornish plays, it is circular. Among the many important conclusions in the detailed and meticulously researched examination of the staging of the Cornish plays is that the medieval circular theatres are far more likely to have been the inspiration for the circular theatres of Shakespeare's age than the highly unlikely notion that their origin arose from a pageant waggon being parked in a rectangular inn yard. * * * Winner of the 2014 HOLYER AN GOF PUBLISHERS' AWARD for Non-Fiction - History, Language and Creative Arts. * * * This reviewer found of particular interest Sydney Higgins's lucid reconstruction of the playing in the round. Book The Theatre of D H Lawrence

Download or read book The Theatre of D H Lawrence written by James Moran and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first major book-length study for four decades to examine the plays written by D. H. Lawrence, and the first ever book to give an in-depth analysis of Lawrence's interaction with the theatre industry during the early twentieth century. It connects and examines his performance texts, and explores his reaction to a wide-range of theatre (from the sensation dramas of working-class Eastwood to the ritual performances of the Pueblo people) in order to explain Lawrence's contribution to modern drama. F. R. Leavis influentially labelled the writer 'D. H. Lawrence: Novelist'. But this book foregrounds Lawrence's career as a playwright, exploring unfamiliar contexts and manuscripts, and drawing particular attention to his three most successful works: The Widowing of Mrs Holroyd, The Daughter-in-Law, and A Collier's Friday Night. It examines how Lawrence's novels are suffused with theatrical thinking, revealing how Lawrence's fictions – from his first published work to the last story that he wrote before his death – continually take inspiration from the playhouse. The book also argues that, although Lawrence has sometimes been dismissed as a restrictively naturalistic stage writer, his overall oeuvre shows a consistent concern with theatrical experiment, and manifests affinities with the dramatic thinking of modernist figures including Brecht, Artaud, and Joyce. In a final section, the book includes contributions from influential theatre-makers who have taken their own cue from Lawrence's work, and who have created original work that consciously follows Lawrence in making working-class life central to the public forum of the theatre stage.

Book Amazing Theaters of the World

Download or read book Amazing Theaters of the World written by Dominic Connolly and published by Amber Books. This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrated with stunning photographs, Amazing Theaters of the World includes more than 150 of the most stunning theaters and opera houses around the globe, such as the Delacorte Theater in NYC, Oslo Opera House in Norway, and Teatro di San Carlo in Italy. The theater comes in many forms. Originating in the more rigid and repeated (but no less attractive) designs of Greek and Roman theaters, the buildings that now house our shared cultural output boast some of the finest, most creative structures in the world. Whether they are huge and cathedral-like or modest, concrete and futuristic, or neo-Renaissance, the physical constructions themselves capture the ambition of the arts performed within. With chapters organized by continent and featuring theaters and opera houses--and any space devoted to the performing arts--from the Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe and Australasia, Amazing Theaters of the World includes modern masterpieces and ancient remains, art deco delights and Baroque classics, taking in centuries of theater building. Both the exterior and the interior of buildings are examined, with behind-the-scenes shots of dressing rooms and a look at the mechanics of putting on a show. In so doing, we catch a glimpse of how the performing arts and their homes have evolved over time.
