Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tendring Hundred in the Olden Time: A Series of Sketches It has been no secret in the Tendring Hundred that the writer of the following Sketches has for some years past written a variety of papers upon sporting and other matters; many of them described as "In" and "Out of the Saddle." The "Tendring Hundred" Papers were commenced for a few "Out-of-the-Saddle" Sketches; but as they proceeded in a serial form, so many communications were received, and so much interest seemed to be excited by them, that the writer was induced to extend his researches, and go far deeper into the subject than he originally intended. And now, at the particular request of many friends, he has enlarged the Sketches, added notes, and brought down particulars of several families to a later date, for publication in the present form. In the first Sketch issued he stated that he should not confine himself to any particular or classified form of procedure, but should fix his "meets" at the best authorities, and make the running as the scent might carry him. He has not, therefore, taken the parishes alphabetically, but just as they seemed best to illustrate any particular custom, old form of tenure, or any other point of ancient history that he had in hand, or desired to illustrate. Book Country houses and the British Empire 1700 1930

Download or read book Country houses and the British Empire 1700 1930 written by Stephanie Barczewski and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Country houses and the British empire, 1700–1930 assesses the economic and cultural links between country houses and the Empire between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries. Using sources from over fifty British and Irish archives, it enables readers to better understand the impact of the empire upon the British metropolis by showing both the geographical variations and its different cultural manifestations. Barczewski offers a rare scholarly analysis of the history of country houses that goes beyond an architectural or biographical study, and recognises their importance as the physical embodiments of imperial wealth and reflectors of imperial cultural influences. In so doing, she restores them to their true place of centrality in British culture over the last three centuries, and provides fresh insights into the role of the Empire in the British metropolis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many will have heard of the ghostly white lady haunting Tavistock – the notorious Mary Howard, accused of murdering her four husbands. A few may know the true story of her lover, George Cutteford, a Plymouth 'cutty man' who became a Puritan lawyer. Cutteford was imprisoned in the horror of Lydford Gaol, persecuted by Mary's fourth husband - Sir Richard Grenville, the most notorious and sadistic royalist General of the Civil War. But fewer still will know the secrets George Cutteford died to protect - secrets that would destroy his own family; end Grenville’s career in shame; and make a boy with no name the richest landowner in Devon. Gathered from the varying historical accounts, and including primary material unearthed, hundreds of years ago, in an old fish market in London, comes this haunting true story of love, treachery and revenge in seventeenth-century Devon.
