Book The Teaching of Citizenship Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching of Citizenship Classic Reprint written by Edwin Holt Hughes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Citizenship A Book must be judged by its purpose and by the way in which it meets that purpose. The first test may be stated quite distinctly by the author; the second test must be applied by the reader. In order that this volume may not be judged by ends which it does not seek to reach, it may be well to state the intent. The purpose is to suggest certain natural and human starting points for the teaching of patriotism and citizenship. It is not claimed that the book is an exhaustive treatise, even of its simple kind. It suggests directions rather than goals. It does not offer a storehouse of information, nor does it seek to fill minds with lists and classifications. It rather aims to guide an instinct and promote a sentiment. From this it is plain that the material cannot be merely historical. Perhaps no study has been more closely related to citizenship than has history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Citizenship and the Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Citizenship and the Schools Classic Reprint written by Jeremiah W. Jenks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citizenship and the Schools It would be extremely useful if the teachers of any school system, through reading circles or otherwise, could arrange their subjects harmoniously with this end in view, each making his own subject teach citizenship from its own view-point, so that the work of each teacher would supplement that of every other. In the higher grades where special teachers of separate subjects are employed, those teaching arithmetic, for example, would do well to work out a series of lessons adapted to local economic and social conditions, so that, while suited to the teaching of arithmetical principles, the lessons would also contribute to the work in history, geography, literature and science. The teachers in geography, in the same way, should prepare a series of lessons that would be of service to the classes in history, literature, and mathematics, while the teachers of history, liter ature, and science should so plan their work as not only to bring out the full value of those subjects from the social point of view, but also, by so doing, make each subject supplement the others. Adaptability to human service is the element in each case which will unify them. In the lower grades where all classes are taught by one teacher, such harmonious working of the different subjects can readily enough be planned, provided due care is taken and each subject is considered from the point of view of its relations to social life. If this book can contribute in even a slight degree towards giving our teachers the view-point of social and political betterment as their chief aim in teaching, I shall be content. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boys' and Girls' Republic: d104-Book of the Art of Citizenship Republic method of teaching citizenship, with excel lent results and constant delight to the little citizens and themselves. Our first systematic experiment with democracy in a public school was in the form of a municipality and was called the School City. There was much published about it, and teachers in every direction used the method. Since then, we have used many forms of democratic government, such as those of a village, town, county, state and federal government, and we now use the term Republic, as that covers all the various forms. All of the several text-books that have been written to aid in the use of the laboratory or School Republic method of teaching citizenship are out of print, and this book is written to meet the immediate and growing demand for such a text-book. I have aimed to give in it such information as is needed by the oldest students to whom the privilege to use the method may come. At the same time I have endeavored to make it so simple that it may be used as a text-book in all grammar grades, and I trust that primary and kindergarten teachers will find in it the aid they need in steering the ships of state of their little republics. In the professions, in the crafts, in practically every vocation of civilized mankind, there have been set up specifications of the achievements required before members are recognized as masters of their several vocations - ia many cases before they can perform any of the tasks connected with them. A large part of the organized educational system of the world has been definitely designed to train for the achievement of the ends thus specified. N 0 such specifications have been established for citizenship which in a democratic community is the vocation of all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What to Do for Uncle Sam: A First Book of Citizenship The United States Bureau of Education lays emphasis upon the part of the schools in training for citizenship. It urges a new teaching of the subject, beginning with the home, going on to the school, and from there into community relations. The Government asks, also, that work in civics be begun in the elementary schools. The work should embody less of the details of governmental agencies, but focus instead upon the child's own community obligations and activities. Following this thought, and taking up the program of community civics outlined by the Bureau of Education, I have written "What to Do for Uncle Sam," a first book in patriotism and citizenship. At the end of each chapter I have placed questions and suggestions which establish a contact between the classroom and community life. The book lays emphasis on the home and the local community. The child may find many illustrations of the subjects in his own environment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Education of the American Citizen Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Education of the American Citizen Classic Reprint written by Arthur Twining Hadley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of the American Citizen IN many of the political writings of the day, there is a tendency to lay too much stress on the mechanism of government and of industry, and too little stress on the force by which this mechanism is kept at work. In recent educational movements, also, too much thought is perhaps given to the problem of preparing men and women to take their several places in a social machine, and too little to the development of that power and spirit upon which the perpetuation of our whole social order depends. From my public addresses and magazine articles of the past few years, I have tried to select those which emphasize the more neglected side of these questions, and to arrange them in a continuous series. In a book thus prepared, it is inevitable that there should be some repe tition and some apparent inconsistencies. If the reader is perplexed by any of these things, he will perhaps find the explanation in the date of the different utterances and the special conditions under which they were made public. Book The Practice of Citizenship

Download or read book The Practice of Citizenship written by Roscoe Lewis Ashley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practice of Citizenship: In Home, School, Business, and Community Education for citizenship is one of the first duties of any self-governing society. The practice of citizen ship is fully as important a duty. Since we learn by doing, we shall never become good citizens simply by studying civic relations and problems, that is, if we do no more than prepare ourselves for future duties and responsibilities. If citizenship were chiefly a matter of voting and of governmental activities, the schools would necessarily limit themselves to preparation for adult citizenship. But citizenship is far more than that. A person is a citizen because he is a member of a nation; but the nation is only the greatest and most important of a large number of civic groups of which all of us are members. A few of these groups, such as the state and municipality, are chiefly political; some of them, such as business organizations, are predominantly eco nomic; but for boys or girls real membership is limited chiefly to two social groups, the home and the school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethics of Citizenship This leads to an exposition in Elements of Political Consistency of the view that a sound practical judgment lies at the root of all true con sistenc'y; and to an analysis of the conditions which combine to make the judgment sound. Democracy ana' Character, which follows, is an attempt to estimate the influences which a demo cratic form of society, especially when it is com mercial and industrial, tends to exercise upon moral character. It is not denied that there are reasons for misgiving and apprehension; but, as against these, grounds for confidence are sought, firstly, in the fact that there is already so much in democratic development to strengthen the belief in the worth and possibilities of men; and, secondly.
