Download or read book The Teaching of Jesus Concerning the Future Life Classic Reprint written by Willis Judson Beecher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Jesus Concerning the Future Life One who has not given much thought to the problem will probably reply Why, the whole thing is very simple; first settle the question of the trustworth iness of your witnesses, and then take their testimony. But that is not the way they do in a court of justice. They take the testimony of the witness first. They determine the trustworthiness largely by the nature of his testimony itself, and by his manner of giving it; and afterward by cross-examination and rebuttal and surrebuttal and other proc esses. Suppose we deal in the same way with the New Testament writings as witnesses concerning the teachings of Jesus. A world without God in fact would be either chaos or death. An orderly world is not possible apart from mind and a mind commensurate with so vast a problem. To admit that mind is to admit God. But the world can be without God even if God exists. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Teacher s Manual for the Teachings of Jesus Classic Reprint

Download or read book Teacher s Manual for the Teachings of Jesus Classic Reprint written by Harris Franklin Rall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teacher's Manual for the Teachings of Jesus Br way of introduction it might be shown how a man's thought of God Shapes all the rest Of his thinking, his thought of life, of duty, of religion, his hope for the future. That is one reason Why we begin with this doctrine in the teaching Of Jesus. But the main reason is that this was Jesus' greatest word to men, as it was the all-controlling reality of his life, God the Father. Here, as elsewhere, it is helpful to compare Jesus' teaching with what went before, noting how he continues what went before and, on the other hand, how he surpasses it. In esti mating the thought of the Old Testament about God we must not consider single passages here and there, but the dominant idea. Looking thus, we see that in the Old Testament God was King, in the New Testament he is Father. And yet for Jesus he is King as well as Father. We have here another lesson in which we must simplify and select. The best plan will be to group the teaching around the two phrases used as headings: The King is Father; the Father is King. The purpose Of the lesson is to bring out clearly this great conception of Jesus, and so lay the foundation for all the later study. I. The King is Father. Note how simple this idea is as compared with other conceptions of God; a child can under stand this. Show how rich it is and how much it involves. Then consider the tremendous faith of Jesus; he believed that love really sat on the throne Of the world. Do we really believe that? That rather belongs to the second part: II. The Father is King. This part Of the lesson will need special emphasis and development. The Old theologians emphasized God's sovereignty, modern thought emphasizes his Fatherhood; but Jesus includes both. We need a revival of this idea Of sovereignty. Here are rich practical lessons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Message in the Teaching of Jesus Ever. Draws from them, brings fresh life. The ebb brings new tasks; what the tide brought up, it collects, preserves, works up. In the place of production comes reproduc tion; the new is conserved, finally it be comes old, being long possessed, and the times gradually become ripe for the prophet, for the genius, who is to lift himself up and the times with him to a new development. Jesus descended from Israel's soil. One can hardly think too realistically of this, how much he was inwardly connected with the religious peculiarity of his people and their laws of development. He grew up under the influence of the ancient, sacred authorities of his people, the Scripture, the cult, the entire religious order of life and mode of thinking. These influences were especially strong about him. For according to its general nature the time of Jesus be longed on the whole to the more conserva tive and reproductive periods of Israel's his tory of religion. The synagogues were above all the places where the religious life of the Jews was moulded and fostered; in the synagogue, however, ruled the scribe and he was the keeper of tradition. No public. Book The Teaching of Jesus Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching of Jesus Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Hans Hinrich Wendt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Jesus, Vol. 1 of 2 It will be seen that, throughout the construction of the present work, our author stands on the scaffolding of his earlier work, in which he has devoted patient and inde pendent study to the examination of the Gospel sources. Here we have, not a process of destructive criticism, but a process of positive reconstruction on the basis of criticism. Many are inclined to ask, in regard to a criticism which seems only to achieve greater confusion and unsettlement of the grounds of Christian faith, What, then, shall we have left after this devastating flood has passed In the present work we have Dr. Wendt's answer to that question, so far as the teaching of Jesus is concerned. Here, he might say, is so much term firma, more or less perfectly reclaimed by historical research from the chaos into which the Zeitgeist of modern criticism had thrown the whole territory. Briefly, it may be said that, so far as criticism, apart from exegesis, is concerned, all fundamental Christian doctrine remains; for though some will take exception to the author's soteriology as being too subjective, in accordance with the theology of Ritschl, this too arises, not from the critical elimination of essential elements of the Gospel reports, but mainly from the fact that it is the teaching of Jesus, not also that of Paul, that is under discussion. In connection with this, the reader will not fail to bestow attention Upon the highly-suggestive preface which the author has written for this translation. Book The Message of Jesus to Men of Wealth Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Message of Jesus to Men of Wealth Classic Reprint written by George D. Herron and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Message of Jesus to Men of Wealth Among the notable signs Of the times is what might be called, for lack of a better term, the intellectual supremacy of Jesus Christ. He has always commanded the conscience even when the will has rebelled. For nineteen hundred years men have acknowledged Him to be the loftiest exemplar of all moral excellence even though they refused to follow in His footsteps. Men have willingly conceded to Him the deepest Spirit ual insight and the highest authority touching religious truth, even though they deemed the Sermon on the Mount inapplicable to practical life. They are now beginning to see that His Words contain the solution of the great problems of this life, as well as of that which IS to come that He 18 the Saviour of society no less than of individual souls; that to disregard His teachings is poor statesmanship and bad political economy as well as bad morals and irreligion. Property is one of the central facts of civilization. Its production, transportation and distribution, engage men's industries; its acquisition is the common object of endeavor; the love of it is the root of all evil. It would have been strange indeed if the Great Teacher had had little or nothing to say concerning so great a factor in human life. As a matter of fact he had very much to say concerning it, not only by way of illustration, but also touching the fundamental principles of its use.
