Download or read book The Teaching of History in Junior and Senior High Schoos Classic Reprint written by Rolla Milton Tryon and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of History in Junior and Senior High Schoos This book has been written in the interest of better history teaching. It deals in most part with what might be denominated everyday classroom problems in the teaching of history in the upper-elementary and high-school grades, both junior and senior. The technic of teaching has received the chief emphasis in the majority of the chapters, and the general psychological, pedagogical, and historical phases of the subject, as well as the unsettled problem of what to teach, have been omitted. The idea back of the discussion throughout is that there is a technic of teaching history in the junior and senior high schools that can be mastered by a teacher and actually applied in directing the daily classroom activities, regardless of the content of the course. The writer fully realizes the dangers accompanying a discussion which attempts to be so practical and concrete as the one contained in the following pages purports to be. When one presents a history-recitation score card, a specific procedure for supervised study in history, a detailed outline of how to use a textbook, a definite scheme to attain progress within the subject, directions for writing a term paper, concrete examples of the problem-solving method in history, and a score or more of similar suggestions, one is likely to be met with the objection that the specific procedure proposed is by no means the best or the only one. The author's rejoinder to such an objection is that in no case has he done more than present a way of doing a specific thing. This definiteness in all probability will be more helpful to some teachers than to others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book A History of the Book in America written by David Paul Nord and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth volume of A History of the Book in America addresses the economic, social, and cultural shifts affecting print culture from World War II to the present. During this period factors such as the expansion of government, the growth of higher education, the climate of the Cold War, globalization, and the development of multimedia and digital technologies influenced the patterns of consolidation and diversification established earlier. The thirty-three contributors to the volume explore the evolution of the publishing industry and the business of bookselling. The histories of government publishing, law and policy, the periodical press, literary criticism, and reading--in settings such as schools, libraries, book clubs, self-help programs, and collectors' societies--receive imaginative scrutiny as well. The Enduring Book demonstrates that the corporate consolidations of the last half-century have left space for the independent publisher, that multiplicity continues to define American print culture, and that even in the digital age, the book endures. Download or read book Alex Lord s British Columbia written by John Calam and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alex Lord, a pioneer inspector of rural British Columbia schools, shares in these recollections his experiences in a province barely out of the stage coach era. Travelling through vast northern territory, utilizing unreliable transportation and enduring climatic extremes, Lord became familiar with the aspirations of remote communities and their faith in the humanizing effects of tiny assisted schools. En route, he performed in resolute yet imaginative fashion the supervisory functions of a top government educator developing an educational philosophy of his own based on an understanding of the provincial geography, a reverence for citizenship, and a work ethic tuned to challenge and accomplishment. These memoirs invite the reader to experience the British Columbia that Alex Lord knew. Through his words, we endure the difficulties of travel in this mountainous province. We meet many of the unusual characters who inhabited this last frontier and learn of their hopes, fears, joys, sorrows, and eccentricities. More particularly, we are reminded of the historical significance of the one-room rural school and its role as an indispensable instrument of community cohesion. John Calam organizes the memoirs according to the regions through which Lord travelled. Included in the introduction are a biography of Alex Lord, a brief description of the British Columbia he knew, a sketch of the province's public education system and an assessment of the place Lord's writing now occupies among other works on education and society.
