Book James Jones and the Handy Writers Colony

Download or read book James Jones and the Handy Writers Colony written by George Hendrick and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story of James Jones and the Handy Colony is a popular account of one of the most unusual writing colonies ever established in the United States. Between his Army enlistment in 1939 and the wound that sent him to a Memphis hospital in 1943, James Jones suffered the loss of both his mother and his father, a victim of suicide. Psychologically precarious, Jones drank heavily, often brawling in bars. Concerned about his erratic behavior, his aunt took Jones to meet Lowney Handy, who took virtual control of his life, securing his discharge from the army and, with her husband Harry, inviting him into their home. Lowney became Jones's writing teacher--and his lover. An aspiring but unpublished writer when she began the Handy Writers' Colony in Marshall, Illinois, Lowney Handy developed a reputation as an inspirational teacher of writing. Her husband, an oil refinery executive from nearby Robinson, supported her in this endeavor, which proved quite successful. The Handy colony achieved national attention through the success of Jones, its most celebrated member and the author of From Here to Eternity and Some Came Running.

Book The Technique of the Novel

Download or read book The Technique of the Novel written by Charles Francis Horne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Technique of the Novel: The Elements of the Art, Their Evolution and Present Use The aim of this book is to make clear the principles that underlie the most popular form of literature, the novel. With this end in view these pages trace historically and by the aid of constant illustration the development of the art of novel writing. Considering the present frequently lamented "tyranny of the novel," it is surprising that the technique of this influential form of art has not been more closely studied. Its principles are often loosely discussed, and histories of the novel or critiques on the work of individuals are abundant; but nowhere has the complete body of accepted law been gathered and formulated for common use. The necessity for some such undertaking is obvious if the critical study of fiction is to advance scientifically. Hence I have endeavored here to analyze the novel, to separate its parts, and then, going back to the earliest fiction, to see how each one of these essential elements has been employed and understood through all the ages. Thus the book, without being history, has something of history's cultural value in its chronological advance. One important field which I have kept in view is that of collegiate study. Within the last twenty years most of our colleges and universities have begun to give the novel serious consideration. The teaching of literature no longer means solely the discussing of poetry and of the essay. The novel is acknowledged as a potent literary form. Yet we have no completed text-book with which to approach it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Washington

Download or read book Washington written by Ron Chernow and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2010-12-02 with total page 835 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The celebrated Ron Chernow provides a richly nuanced portrait of the father of America. With a breadth and depth matched by no other one-volume life, he carries the reader through Washington's troubled boyhood, his precocious feats in the French and Indian Wars, his creation of Mount Vernon, his heroic exploits with the Continental Army, his presiding over the Constitutional Convention and his magnificent performance as America's first president. Despite the reverence his name inspires Washington remains a waxwork to many readers, worthy but dull, a laconic man of remarkable self-control. But in this groundbreaking work Chernow revises forever the uninspiring stereotype. He portrays Washington as a strapping, celebrated horseman, elegant dancer and tireless hunter, who guarded his emotional life with intriguing ferocity. Not only did Washington gather around himself the foremost figures of the age, including James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson, he orchestrated their actions to help realise his vision for the new federal government, define the separation of powers, and establish the office of the presidency. Ron Chernow takes us on a page-turning journey through all the formative events of America's founding. This is a magisterial work from one of America's foremost writers and historians.
