Book excerpt: How could I be going to Hell? What I was experiencing messed with my theology to a radically uncomfortable degree. The Holy Spirit was making sure I would never be the same again. Mission accomplished. The Terror of Hell is a shocking true story of awakening. The contrast between the horror of Hell and the overwhelming wonder of intimacy with the Lover of our souls is stunning.

Book Maps of Heaven Maps of Hell

Download or read book Maps of Heaven Maps of Hell written by Edward J. Ingebretsen and published by M.E. Sharpe. This book was released on 1996 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ingebretsen (English, Georgetown U.) poses an interesting question in his introduction, "Why does Milton's Satan have all the best lines?" A glance at the bestsellers list shows that king of horror Stephen King tops the charts with five books. Americans obviously love to be scared out of their wits because, the author argues, our puritanical theology demands fear to attain conversion, and the writings of Cotton Mather, Hawthorne, Frost, and King are the relics of this collective memory. Tracing themes of captivity, expiation, self-loss, and possession, the volume provides an entertaining analysis of American literature and cultural identity. Paper edition (unseen), $19.95. Book A Treatise on Hell s Terror

Download or read book A Treatise on Hell s Terror written by Christopher Love and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2012-11-26 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a treatise on one of the most hated doctrines in the Bible; a treatise on "hell." Love uses the text, “But rather fear Him which is able to destroy both body and soul in hell,” Matthew 10:28, as a foundation for all his queries and answers to this most dreadful subject. Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758), one the greatest preachers to ever live, kept a copy of Love’s works on hell in his library due to the graphic description and important nature of Love’s exposition. The weighty subject matter is presented in such a lively style and is so carefully applied that readers cannot help but be edified whether they are Christians or not. It is, without a doubt, one of the best works on hell ever written. This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book The Justice of God in the Damnation of Sinners

Download or read book The Justice of God in the Damnation of Sinners written by Jonathan Edwards and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-06-08 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A crime is more or less heinous, according as we are under greater or less obligations to the contrary. This is self-evident; because it is herein that the criminalness or faultiness of any thing consists, that it is contrary to what we are obliged or bound to, or what ought to be in us. So the faultiness of one being hating another, is in proportion to his obligation to love him. The crime of one being despising and casting contempt on another, is proportionably more or less heinous, as he was under greater or less obligations to honour him. The fault of disobeying another, is greater or less, as any one is under greater or less obligations to obey him. And therefore if there be any being that we are under infinite obligations to love, and honour, and obey, the contrary towards him must be infinitely faulty. Our obligation to love, honour, and obey any being, is in proportion to his loveliness, honourableness, and authority; for that is the very meaning of the words. When we say any one is very lovely, it is the same as to say, that he is one very much to be loved. Or if we say such a one is more honourable than another, the meaning of the words is, that he is one that we are more obliged to honour. If we say any one has great authority over us, it is the same as to say, that he has great right to our subjection and obedience. But God is a being infinitely lovely, because he hath infinite excellency and beauty. To have infinite excellency and beauty, is the same thing as to have infinite loveliness. He is a being of infinite greatness, majesty, and glory; and therefore he is infinitely honourable. He is infinitely exalted above the greatest potentates of the earth, and highest angels in heaven; and therefore he is infinitely more honourable than they. His authority over us is infinite; and the ground of his right to our obedience is infinitely strong; for he is infinitely worthy to be obeyed himself, and we have an absolute, universal, and infinite dependence upon him. So that sin against God, being a violation of infinite obligations, must be a crime infinitely heinous, and so deserving of infinite punishment.- Nothing is more agreeable to the common sense of mankind, than that sins committed against any one, must be proportionably heinous to the dignity of the being offended and abused; as it is also agreeable to the word of God, I Samuel 2:25. "If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him;" (i.e. shall judge him, and inflict a finite punishment, such as finite judges can inflict;) "but if a man sin against the Lord, who shall entreat for him?" This was the aggravation of sin that made Joseph afraid of it. Genesis 39:9. "How shall I commit this great wickedness, and sin against God?" This was the aggravation of David's sin, in comparison of which he esteemed all others as nothing, because they were infinitely exceeded by it. Psalm 51:4. "Against thee, thee only have I sinned."-The eternity of the punishment of ungodly men renders it infinite: and it renders it no more than infinite; and therefore renders no more than proportionable to the heinousness of what they are guilty of.

Book What the Hell Did I Just Read

Download or read book What the Hell Did I Just Read written by David Wong and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's the story "They" don't want you to read. Though, to be fair, "They" are probably right about this one. To quote the Bible, "Learning the truth can be like loosening a necktie, only to realize it was the only thing keeping your head attached." No, don't put the book back on the shelf -- it is now your duty to purchase it to prevent others from reading it. Yes, it works with e-books, too, I don't have time to explain how. While investigating a fairly straightforward case of a shape-shifting interdimensional child predator, Dave, John and Amy realized there might actually be something weird going on. Together, they navigate a diabolically convoluted maze of illusions, lies, and their own incompetence in an attempt to uncover a terrible truth they -- like you -- would be better off not knowing. Your first impulse will be to think that a story this gruesome -- and, to be frank, stupid -- cannot possibly be true. That is precisely the reaction "They" are hoping for. John Dies at the End's "smart take on fear manages to tap into readers' existential dread on one page, then have them laughing the next" (Publishers Weekly) and This Book is Full of Spiders was "unlike any other book of the genre" (Washington Post). Now, New York Times bestselling author David Wong is back with What the Hell Did I Just Read, the third installment of this black-humored thriller series.

Book Heaven and Hell

Download or read book Heaven and Hell written by Bart D. Ehrman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over half of Americans believe in a literal heaven, in a literal hell. Most people who hold these beliefs are Christian and assume they are the age-old teachings of the Bible. Ehrman shows that eternal rewards and punishments are found nowhere in the Old Testament, and are not what Jesus or his disciples taught. He recounts the long history of the afterlife, ranging from The Epic of Gilgamesh up to the writings of Augustine, focusing especially on the teachings of Jesus and his early followers. Ehrman shows that competing views were intimately connected with the social, cultural, and historical worlds out of which they emerged. -- adapted from jacket

Book Heaven s Glory

  • Author : Christopher Love
  • Publisher : Puritan Publications
  • Release : 2017-04-04
  • ISBN : 1626632170
  • Pages : 215 pages

Download or read book Heaven s Glory written by Christopher Love and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The springboard for this entire work is the verse, “When Christ who is our life shall appear, then shall we also appear with Him in glory,” (Colossians 3:4). Why should the Christian have a hope of heaven? What may be expected there? What is Christ’s role there right now and how will the Christian interact with Him before the throne of God? What does it mean that Christ is glorious, and how will his appearing usher in with great glory the heavenly state for all those who trust in him? Nothing has greater influence into a Christian’s practice here in this world than the serious consideration of our everlasting estate in the world to come— the glory and happiness which is prepared for the elect in Christ. The scope of this work is to discover to the Christian those unspeakable joys which are set before us, that we may press forward toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Love explains what is meant when Christ is said to be our life; second, what is meant when it says that Christ our life shall appear. And lastly, what is meant that we will also appear with him in glory. These are his main ideas in explaining heaven’s glory. Love shows that these words are quickening and encouraging having respect to the recompense of reward for the believers who will have such an entrance ministered unto them into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. So, what will heaven be like? This work answers that question almost exhaustively. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.
