Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition of the Ten Commandments Therefore, that we might be informed what we ought to do and What to avoid, it hath pleased God, the great Governor and righteous Judge of all, to prescribe laws for the regulating of our actions and, that we might not be ignorant what they are, he hath openly promulgated them in his word. For when we had miserably defaced the law of nature originally written in our hearts, so that many of its commands were no longer legible, it seemed good to his infinite wisdom and mercy to transcribe and copy out that law in the sacred tables of the Scriptures; and to superadd many positive precepts and injunctions not before imposed. Hence the Bible is the statute-book of God's kingdom, wherein is comprised the Whole body of the heavenly law, the perfect rules of a holy life, and the sure promises of a glorious one. Book The Decalogue

Download or read book The Decalogue written by Robert Gillan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Decalogue: A Series of Discourses on the Ten Commandments That portion of Scripture on which we are about to enter is universally known, and is more frequently repeated than any other except our Lord's Prayer. And yet it has been rarely selected as a topic for distinct discussion. So much of what has been written on it, labours under the disadvantage of a diction, which is somewhat obsolete. So much more is found in forms and combinations which render the remarks so far inaccessible to the general reader. Then, the recent publications on the Decalogue, professing a more popular tendency, are few; and hitherto, at least so far as ascertained, these seem to have migrated in small numbers to this part of the country. The Commandments, indeed, are excellently defined in sundry Catechisms, and learnedly explained in many Commentaries; but these, though invaluable, do not satisfy the larger wish of the soul. In such circumstances, the Author has been induced to issue the present Volume - to reproduce through the press what, with many emendations, was first delivered from the pulpit. The aspect of morality, as now seen in politics, in commerce, and in common life, has farther prompted him to undertake the commanded duty of "crying aloud, and not sparing, while showing the people their transgressions, and the house of Jacob their sins." First, let us observe the importance of having such a form at all as the Lord's Prayer left to us by the Founder of our faith. It was said once by a Scottish statesman, Give to any one you like the making of a nation's laws - give me the making of their ballads and songs, and that will tell us the mind of the nation. So it might be said, Give to any one you like the making of a Church's creed - or a Church's decrees or rubrics give me the making of its prayers, and that will tell us the mind of the Church or religious community. We have in this Prayer the one public universal prayer of Christendom. It contains the purest wishes, the highest hopes, the tenderest aspirations which our Master put into the mouth of His followers. It is the rule of our worship, the guide of our. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ten Commandments: A Course of Lectures Delivered Before the University of Pennsylvania In the autumn of 1888, the Provost and Deans of the Faculties of the University of Pennsylvania honored the writer with the request to deliver before the students "a series of Sunday Afternoon Addresses upon Religious Topics." In acceding to this request, the writer, believing the Ten Commandments to be the foundation-stones of Authoritative Morality or True Society, selected them for the theme of his lectures. These Commandments, being in their nature so fundamental, germinal, and immortal, have, of course, occupied much of the writer's reflections during a ministry of more than thirty years. Accordingly, he feels justified in incorporating into this book certain thoughts and words which have appeared elsewhere. The Scriptural citations are almost uniformly from the Revised Version. In venturing to send forth this volume, the author humbly prays that Almighty God may be pleased to bless it to the moral elevation of the young people of Christendom. Book The Ten Commandments

Download or read book The Ten Commandments written by David Hazony and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-09-07 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part memoir, part scholarship, part manifesto for a vital approach to life, David Hazony’s book tackles some of the most painful human questions that stand at the heart of who we are as modern, thinking people and offers answers that are sure to start a new discussion about the meaning of one of our most enduring, yet least understood, traditions. Across the Western World, the Ten Commandments have become a source of both inspiration and controversy, whether in Supreme Court rulings, in film and literature, or as a religious icon gracing houses of worship of every Christian and Jewish denomination. But what do the commandments really stand for? According to polls, less than half of all Americans can even name more than four of them. Fewer still can name all ten or have a clear idea of the ideals they were meant to promote. For most of us, agnostics and faithful alike, they have been relegated to the level of a symbol, and the teachings they contain are all but forgotten. In Western life today, the Ten Commandments are everywhere— except where we need them most. In The Ten Commandments, David Hazony offers a powerful new look at our most venerable moral text. Combining a fresh reading of the Old Testament’s most riveting stories and ancient rabbinic legends with a fearless exploration of what ails society today, Hazony shows that the Ten Commandments are not just a set of obscure laws but encapsulate a deeply valuable approach to life—one that is as relevant now as it was when they first appeared more than two millennia ago.
