Book The Teaching of Jesus and its Enduring Significance

Download or read book The Teaching of Jesus and its Enduring Significance written by Franz Brentano and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-21 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, for the first time in English, is Franz Brentano’s The Teaching of Jesus, a compendium of texts Brentano assembled for publication shortly before his death that constitute a frank, public settling of accounts with the Christian religion. Originally conceived by Brentano as a volume that might help others similarly led to doubt the doctrines of Christianity, the book is remarkably free of bitterness or spitefulness. On the contrary, what makes the book of singular importance, especially now, is its careful attempt at taking stock of the positive and negative influence Christianity has had in history. This text appeals to those researchers and scholars interested in the work of Franz Brentano and his work on the philosophy of religion, in this case, Christianity.

Book excerpt: Then the Laity will become more noble in character as were the Bereans, and with maturity, combine their faith with the Word allowing them to recognize when the leaders teach in ignorance of the Word. (acts 17:11, Heb. 4:2). Our Lords Beacon: The Elementary Teachings of Christ Jesus digs into the fundamental teachings of the doctrine of Christ Jesus. Many writings about the basics of Christianity have been published but without full knowledge of these six elementary truths, while using the meat of Gods Word, full maturity un a Christians life will never be attained. If we as Christians are stuck in the milk, in Gods eyes we are still yet infants since we are not yet acquainted with the teachings of the righteous. Furthermore, solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. One cannot use/digest solid food until one can fully digest the milk, and only if God permits it. (Heb. 5:13-14). Is todays church truly mature? Can todays church possibly be conducting itself and understanding good and evil as an infant, using only the milk of Gods Word? Is the world influencing the church more than the church is influencing the world? Can everything in todays church be traced back to The Elementary Teachings of Christ Jesus?

Book The Kingdom of God and the Church

  • Author : Geerhardus Vos
  • Publisher : Great Christian Books
  • Release : 2015-01-13
  • ISBN : 9781610100199
  • Pages : 130 pages

Download or read book The Kingdom of God and the Church written by Geerhardus Vos and published by Great Christian Books. This book was released on 2015-01-13 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geerhardus Vos devotes this work to a discussion of Jesus' greatest focus in ministry -- the "kingdom of God" (and the "kingdom of heaven," which Vos takes to be referencing the same thing.) Vos begins by connecting Christ's teaching on the kingdom to the Old Testament and its concepts of a Messianic king. Then he moves into the conception of the kingdom during the New Testament with a cursory analysis of the pertinent Greek phrases (but largely accessible to a layman). From there, he moves into the kingdom as it is now, and as it will be in the new heavens and the new earth. Finally, the remaining chapters detail specific aspects and characteristics of the kingdom as it currently exists including the church as it is also compared to the kingdom, and as the means by which one gains entrance into the kingdom. Vos' enlightening treatment of this important theme in the Scriptures ought to be read, particularly by pastors, to assist in preaching and teaching on passages dealing with this vital subject.

Book The Charismatic Leader and His Followers

Download or read book The Charismatic Leader and His Followers written by Martin Hengel and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-01-28 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking as his starting-point Jesus' saying in Matt 8:22, ÒLet the dead bury the dead,Ó Professor Hengel subjects Jesus' discipleship sayings to a rigorous historical scrutiny. The sharp break with contemporary Jewish mores in Matt 8:22 leads Hengel to a consideration of other contemporary forms of discipleship -- Cynic, Rabbinic, and Zealot. Rejecting the view that Jesus was some kind of rabbi, Hengel argues that there are, despite the obvious fundamental differences, closer similarities between Jesus and the charismatic-prophetic leaders of the Maccabean-Zealot tradition. Both his call to leave all and go after him and his freedom and authority over against the Law place him closer to the Zealots than to the scribes and their disciples whose relationship was foremost that of teacher and pupil. Thus Professor Hengel's magisterial command of Jewish and Hellenistic first-century material is here brought to bear on the figure of Jesus and we are given a remarkable series of historical insights into the character of Jesus' ministry and his work with his disciples. What emerges is a picture of Jesus fully as a man of his time but one whose authority is unique and whose call to share his fate in the service of the imminent Kingdom is without equivalent among his contemporaries. It is Professor Hengel's belief that the way to a proper understanding of Jesus' teaching can be only through the detailed critical study of the whole body of the synoptic sayings and pericopae. What he offers here takes its starting point in only one such pericope; yet the flood of light that this study sheds on Jesus' teaching and life is such that this book stands as one of the most important contributions to the continuing enquiry into the historical Jesus.
