Book The Theatre Guild Anthology Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Theatre Guild Anthology Classic Reprint written by Theatre Guild Board of Directors and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07 with total page 1024 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theatre Guild Anthology The Theatre Guild was founded on December 19, 1918, without a theatre, without a play, without an actor and without a scrap of scenery. Its sole artistic asset was an idea. If, in the years that have intervened, the Guild has achieved success, it is be cause the idea, revolutionary, has withstood the revolution it created and is still a driving force as potent as it was at the start. The idea is simple. It is merely that the theatre itself is bigger than any of the workers in it and that it should be employed for the creation of the finest drama of the time, drama definitely and honestly reflecting the author's vision of life or sense of style and beauty. Book Jean Toomer and the Terrors of American History

Download or read book Jean Toomer and the Terrors of American History written by Charles Scruggs and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean Toomer's Cane was the first major text of the Harlem Renaissance and the first important modernist text by an African-American writer. It powerfully depicts the terror in the history of American race relations, a public world of lynchings, race riots, and Jim Crow, and a private world of internalized conflict over identity and race which mirrored struggles in the culture at large. Toomer's own life reflected that internal conflict, and he has been an ambiguous figure in literary history, an author who wrote a text that had a tremendous impact on African American authors but who eventually tried to distance himself from Cane and from his identification as a black writer. In Jean Toomer and the Terrors of American History, Charles Scruggs and Lee VanDemarr examine original sources—Toomer's rediscovered early writings on politics and race, his extensive correspondence with Waldo Frank, and unpublished portions of his autobiographies—to show how the cultural wars of the 1920s influenced the shaping of Toomer's book and his subsequent efforts to escape the racial definitions of American society. That those definitions remain crucial for American society even today is one reason Toomer's work continues to fascinate and to influence contemporary writers and readers.

Book The Broadview Anthology of Medieval Drama

Download or read book The Broadview Anthology of Medieval Drama written by Christina M. Fitzgerald and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2012-12-05 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past generation has been an extraordinarily active one in medieval drama scholarship; our appreciation of the range of medieval drama has been significantly broadened, and our understanding of certain medieval genres—most notably, biblical drama—has been fundamentally altered. The Broadview Anthology of British Literature has been widely praised for the degree to which it has taken this scholarship into account in its selection of and presentation of medieval plays. Now Broadview launches a new anthology that takes those plays as its base while expanding very substantially beyond them to represent the full range of drama in English (and, where strong connections exist, in French, Latin, Cornish, and Welsh as well) through to 1576. In all, over forty plays are included. Each work has been fully annotated and is prefaced by a substantial introduction. In many cases the language is to some extent modernized in order to make the plays more accessible to readers today.
