Book The Techniques of Holographic Particle Sizing

Download or read book The Techniques of Holographic Particle Sizing written by Robert L. Kurtz and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depending on the mechanism of particle production, the resultant particle size and velocity distribution may range over several orders of magnitude. In general, if particle size information is desired from a given type generator, one must resort to some form of experimental determination of the distribution. If the source of particle production is a dynamic one involving a reasonable volume, holography provides a tailor-made particle size and velocity distribution detector. This is evidenced by the fact that holography allows the entire volume to be recorded on one exposure without any interference with the volume of interest. Herein lies a very important characteristic of the holographic particle detection technique: It provides a holographic nondestructive testing technique in the fullest sense of the definition of nondestructive testing. This report provides a description of three different systems useful in this technique and includes the experimental results from one of the holographic systems which was used to detect particle size and velocity distribution from the Skylab waste tank.

Book Particle Size Measurement by In Line Holography

Download or read book Particle Size Measurement by In Line Holography written by T. W. Chubb and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report is concerned with particle sizing by means of holography which provides a method of reproducing images of small particles dispersed in a volume without the severe difficulty of the limited depth of field of conventional photography and without the disturbance to the sample of collection methods. The size and position of particles may be determined by this method and by extension to double exposure techniques the velocity may also be found. In-line Fraunhofer systems are shown to be especially suitable for particle diameters in the 5 to 500 micron range, provided the maximum recording distance (particle to hologram) does not exceed certain limits set by the smallest particles. Book DIGITAL IN LINE HOLOGRAM ENHANCEMENT USING FILTERING AND PADDING FOR PARTICLE CHARACTERIZATION

Download or read book DIGITAL IN LINE HOLOGRAM ENHANCEMENT USING FILTERING AND PADDING FOR PARTICLE CHARACTERIZATION written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract : We studied the effect of image enhancement techniques on digital holograms based on an in-line holographic system for air-borne cloud droplet measurements. A super-Gaussian filter is applied to pre-process the padded raw hologram prior to the reconstruction. The size distribution of pre-processed hologram with padding and filtering depicts a shift to the larger diameter of cloud particles due to the dilation of detected particle images. The dilated particles reside within the instrument's detectable size range. Two different padding methods: (1) zero padding and (2) mean padding show almost identical consequence for number concentration and particle size dilation. However, the pre-processed hologram with padding alone results in minimal improvement.

Book Holographic Particle Sizing in Solid Fuel Ramjets

Download or read book Holographic Particle Sizing in Solid Fuel Ramjets written by Robert Paul Paty and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted to determine the suitability of a holographic technique as a diagnostic tool for metallized fuel combustion in a two-dimensional solid fuel ramjet. The highly metallized fuels were burned under conditions similar to actual flight conditions. If found suitable, the objective was to produce a three-dimensional image of a volume in the boundary layer above the fuel surface, and to determine the particle size distribution in that volume. This distribution could be used to validate current models which must assume particle size, and could lead to better estimates of fuel regression rates and combustion efficiencies. Once the conditions for sustained combustion were determined, the technique was successfully demonstrated, even in the presence of large amounts of smoke. Holograms were obtained at two different chamber pressures for each of the fuels. However, current resolution limits of the technique are not sufficient to reveal the vast majority of the particles in the combustor. Keywords: Solid fuel ramjet, Boron combustion, Metallized fuels, Ramjet, Holography. (kt).

Book The Microphysics of Ice Clouds

Download or read book The Microphysics of Ice Clouds written by Rosemary M. Dyer and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published results of observations of crystal habits, particle sizes and numbers of ice particles in clouds are summarized and discussed. There are systematic variations with cloud type, and in some instances, with cloud age and location within a cloud system. However, the body of data available is insufficient to formulate a climatology of ice cloud microphysics. The several measurement techniques in current use are evaluated, as are some of the techniques now under consideration for future use. The particle enhancement observed on some occasions is discussed, and the various theories accounting for it presented. Finally, recommendations are made concerning future field programs and theoretical studies required before accurate predictions of the ice cloud microphysical environment can be made. (Author).

Book excerpt: This fully updated second edition of Introduction to Holography provides a theoretical background in optics and holography with a comprehensive survey of practical applications. It is intended for the non-specialist with an interest in using holographic methods in research and engineering. The text assumes some knowledge of electromagnetism, although this is not essential for an understanding of optics, which is covered in the first two chapters. A descriptive approach to the history and principles of holography is followed by a chapter on volume holography. Essential practical requirements for successful holographic recording are explained in detail. Recording materials are considered with detailed discussions of those in common use. Properties peculiar to holographically reconstructed images are emphasised as well as applications for which holography is particularly suitable. Mathematical tools are introduced as and when required throughout the text with important results derived in detail. In this new edition, topics such as photopolymers, dynamic holographic displays, holographic optical elements, sensors, and digital holography are covered in greater depth. New topics have been added, including UV and infrared holography, holographic authentication and encryption, as well as particle beam, X-ray, and acoustic holography. Numerical problems are provided at the end of each chapter. This book is suitable for undergraduate courses and will be an important resource for those teaching optics and holography. It provides scientists and engineers with knowledge of a wide range of holographic applications in research and industry, as well as an understanding of holography’s potential for future use.
