    Book Details:

Download or read book The Temptation to Tango written by Irene D. Thomas and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You are invited to tango, the world's most sensual and intimate dance, through the stories and memoirs of two American tangueros. The Temptation to Tango: Journeys of Intimacy and Desire will take you where no other book on tango ever has. Short fictional pieces enter the world of tango through the dancer's eyes, heart, and skin; expository pieces provide background with lively accounts of tango's history and evolution, of personal experiences learning to tango, and of the pleasures and challenges of adding tango to our own lives. Alternating fiction and non-fiction the way we have is the only way to capture the multiple voices of tango. Ours is not a "how-to" manual or an historical treatise, but a tour of the erotic steam of crowded late night dance floors as well as the frightening challenges to body and heart. The Temptation to Tango: Journeys of Intimacy and Desire is divided into four parts: "The Lure", "The Reality", "The Challenge" and "The Reward". First, we explore tango's romantic allure, mysterious origins, and exotic dark side. The first short story is about a Catholic priest whose hidden life of tango is exposed. Next, we focus on why tango is so hard to learn; the stresses on the body and inner-world of emotion. We investigate the cultural issues around dominance and submission. Six more short stories tell tales of couples and singles who take-on the tango with very different goals and results. Even after mastery of the dance, challenges abound: the tango scene and how to fit into it, the intimacy factor and how far to take it, and the impact on established relationships. What one can get from persevering along the arduous tango trail is sensual and emotional fulfillment, rewards frequently lacking in our society.

Book excerpt: Click here to listen to Julia Ericksen's interview about Dance with Me on Philadelphia NPR's "Radio Times" Rumba music starts and a floor full of dancers alternate clinging to one another and turning away. Rumba is an erotic dance, and the mood is hot and heavy; the women bend and hyperextend their legs as they twist and turn around their partners. Amateur and professional ballroom dancers alike compete in a highly gendered display of intimacy, romance and sexual passion. In Dance With Me, Julia Ericksen, a competitive ballroom dancer herself, takes the reader onto the competition floor and into the lights and the glamour of a world of tanned bodies and glittering attire, exploring the allure of this hyper-competitive, difficult, and often expensive activity. In a vivid ethnography accompanied by beautiful photographs of all levels of dancers, from the world’s top competitors to social dancers, Ericksen examines the ways emotional labor is used to create intimacy between professional partners and between professionals and their students, illustrating how dancers purchase intimacy. She shows that, while at first glance, ballroom presents a highly gendered face with men leading and women following, dancing also transgresses gender.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neapolitan Postcards gathers a diverse group of international scholars to investigate unexplored transnational aspects of the intimate yet globally popular canzone napoletana. Performed and beloved worldwide in almost every language, the style had hits such as “Funiculì funiculà” (1880) and “’O sole mio” (1898) which sold millions of copies. These hits fueled the tradition’s spread across the world over the course of the twentieth century with the eventual popularity of covers by singers and musicians of all music genres and styles, from popular music to opera and jazz. This book is the first scholarly work that considers the specific complexities of the international Neapolitan Song scenes through case studies from Argentina, England, Greece, and the United States, employing analyses of compositions, iconographical sources, international films, mechanical musical instruments, performances, and recordings devoted to the canzone napoletana.

Book Evidence and Agency

Download or read book Evidence and Agency written by Berislav Marušić and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evidence and Agency is concerned with the question of how, as agents, we should take evidence into account when thinking about our future actions. Suppose you are promising or resolving to do something that you have evidence is difficult for you to do. For example, suppose you are promising to be faithful for the rest of your life, or you are resolving to quit smoking. Should you believe that you will follow through, or should you believe that there is a good chance that you won't? If you believe the former, you seem to be irrational since you believe against the evidence. Yet if you believe the latter, you seem to be insincere since you can't sincerely say that you will follow through. Hence, it seems, your promise or resolution must be improper. Nonetheless, we make such promises and resolutions all the time. Indeed, as the examples illustrate, such promises and resolutions are very important to us. The challenge is to explain this apparent inconsistency in our practice of promising and resolving. To meet this challenge, Berislav Marusic; considers a number of possible responses, including an appeal to 'trying', an appeal to non-cognitivism about practical reason, an appeal to 'practical knowledge', and an appeal to evidential constraints on practical reasoning. He rejects all these and defends a solution inspired by the Kantian tradition and by Sartre in particular: as agents, we have a distinct view of what we will do. If something is up to us, we can decide what to do, rather than predict what we will do. But the reasons in light of which a decision is rational are not the same as the reasons in light of which a prediction is rational. That is why, provided it is important to us to do something we can rationally believe that we will do it, even if our belief goes against the evidence.

Book Tango And The Political Economy Of Passion

Download or read book Tango And The Political Economy Of Passion written by Marta Savigliano and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is tango? Dance, music, and lyrics of course, but also a philosophy, a strategy, a commodity, even a disease. This book explores the politics of tango, tracing tango's travels from the brothels of Buenos Aires to the cabarets of Paris and the shako dansu clubs of Tokyo. The author is an Argentinean political theorist and a dance professor at the University of California at Riverside. She uses her ?tango tongue? to tell interwoven tales of sexuality, gender, race, class, and national identity. Along the way she unravels relations between machismo and colonialism, postmodernism and patriarchy, exoticism and commodification. In the end she arrives at a discourse on decolonization as intellectual ?unlearning.?Marta Savigliano's voice is highly personal and political. Her account is at once about the exoticization of tango and about her own fate as a Third World woman intellectual. A few sentences from the preface are indicative: ?Tango is my womb and my tongue, a trench where I can shelter and resist the colonial invitations to '`'universalism,'? a stubborn fatalist mood when technocrats and theorists offer optimistic and seriously revised versions of '`'alternatives' for the Third World, an opportunistic metaphor to talk about myself and my stories as a success' of the civilization-development-colonization of Am ca Latina, and a strategy to figure out through the history of the tango a hooked-up story of people like myself. Tango is my changing, resourceful source of identity. And because I am where I am?outside?tango hurts and comforts me: '`'Tango is a sad thought that can be danced.'?Savigliano employs the tools of ethnography, history, body-movement analysis, and political economy. Well illustrated with drawings and photos dating back to the 1880s, this book is highly readable, entertaining, and provocative. It is sure to be recognized as an important contribution in the fields of cultural studies, performance studies, decolonization, and women-of-color feminism.

Book excerpt: This book is inspired by material culture studies. Essays center on the idea that matter and materiality are integral dimensions of social life. The diversity of their subjects is reflected in the various approaches that bring together archeology, cultural heritage, artifacts, commodities, the human body, and the study of space. United by a common interest in various social matter(s), and coming from diverse schools of thought and academic traditions, the book is by no means an effort to present a clear, cohesive, collective manifesto. On the contrary, there might be differences in the way each of the contributors discusses materiality, matter, thingness, things, and artifacts. There are varied understandings of the terms and there are references to different sources and schools of thought. (Series: Ethnologie: Forschung und Wissenschaft - Vol. 23)

Download or read book Piano Lesson written by Billy Georgette and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-03-25 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being sent for piano lessons was probably the single worst thing that could have happened in my young life. But thanks to an exceptional lady and piano teacher named Florence Powers, I wound up unexpectedly becoming a professional piano player. Here are some curious things about the piano that I picked up along the way... Playing the piano has got to be one of life’s greatest treasures. In my estimation, there are few other activities that can even begin to compare with the ability to play this amazing instrument. As you can probably guess, I have the highest regard for those individuals who have mastered the art of playing the piano. Some performers have taken the art to a very high level, often out of the reach of most players. But my aim here is to present a simple accessible approach on learning how to listen to, or how to approach playing the piano for one’s own pleasure... first and foremost. This self-centered idea doesn’t necessarily imply being selfish, but it probably does require a slight adjustment to one’s priorities. However, if you can get around this inconvenience, the possibilities are sitting right there in front of you... and all you have to do is reach out and take. My aim here is to demystify the piano for both listeners or those who wish to learn how to get started in learning how play this amazing instrument. In any event, I feel that pleasure can be derived by having a wider understanding as just what the piano actually is. And while a book such as this one may be helpful to those who wish to learn to play the piano, there is no substitute for a live teacher. However, it’s extremely important to find a teacher that can fulfill one’s personal musical taste and ambition. There is much involved if a student wishes to become a proficient music reader, thus having a good teacher is essential to success in this area. Take your time in finding the right one... and good luck! However, before looking at the piano, it’s also important to establish what kind of music one is interested in, whether for listening or performing. For purposes of this book, I have arbitrarily broken it down into four major forms: Classical, Standards, Popular and Jazz. Classical leads the list as the music that has been around longer, much longer than the other two forms of music. It represents the foundation of all of today’s music. Much of it is seriously challenging to play, and requires years of dedicated practice. At the concert level, Olympic style discipline prevails, as the techniques of performance far surpasses the scope of this book. Be that as it may, classical music has an abundance of priceless melodiesthat can be played in a simplified manner while still retaining their pure magic for listeners. (and pianists ) Music operates on principles that were founded in the past 600 years, they carry with them an enormous amount of human cultural genius, including the invention of equal temperament.

Book excerpt: “A smart and eminently readable examination of the life and career of one of the twentieth century’s most influential movie critics.”—Los Angeles Times “Engrossing and thoroughly researched.”—Entertainment Weekly • A New York Times Book Review Notable Book of 2011 • The first major biography of the most influential, powerful, and controversial film critic of the twentieth century Pauline Kael was, in the words of Entertainment Weekly's movie reviewer Owen Gleiberman, "the Elvis or Beatles of film criticism." During her tenure at The New Yorker from 1968 to 1991, she was the most widely read and, often enough, the most provocative critic in America. In this first full-length biography of the legend who changed the face of film criticism, acclaimed author Brian Kellow (author of Can I Go Now?: The Life of Sue Mengers, Hollywood's First Superagent) gives readers a richly detailed view of Kael's remarkable life—from her youth in rural California to her early struggles to establish her writing career to her peak years at The New Yorker.

Book excerpt: Following the mass arrival of European immigrants to Argentina in the early years of the twentieth century new forms of entertainment emerged including tango, films, radio and theater. While these forms of culture promoted ethnic integration they also produced a new kind of polarization that helped Juan Peron to build the mass movement that propelled him to power.
