Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Telephone, the Microphone and the Phonograph: Authorized Translation With Additions and Corrections by the Author, With 70 Illustrations on Woods Strictly speaking, the telephone is merely an instrument adapted for the transmission of sound to a distance, and this idea of transmitting sound is as old as the world itself. The Greeks made use of means which might effect it, and there is no doubt that these means were sometimes used for the pagan oracles. But such transmission of sound was within somewhat narrow limits, and certainly did not exceed those of a speaking-tube. Mr. Preece considers that the earliest document in which this transmission of sound to a distance is distinctly formulated dates from 1667: he refers to a paper by one Robert Hooke, who writes to this effect: "It is not impossible to hear a whisper at a furlong's distance, it having been already done; and perhaps the nature of the thing would not make it more impossible, though that furlong should be ten times multiply d.And though some famous authors have affirm'd it impossible to hear through the thinnest plate of Muscovy glass; yet I know a way by which 'tis easie enough to hear one speak through a wall a yard thick. Book The Oxford Handbook of Sound and Imagination

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Sound and Imagination written by Mark Grimshaw-Aagaard and published by Oxford Handbooks. This book was released on 2019 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether social, cultural, or individual, the act of imagination always derives from a pre-existing context. For example, we can conjure an alien's scream from previously heard wildlife recordings or mentally rehearse a piece of music while waiting for a train. This process is no less true forthe role of imagination in sonic events and artifacts. Many existing works on sonic imagination tend to discuss musical imagination through terms like compositional creativity or performance technique. In this two-volume Handbook, contributors address this tendency head-on, correcting the currentbias towards visual imagination to instead highlight the many forms of sonic and musical imagination. Topics covered include auditory imagery and the neurology of sonic imagination; aural hallucination and illusion; use of metaphor in the recording studio; the projection of acoustic imagination inarchitectural design; and the design of sound artifacts for cinema and computer games.

Book Recording History

Download or read book Recording History written by Peter Martland and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Recording History, Peter Martland uses a range of archival sources to trace the genesis and early development of the British record industry from1888 to 1931. A work of economic and cultural history that draws on a vast range of quantitative data, it surveys the commercial and business activities of the British record industry like no other work of recording history has before. Martland's study charts the successes and failures of this industry and its impact on domestic entertainment. Showcasing its many colorful pioneers from both sides of the Atlantic, Recording History is first and foremost an account of The Gramophone Company Ltd, a precursor to today's recording giant EMI, and then the most important British record company active from the late 19th century until the end of the second decade of the twentieth century. Martland's history spans the years from the original inventors through industrial and market formation and final take-off--including the riveting battle in recording formats. Special attention is given to the impact of the First World War and the that followed in its wake. Scholars of recording history will find in Martland's study the story of the development of the recording studio, of the artists who made the first records (from which some like Italian opera tenor Enrico Caruso earned a fortune), and the change records wrought in the relationship between performer and audience, transforming the reception and appreciation of musical culture. Filling a much-needed gap in scholarship, Recording History documents the beginnings of the end of the contemporary international record industry.
