Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Spelling The purpose of this book is to bring together from all sources the more reliable and pertinent facts in the teaching of spelling, and to present them in their relation to the practical problems which the teacher has to face every day in the classroom. The book is an outgrowth of a thesis on "The Experimental Studies of Spelling," which embodied an exhaustive study of some ninety investigations. In the preparation of the book, this material was supplemented by such information as could be gathered from the general literature of the subject, including books and articles on methods of teaching and on the psychology of learning, and the better spelling texts of the day. A third source of material was the author's three years' experience as an elementary school principal and supervisor in testing, evaluating, and applying in actual classroom work the conclusions of the preceding studies. The author gratefully acknowledges his indebtedness to the many investigators and teachers whose fruitful labors have made this book possible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Spelling Book Improved methods in the teaching of spelling are replacing old ones as rapidly as the modern principle of teaching form through content is gaining recognition in schoolroom practice. The principles underlying the teaching of spelling are precisely those underlying the enriching and shortening of the entire course of study, by which the child takes a short cut to knowl edge through an appeal to his interest and the power gained through the cultivation of his mind. So long as we hammer at the child's brain as though it were so much cold steel in the belief that if we hammer hard enough and long enough some impression must be made, so long will the teaching of spelling meet with a greater or less degree of failure. It is a common fallacy for teachers to believe that if they teach the letters of a word, time will fill in the empty form with the proper content. Two things are forgotten in this process: first, that in the human mind nothing dwells in isolation and that the child puts some content into every form he learns a wrong one if he is not supplied with the right one and second, that the child, realizing that his teacher is indifferent to his knowing the content of the word, grows both mentally and morally careless. Book Teacher s Manual of Spelling Classic Reprint

Download or read book Teacher s Manual of Spelling Classic Reprint written by Grace M. Fernald and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teacher's Manual of Spelling The complaint is very common today that the present age is one of poor spellers. Business men particularly are prone to lament the fact that our present system of education does not turn out children as skilled in the intricacies of English spelling as were those of the good old days. These same business men further stipulate that the particular point of defect in our present system is lack of thoroughness and drill. The truth is that many children spell as well as children have ever spelled and acquire their mastery of words in a much shorter time and with much less effort than would have been possible under the old formal system of education. Actual tests of spelling ability show that the average skill in large groups is about the same today as that of similar groups twenty-five years ago. It is true that every class in almost every school has a certain percentage of disgracefully poor spellers, and that these children drag through the seventh and eighth grades and often through high school without ever really learning to spell. As a matter of fact there has never been a time in our educational history when this has not been more or less true. If our modern psychology has the value we claim for it, it should have given us methods by which all children of normal mentality could be taught to spell. The reasons why we still have so many spelling failures seem to be: First, that certain psychological fallacies have crept into our theory of teaching spelling, and, second, that the erroneous supposition has been made that modern methods eliminate the need for drill. This book is not theoretical; it is the result of five years experimental work with the problem. Over four hundred very poor spellers have been carefully examined and finally taught to spell. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Every-Day Speller: Third Book, Grades Five and Six These Every-day Spelling books have been prepared in view of the results of extensive experience with the teaching of spelling, and also of the conclusions of recent investigations respecting (1) the words which should be taught in the ele mentary school because they are likely to be used by the majority of people in every-day life; (2) the ways in which a pupil learns to spell most readily and effectively; and (3) the crucial parts of difficult words to which the learner needs to give particular attention. At the close of the Second, Third and Fourth Books there is given a detailed presentation of all the principles and methods upon which the books are based, and the teacher is referred to this statement for information re garding the grounds upon which words have been chosen for the different grades, and the various methods of teaching them. It will be enough to say here that the authors have endeavored to make spelling books which are closely adapted to the practi cal needs of pupils and teachers in elementary schools. Every word included in these books has been carefully examined with respect alike to the probability of its being of practical value to pupils, and the methods of presenting -it so that it can be read ily and accurately used when once learned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Spelling: A Critical Study of Recent Tendencies in Method The whole effort of the monograph is to study a live Situation, for institutional customs have an active molding power. Lay a wide reform upon the school, and the result will always be somewhat disappointing to the reformer. The tradition upon which reform has been laid is not static; it has force and modifies every new idea. There are lines of most and least resistance in every situation, and these must be taken into account in administering any progressive policy. For this reason, the historical method is used throughout. Nothing illuminates the present so much as an understanding of immediately pre ceding situations. Any basic interpretation of to-day's practices is dependent upon a compre hension of yesterday's. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It has seemed best to hold the attention of teachers and pupils to the main object of this spelling book, viz., to teach spelling. Every language lesson, in fact, should be a lesson in spelling as well as in the expression of thought. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book New Champion Spelling Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book New Champion Spelling Book Classic Reprint written by Warren E. Hicks and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Champion Spelling Book The New Champion Spelling Book preserves the general plan and organization of the original Champion Spelling Book, which has met the enthusiastic approval of teachers, principals, and superintendents throughout the country. Since its publication, however, many new words have come into use, and many investigations have been made and books published on the subject of spelling vocabularies by such specialists as Ayres, Cook and O'Shea, Pryor, and Suzzallo. The Champion Spelling Book has therefore been made over so far as necessary to incorporate the additional words that need to be taught, and to omit a corresponding number of words that are less needed. In resetting the book for this purpose, the opportunity has been taken to make various other changes, especially in the grading of words and in the grading and arrangement of the supplementary exercises. The length of the book has been increased by a few pages in order to incorporate a considerably larger number of dictation exercises. The course, as before, includes six sections, each designed for a years work. The intensive teaching of two new words daily and the employment of spelling contests, making drill and review effective, are the prominent features in the new book as in the old, as explained in the following pages. It was by these methods that Cleveland boys and girls were prepared to win their famous victory in the National Education Association spelling contest; hence the name of this book. Book The Bailey Manly Spelling Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Bailey Manly Spelling Book Classic Reprint written by Eliza R. Bailey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-22 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bailey-Manly Spelling Book Wm present in this book a plan for the teaching of spelling which has been in successful use for several years. Its main features were determined some ten years ago on the basis of long experience in teaching, and tne details have been subjected to the test of actual use ever since. The success of the plan in the school in which it was first tried and in which the details were worked out has led to the use of it in manuscript form in other schools, and it has been equally successful in them. The vocabulary has been chosen and graded with the utmost care. A large number of school books and written exercises were examined, and from them were selected the best 250 words for the first year, the best 300 for the second, and so on. The words were carefully catalogued and checked as used, so that the time of the pupil should not be wasted in useless repetition, and yet that certain especially refractory or elusive words should be repeated again and again until their mastery was assured. Continued tests of these lists, both as to the words which they should contain and the proper method and order of presenting them to the child, have given results in which we feel the highest confidence. The care with which the selection and grading of material 'has been carried out will, we feel, become increasingly evident to any teacher using the book. Book Modern Methods of Teaching

Download or read book Modern Methods of Teaching written by Conrad E. Patzer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Methods of Teaching: Language, Reading, Spelling The methods of teaching Language, Reading and Spell ing as presented in this volume are the result of many years of experience of the author both as a class teacher and as a supervisor. They have in the main been subjected to the crucial test of the schoolroom by the teachers of the ele mentary school connected with the Milwaukee State Normal School. The author desires to acknowledge his obligations to the principal and the teachers of this school and to the teacher of Language Arts in the Normal School, for valu able suggestions which have been embodied in the book. In the presentation of the methods no attempt at elaborateness is made. Simplicity, directness and naturalness have been the keynotes the author has had in mind. It was thought best to reduce the theoretical discussion of method to as brief a compass as possible, in order to secure the necessary space for illustrative exercises by means of which principles of teaching and special methods of procedure could be exemplified in a practical way. Book Methods of Instruction

Download or read book Methods of Instruction written by William A. Campbell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods of Instruction: How to Teach Reading, Pronunciation, and Spelling This little book does not claim to present a complete Manual of Instruction in Reading. It purposely avoids the discussion of many questions that arise in the Science of Elocution. The chief business of the teachers in Grammar and Primary Schools should be to develop easy, natural, and intelligent expression. The time must be spent almost exclusively with the art of reading; we must deal with the how to read, and not the why; we must not depend upon rules, but upon exercises. Therefore, this book presents only model exercises which, in kind, may be multiplied at the discretion of the teacher. It also contains many hints and suggestions bearing upon the teaching of reading, pronunciation, and spelling. A teacher who has to depend largely upon his own resources and methods, occasionally feels the need of a sympathizing and a helping friend. Books of reference and books on teaching are the true friends of earnest teachers. They help the teacher by warning him of dangerous methods and by giving the successful experiences of others. It is hoped that the remarks upon methods, the model exercises, the danger signals, and the suggestions may be found practical and useful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Graded Speller: Arranged in Six Steps The pupil should first get the idea which the word represents, then associate the idea with the word, and lastly, write the word. This requires the most careful and critical examination of the spelling lesson on the part-oi the teacher, without which, it is not possible to attain the highest success in teaching children to spell. Book The Jones Spelling Book Vol 1

Download or read book The Jones Spelling Book Vol 1 written by W. Franklin Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jones Spelling Book, Vol. 1: Grades Two, Three and Four If there is any subject in the common school whose teaching has been a disappointment to teachers themselves, that subject is spelling. In spite of new and improved methods of teaching spelling, in spite of more time spent upon spelling, and in spite of efforts to reform English spelling, students throughout the eight grades of our public schools continue to disappoint us in their spelling. Then, too, the high school graduate seems as likely as ever to mar his thesis by frequent misspelling; the letters of business men are far from satisfactory in spelling; and, finally, the college graduate continues to show us that he is by no means a master of spelling. This is a formidable array of evidence against our teaching of spelling, and from every quarter comes the cry, What is the matter with our spelling teaching? The answer to this question may come from either or both of two sources; namely, (1) our spelling material, or word lists, may be at fault, and (2) our methods of teaching these lists may be bad. But when we note the different methods that have been used in teaching spelling in the last few years, and apparently with no great difference in ultimate success, it would seem that it is time for us to investigate our spelling material. Are the spelling lists which we are giving our students good or bad? Are these lists made up of words which children actually use, grade for grade, in their own free written speech? Or are they full of words which are as far beyond these children as our reading and arithmetic materials once were? It is this significant question that prompted the author of this book to conduct an eight years' research in the field of spelling material. Since this spelling book is based on the results of that *research, a brief description of the same is here given.
