This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of English Classics in the Grammar Grades: Suggestions for Study, Questions, and Subjects for Written Exercises on Standard Literature A piece of literature worthy to be studied in school, all the classics contained in the Riverside Literature Series, every such piece of literature is a work of art, of fine art. It represents an idea, one fundamental idea, just as a painting, a sculpture, an oratorio stands for one idea. This idea is the motif of the piece. TO find what this motif is, is the primary purpose Of reading any piece Of literature. Sometimes this purpose is stated in terms at the outset, as in the opening lines of Evangeline; sometimes it is not discovered until the piece is partially or entirely read, as in the Christmas Carol. The kind Of motif is very varied. In Enoch Arden it is the noblest emotion of the soul, self denial; in Rip Van Winkle, it is the embodiment of an interesting story in the wonder-book, it is the reproduction Of some ancient legends; in snow-bound, the apotheosis of home life; but always there is the theme which must be discovered before the piece Of literature can be under stood Or taught. Book Teaching and Learning English Grammar

Download or read book Teaching and Learning English Grammar written by MaryAnn Christison and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-02 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important contribution to the emerging body of research-based knowledge about English grammar, this volume presents empirical studies along with syntheses and overviews of previous and ongoing work on the teaching and learning of grammar for learners of English as a second/foreign language. It explores a variety of approaches, including form-focused instruction, content and language integration, corpus-based lexicogrammatical approaches, and social perspectives on grammar instruction. Nine chapter authors are Priority Research Grant or Doctoral Dissertation Grant awardees from The International Research Foundation for English Language Education (TIRF), and four overview chapters are written by well-known experts in English language education. Each research chapter addresses issues that motivated the research, the context of the research, data collection and analysis, findings and discussion, and implications for practice, policy, and future research. The TIRF-sponsored research was made possible by a generous gift from Betty Azar. This book honors her contributions to the field and recognizes her generosity in collaborating with TIRF to support research on English grammar. Teaching and Learning English Grammar is the second volume in the Global Research on Teaching and Learning English Series, co-published by Routledge and TIRF.

Book Grammar and the Teaching of Writing

Download or read book Grammar and the Teaching of Writing written by Rei R. Noguchi and published by National Council of Teachers of English (Ncte). This book was released on 1991 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for practitioners, this study has three principal aims: (1) to reduce the breadth of formal grammar instruction by first locating those areas where grammar and writing overlap and then identifying those kinds of writing problems most amenable to treatment with a grammar-based approach; (2) to decrease the classroom hours spent on formal grammar instruction by showing how to capitalize on the already acquired yet unconscious knowledge that all native writers have of their language; and (3) to make this streamlined "writer's grammar" more productive by showing how to integrate it with style, content, and organization. The book is directed toward teachers of writing who, to varying degrees, struggle with the unwieldy partnership of grammar and writing. Chapters 1 and 2 serve to examine some probable reasons why grammar instruction has failed to improve writing quality, to delimit radically the scope of grammar instruction, and to identify specific areas where a knowledge of a minimal set of grammatical categories might be of help. Chapters 3 and 4 focus on the use of native-speaker abilities in place of formal grammar instruction to treat certain kinds of sentence-level writing problems. Chapter 5 suggests a promising way to integrate the diminished focus on grammar with style, content, and organization. Finally, chapter 6 summarizes several pragmatic paradoxes that currently beset grammar instruction in the schools. (MG)
