Book excerpt: Beginning in the 1950s, "Euro Horror" movies materialized in astonishing numbers from Italy, Spain, and France and popped up in the US at rural drive-ins and urban grindhouse theaters such as those that once dotted New York's Times Square. Gorier, sexier, and stranger than most American horror films of the time, they were embraced by hardcore fans and denounced by critics as the worst kind of cinematic trash. In this volume, Olney explores some of the most popular genres of Euro Horror cinema—including giallo films, named for the yellow covers of Italian pulp fiction, the S&M horror film, and cannibal and zombie films—and develops a theory that explains their renewed appeal to audiences today.

Book Rethinking Abortion

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark Graber
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 1999-03-23
  • ISBN : 1400821975
  • Pages : 255 pages

Download or read book Rethinking Abortion written by Mark Graber and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1999-03-23 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Graber looks at the history of abortion law in action to argue that the only defensible, constitutional approach to the issue is to afford all women equal choice--abortion should remain legal or bans should be strictly enforced. Steering away from metaphysical critiques of privacy, Graber compares the philosophical, constitutional, and democratic merits of the two systems of abortion regulation witnessed in the twentieth century: pre-Roe v. Wade statutory prohibitions on abortion and Roe's ban on significant state interference with the market for safe abortion services. He demonstrates that before Roe, pro-life measures were selectively and erratically administered, thereby subverting our constitutional commitment to equal justice. Claiming that these measures would be similarly administered if reinstated, the author seeks to increase support for keeping abortion legal, even among those who have reservations about its morality. Abortion should remain legal, Graber argues, because statutory bans on abortion have a history of being enforced in ways that intentionally discriminate against poor persons and persons of color. In the years before Roe, the same law enforcement officials who routinely ignored and sometimes assisted those physicians seeking to terminate pregnancies for their private patients too often prevented competent abortionists from offering the same services to the general public. This double standard violated the fundamental human and constitutional right of equal justice under law, a right that remains a major concern of the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Book Video Scrambling Descrambling

Download or read book Video Scrambling Descrambling written by Rudolf F. Graf and published by Newnes. This book was released on 1998 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Video Scrambling and Descrambling for Satellite & Cable TV provides the "how and why" of encoding and decoding video signals. Most of the currently used methods are discussed, with the necessary technical background. Since digital scrambling methods will undoubtedly supplant analog methods, information on analog/digital conversion, phase-locked loops, digital techniques, and IC data sheets are included. In this new edition the authors incorporate the many developments in this field since 1986. They elaborate the basic information on scrambling given in the first edition, and discuss current scrambling systems such as Tri-mode, SSAVI, and Videocipher II. Looking back at the "gloom and doom" predictions made in the 80s, they discuss which have proven correct, which have yet to be realized, and which have been wrong. Their discussion of basic circuitry now includes some new IC devices, and the section on political, legal and consumer aspects of scrambling has been completely updated. New digitization techniques and construction data, decoder circuitry, audio scrambling techniques, manufacturers' data sheets, US Patents, and current developments such as digital audio are also covered in this updated version. Complete revision of a best-seller Explains the theory and operation of encoding/decoding systems Scrambling & descrambling circuits

Book Television Entertainment

Download or read book Television Entertainment written by Jonathan Gray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-06-02 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Television entertainment rules supreme, one of the world’s most important disseminators of information, ideas, and amusement. More than a parade of little figures in a box, it is deeply embedded in everyday life, in how we think, what we think and care about, and who we think and care about it with. But is television entertainment art? Why do so many love it and so many hate or fear it? Does it offer a window to the world, or images of a fake world? How is it political and how does it address us as citizens? What powers does it hold, and what powers do we have over it? Or, for that matter, what is television these days, in an era of rapidly developing technologies, media platforms, and globalization? Written especially for students, Television Entertainment addresses these and other key questions that we regularly ask, or should ask. Jonathan Gray offers a lively and dynamic, thematically based overview with examples from recent and current television, including Lost, reality television, The Sopranos, The Simpsons, political satire, Grey’s Anatomy, The West Wing, soaps, and 24.
