Note A. on sanctification. In the Old Testament, to sanctify had two mean ings, --consecration and purification. First, To be set apart, or consecrated as the property of God, and therefore considered holy. examples. In Genesis ii. 2, the Lord blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it, because in it he had rested, --that is, "He consecrated it as a day to be kept holy to Him." In Exodus xiii. 1, God said, "Sanctify to me all the first born,"--that is, Set them apart as my property. In Jeremiah i. 5, the Lord said to the prophet, I sanctified thee before thou wert born, --that is, He set him apart as consecrated to His service. In Leviticus x. 3, God says, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, --that is, "I will be treated as holy." In Deuteronomy xxxii. 51, God complains against Moses and Aaron, that they sanctified Him not amidst the children of Israel. Secondly, The other meaning of "to be sanctified" is to be purified, or made holy by the removing of defilement. This was done amongst the Israelites by outward ceremonies. examples. In Exod. xix. 10, the Lord said unto Moses, " Go unto the people and sanctify them." The people had already been chosen by God to be His own peculiar people, and as such, they had been consecrated to his service; but when called to appear in His more immediate presence, there is a purifying process of three days required. In Leviticus xx. 7, the Lord says, "Sanctify yourselves and be ye holy, and ye shall keep my statutes, and do them; I am the Lord which sanctify you." Here we have something more than the mere consecration of the people, for the Lord had been previously warning them against several gross sins. and now he not only commands them to become holy, but also proclaims Himself as...
Download or read book The Spirit of Christ written by Andrew Murray and published by Whitaker House. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Murray's writings were a cherished and vital part of his ministry in Africa. In this classic work, Murray stresses the importance of one truth: the Holy Spirit must be known by every believer as an indwelling life of spiritual power. For Murray, this indwelling is to be accepted and treasured until it becomes part of the consciousness of the believer. As the Holy Spirit possesses us, all of our lives, even the least things, must be surrendered to His leading. If God's people can learn to wait on the Holy Spirit for divine leading and working, placing ourselves entirely at His disposal, there will be manifestations of the Spirit's power in the church such as the world has never known. In The Spirit of Christ, Murray covers all aspects of the Holy Spirit, in the hope that God's glory will begin to work through His church in powerful ways that would be a witness for all the world. "In my observation of the lives of believers, I have been very deeply impressed with one thought: that our prayer for the mighty working of the Holy Spirit through us and around us can only be powerfully answered as His indwelling in every believer is more clearly acknowledged and lived out." —Andrew Murray

Download or read book Savior of the World written by J. Preston Eby and published by . This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AMONG all the questions that men have asked, there is one that is of supreme interest and importance. Why are we here? What is our destiny? What lies beyond the grave for the Christian, for the unbeliever? For old, for young? For our fellow citizens, and for the teeming masses in far-away lands serving strange gods? Is there a God who comforts? Is there a God who can assuage the pain of life. Is there really a Christ? Does He live? Is there One who can smooth the wrinkled brow and soften the hard heart? Is there some place, some heaven, some distant Eden or future world where we shall be joined again with our loved ones? God has a plan indeed, God has a wonderful plan for this world! It is a plan of which the architectural drawings were made in eternity. It encompasses the minutest detail of all of creation. I assure you that when time has run its course, and the veil is dropped upon the final scene, we shall discover that that plan has been worked out to its very tiniest detail, just as God had planned it in eternity - that His will has been done!

Download or read book Stop Asking Jesus Into Your Heart written by J.D. Greear and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “If there were a Guinness Book of World Records entry for ‘amount of times having prayed the sinner’s prayer,’ I’m pretty sure I’d be a top contender,” says pastor and author J. D. Greear. He struggled for many years to gain an assurance of salvation and eventually learned he was not alone. “Lack of assurance” is epidemic among evangelical Christians. In Stop Asking Jesus Into Your Heart, J. D. shows that faulty ways of present- ing the gospel are a leading source of the confusion. Our presentations may not be heretical, but they are sometimes misleading. The idea of “asking Jesus into your heart” or “giving your life to Jesus” often gives false assurance to those who are not saved—and keeps those who genuinely are saved from fully embracing that reality. Greear unpacks the doctrine of assurance, showing that salvation is a posture we take to the promise of God in Christ, a posture that begins at a certain point and is maintained for the rest of our lives. He also answers the tough questions about assurance: What exactly is faith? What is repentance? Why are there so many warnings that seem to imply we can lose our salvation? Such issues are handled with respect to the theological rigors they require, but Greear never loses his pastoral sensitivity or a communication technique that makes this message teachable to a wide audience from teens to adults.
Download or read book The Doctrinal Treatises written by St. Augustine of Hippo and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most weighty of the doctrinal treatises is that on the Holy Trinity. The Latin original (De Trinitate contra Arianos libri quindecim), is contained in the 8th volume of the Benedictine edition. It is the most elaborate, and probably also the ablest and profoundest patristic discussion of this central doctrine of the Christian religion, unless we except the Orations against the Arians, by Athanasius, "the Father of Orthodoxy," who devoted his life to the defense of the Divinity of Christ. Augustine, owing to his defective knowledge of Greek, wrote his work independently of the previous treatises of the Eastern Church on that subject. He bestowed more time and care upon it than on any other book, except the City of God. Besides this treatise the following works are included: The Enchiridion, or On Faith, Hope and Love, On the Catechising of the Uninstructed, Treatise on Faith and the Creed, Concerning Faith of Things not Seen, On the Profit of Believing On the Creed.
