Book The Ten Year War

Download or read book The Ten Year War written by Jonathan Cohn and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Cohn's The Ten Year War is the definitive account of the battle over Obamacare, based on interviews with sources who were in the room, from one of the nation's foremost healthcare journalists. The Affordable Care Act, better known as “Obamacare,” was the most sweeping and consequential piece of legislation of the last half century. It has touched nearly every American in one way or another, for better or worse, and become the defining political fight of our time. In The Ten Year War, veteran journalist Jonathan Cohn offers the compelling, authoritative history of how the law came to be, why it looks like it does, and what it’s meant for average Americans. Drawn from hundreds of hours of interviews, plus private diaries, emails and memos, The Ten Year War takes readers to Capitol Hill and to town hall meetings, inside the West Wing and, eventually, into Trump Tower, as the nation's most powerful leaders try to reconcile pragmatism and idealism, self-interest and the public good, and ultimately two very different visions for what the country should look like. At the heart of the book is the decades-old argument over what’s wrong with American health care and how to fix it. But the battle over healthcare was always about more than policy. The Ten Year War offers a deeper examination of how our governing institutions, the media and the two parties have evolved, and the dysfunction those changes have left in their wake.

Lindsay, Abraham Beame, and Edward I. Koch. Much of this encyclopedic work focuses on New York's ever-present financial woes, including the financial crisis of the mid-1970s, when the City had an unaudited deficit of over a billion dollars and the public credit markets closed their doors.

Download or read book Frontier Society written by R.A.J. van Lier and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-01-22 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic study was originally published in 1949 in Dutch as Samenleving in een grensgebied. This English translation is based on a second revised Dutch edition from 1971. The point of departure is J.S. Furnivall’s concept of ‘plural society’ to sketch the historical development of Suriname. The author focuses on the social relations that determined life in the colony. In the final part, discussing the period from the abolition of slavery to World War II, relatively more attention is given to the Creoles or Afro-Surinamese than to the populations of Asian descent, because the influence exercised by the Creole group during that period was predominant.

Book Drinking Water Principles And Practices

Download or read book Drinking Water Principles And Practices written by Hans J C Van Dijk and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006-11-24 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume provides a comprehensive overview of all the major aspects of modern drinking water systems in the western European context. It not only covers the theoretical principles, but also the historical background and practical aspects of design and operation, legislation, planning and finance of drinking water supply in its social and economic context. The principles and practices are illustrated using experiences from The Netherlands. The Dutch drinking water supply is well known for its multiple barrier systems and high technical standards. The Dutch drinking water is of high quality and does not contain chlorine, and the Dutch therefore readily drink tap water and do not see the need to buy bottled water or in-house filters, with their drawbacks on national economics, public health and the environment. This illustrative overview can be used as a reference for other countries and regions.

Book Development Planning

Book excerpt: Developing countries' economists and civil servants will find no other handbook on their job so readable and succinct"The Economist "probably the most useful book which has ever been written to show how a plan is made and what the policy requirements are for its implementation"International Affairs Many books have been published on the theory of economic development, but very little has appeared on how a Development Plan is made, what the chief snags are and what distinguishes good planning from bad. The emphasis throughout the book is on policy, although the basic techniques for making a Plan are illustrated. Much information is tabulated for ease of reading.

Book Defence equipment 2010

Download or read book Defence equipment 2010 written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Defence Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-03-04 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability of the Defence Equipment and Support organisation within the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to deliver the equipment programme is overshadowed by the existence of a funding gap which the NAO estimates could be as much as £36 billion over the next ten years. Both the National Audit Office "Major Projects Report 2009" (HC 85-I, session 2009-10, ISBN 9780102963342) and Bernard Gray's "Review of Acquisition" for the MoD have confirmed that the MoD's ten year equipment programme is unaffordable. Furthermore the MoD's practice of delaying projects so as to reduce costs in the early years of a programme is adding to overall procurement costs and so further increases the funding gap. The MoD has apparently made no attempt to calculate the full extent of the costs of delays and it has taken decisions to delay projects without understanding the full implications of those decisions. The report examines: progress on the many key programmes; defence research spending (declining from £540 million in 2007-08 to £471 million in 2009-10 and will decrease further in 2010-11 to £439 million); the response to and implementation of the Gray report; balancing the equipment programme and the use of regular Strategic Defence Reviews to maintain an up-to-date strategic context for the equipment programme; clarifying roles and accountabilities, including better leadership and decision-making; injecting key skills and tools into DE&S.

Download or read book The Sword of Damocles written by Jon Kofas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-06-30 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on Chile and Colombia during the 1950s and 1960s, Kofas examines the impact of IMF, World Bank, and U.S. foreign policy on the economies and social and political institutions of Latin America. Far from fostering democracy and social justice, foreign loans and aid were major impediments to these ideals. Symptomatic of systematic underdevelopment, cyclical Third World foreign borrowing and debt crises have been responsible for maintaining the debtor nations integrated into the global market economy, perpetuating their dependency, and maintaining low living standards. Comparing Colombia and Chile, the book examines the complex factors of domestic and international forces that account for structural underdevelopment in the Third World. A study on the historical antecedents of globalism and its impact on the Third World, this book analyzes the interplay between IMF, World Bank, and U.S. foreign policy in shaping the economies of the Third World through loans that are the catalyst to global integration. Through its in-depth look at a complex topic, this book will prove provocative and valuable reading to students of globalization, inter-American relations, international finance, Latin American History, and U.S. diplomatic history.
