This book was released on 2019-05-20 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) provides disability compensation to veterans with a service-connected injury, and to receive disability compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), a veteran must submit a claim or have a claim submitted on his or her behalf. Evaluation of the Disability Determination Process for Traumatic Brain Injury in Veterans reviews the process by which the VA assesses impairments resulting from traumatic brain injury for purposes of awarding disability compensation. This report also provides recommendations for legislative or administrative action for improving the adjudication of veterans' claims seeking entitlement to compensation for all impairments arising from a traumatic brain injury.

Book Neuroinflammation Neurodegeneration and Metabolic Disease From Molecular Mechanisms to Therapeutic Innovation

Download or read book Neuroinflammation Neurodegeneration and Metabolic Disease From Molecular Mechanisms to Therapeutic Innovation written by Fawaz Alzaid and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-09-05 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuroinflammation manifests as changes to cognition or behavior, or as altered function in peripheral tissues. Patients with metabolic diseases (e.g., diabetes, obesity) are more likely to suffer with neuroinflammation since the disrupted metabolism and chronic low-grade inflammation that accompany metabolic diseases extends to the nervous system. Neuroinflammation will then lead to functional impairment and progressive loss of neuronal structure, with neurodegeneration being the end result. Factors like chronic hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia and insulin resistance are candidate drivers of neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. The effects on the nervous system also contribute to worsening insulin resistance and a further loss of metabolic function and homeostasis in innervated peripheral tissues (e.g., liver, adipose tissue). Persistent metabolic stress predisposes patients to peripheral neuropathies, cognitive dysfunction, and development of neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease). Multiple associations link metabolic disease to neuropathology, targeting neuroinflammation to preserve neuronal integrity holds promise for managing metabolic diseases and associated neurological complications. Research on "Neuroinflammation, Neurodegeneration and Metabolic Disease: From Molecular Mechanisms to Therapeutic Innovation" is necessary to address several critical gaps in our understanding and treatment of metabolic diseases and of neuropathology. Firstly, while the role of systemic inflammation in metabolic diseases has been extensively studied, the specific impact of nervous system inflammation – neuroinflammation – and resulting neurodegeneration on these conditions is still an emerging field. Investigating the mechanisms by which neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration contribute to metabolic diseases can provide valuable insights into the pathogenesis and progression of these conditions.

Book New Insights and Perspectives on Traumatic Brain Injury Integration Translation and Multidisciplinary Approaches

Download or read book New Insights and Perspectives on Traumatic Brain Injury Integration Translation and Multidisciplinary Approaches written by Zhou Zhou and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-07-01 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains one of healthcare's most significant challenges and policy making. TBI could not only lead to long-term functional impairment but also a decrease in quality of life. Lowering the mortality risk and benefitting survivors' living quality remains the target of neurotrauma studies globally. With the advent of novel TBI-related clinical and basic research approaches, diagnostics, therapeutics research, and novel and multidisciplinary methods have emerged. Despite promising progress, no completely effective treatment prevents or minimizes TBI and its related neurological and psychiatric sequelae. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology, treatment progress, and clinically based translational and engineering research on TBI may pave the way for potential treatment targets, diagnostic markers, and preventive methods that ultimately lead to efficacious therapeutic strategies. This Research Topic aims to disseminate high-quality TBI and related research, especially for the compositive and in-depth study in integration, translation, and multidisciplinary approaches in TBI research, including new technology and research methods in clinical neurology, new findings in neuroendocrinology, neuropathology and new development in neuropharmacology, neurophysiology. This Research Topic is focused on novel developments, current challenges, future perspectives, and especially interdisciplinary research in the field of TBI.

Book Public Real Estate Markets and Investments

Download or read book Public Real Estate Markets and Investments written by H. Kent Baker and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-07 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real estate is typically classified as an alternative to more traditional investments such as stocks and bonds. Real estate investing involves the purchase, ownership, management, rental, or sale of real estate for profit. Real estate investments can be both income producing and non-income producing. Although real estate can produce income like a bond and appreciate like a stock, this tangible asset has several unique characteristics as well as advantages and disadvantages relative to other investment alternatives. Benefits of including real estate in a portfolio include diversification, yield enhancement, risk reduction, tax management, and inflation hedging. Unlike traditional investments, investors in real estate have the ability to influence performance. Real estate has drawbacks in that it requires management, is costly and difficult to buy, sell, and operate, and sometimes has lower liquidity. Additionally, measuring the relative performance of real estate can be challenging. The purpose of this 14-chapter book is to provide an overview and synthesis of public real estate markets and investments in a global context. The book discusses the major types and the latest trends within public real estate markets and presents the results of research studies in a straightforward manner. It has three sections: (1) foundations of public real estate, (2) public debt markets and investments, and (3) public equity markets and investments. The book should be interest to various groups including academics, practitioners, investors, and students. Readers should gain a greater appreciation of what is needed for success when investing in public real estate markets. For more information about private real estate, read Private Real Estate Markets and Investments.
