Download or read book The Tao of the Chessboard written by Dale Smith and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2008-07 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tao of the Chessboard is not about chess although it contains chess puzzles, some cryptic chess jargon and many allusions to the "Royal Game." The Tao of the Chessboard is really an invitation to mastery. There are a multitude of influences converging in this one work: Jewish Wisdom Literature, New Testament literary conventions, Li Po and the Taoist poets, Zen Buddhist images and especially the wisdom of the Tao Te Ching. All of these pieces have been thrown up into the air and have landed on the chessboard to form a coherent whole. These verses invite the reader to a life of discipline and delight. The Tao of the Chessboard also contains two additional works: Forty Years in Haikuand Endgame: Selected Poetry. The former is akin to a spiritual autobiography that is intimately linked to nature and geography. The latter is an offering for the altar of Polyhymnia. DALE SMITH is a perennial student who occasionally earns a degree. He holds a B. A. from Southwest Baptist University (Bolivar, Missouri), an M. Div. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (Fort Worth, Texas) and an S. T. M from Yale University (New Haven, Connecticut). Dale is an avid reader, an amateur chess player and an itinerant preacher. He spends much of his time observing that "sitting quietly, doing nothing, Spring comes and the grass grows by itself." His dream is to visit the lands of Middle-earth and settle down in the Shire. However, he currently lives in Blue Springs, Missouri with Teresa and their halfling, Andrew.

Book excerpt: Life is like a play, young master Qing Yi. What was distinct in black and white was the chess game; what was indistinct was the human heart. Chess is difficult to decide, step by step, one wrong move, all lost. He was gentle and refined, drunk and free from worldly strife; he wore an open and upright robe, his reputation as a man of the world was just like smoke passing through his eyes; he lowered his eyebrows and gave a slight smile. He was playful, dashing, and elegant; he had a fan in his hand; it was common for people to fight openly or secretly, and they would look down on him with their heads held high. It was originally a different life, yet it became a straight line that led to a completely different end point. Was he going to be reborn from the flames? When the chessboard was no longer black and white, when every single chess piece was imbued with the hearts of the people, vividly displaying the word "chess", the chessboard would no longer be a chessboard, but a formidable game. Book The Tao of Alibaba

Download or read book The Tao of Alibaba written by Brian A Wong and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a long-time Alibaba executive and former special assistant to Jack Ma, this is the first book to articulate how Alibaba's unique culture and “tai chi” management principles are providing a business and economic development model for the rest of the world. If you took the economic might of Amazon, and added the penetration of Facebook, the ubiquity of Google, and the cultural significance of YouTube, you might have something starting to resemble Alibaba. Commonly mischaracterized as a kind of Chinese eBay for businesses, Alibaba and its interlinked network of products and services have exploded into global markets, disrupting conventional businesses and creating previously unimaginable opportunities for millions of small businesses worldwide. This book reveals the Tao of Alibaba—the company’s “secret sauce”—a consciously cultivated ethos and spirit that has enabled Alibaba to weather tough times and setbacks, and persist toward a common mission. It is a blueprint of the company’s management philosophy, crystalized into the most important elements that have driven its success, and it provides a road map for how to incorporate these principles into any organization’s operations. Wong distills his nearly two decades of experience inside the company to show readers how to align their organization’s capabilities with performance-maximizing tools in order to achieve success. But most importantly, the Tao of Alibaba teaches the pursuit of greater purpose and meaning, steering entrepreneurs to view their ventures as a vehicle for having profound and lasting impacts on their communities. Ultimately, the lessons shared in The Tao of Alibaba will serve as timeless tools for any entrepreneur seeking to configure their organization toward purpose and impact.

Book The Tao of Willie

Download or read book The Tao of Willie written by Willie Nelson and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2006-05-09 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in small-town Texas during the Great Depression, Willie Nelson was raised to believe in helping his neighbors and living without pretense. After many hardscrabble years as a poorly paid songwriter (often watching his work become a gold mine for other performers), Willie finally found his own voice—the gentle but unmistakably honest sound that has made him an American icon. Now the master of harmonization has created a guide to finding harmony in everyday life. Featuring vignettes from each chapter of his seventy-plus years (along with plenty of his favorite jokes), The Tao of Willie captures his views on money, love, war, religion, cowboys, and other essential Willie topics. Loosely based on the principles of the Chinese philosophy of the Tao Te Cheng, which Willie has admired and followed for much of his adult life, this inspiring and entertaining collection of "Willie wisdom" takes us from his roadhouse days, when he united redneck rockers with straitlaced country music fans, to the mega-sized benefit concerts and environmentalism that define his boundless heart. In the spirit of his fellow Texan Harvey Penick's Little Red Book, Willie's timeless insights sparkle with clarity: It's like having a one-on-one conversation with the sage himself.

In addition to owning his own law firm, he is a CPA, martial artist, dynamic speaker and performer, and the motion capture model for some of the biggest action video games in the industry. Book George Yeo on Bonsai Banyan and the Tao

Download or read book George Yeo on Bonsai Banyan and the Tao written by ASAD-UL Iqbal LATIF and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-05-18 with total page 811 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since his undergraduate days in Cambridge, George Yeo has spoken and written much in and out of government. Many remember the things which he said or wrote years ago. This book is a compilation of some of his best speeches and writings which were selected by Asad Latif and Lee Huay Leng in consultation with him. The book has a rather unusual title because there are many aspects to George Yeo which makes him difficult to classify. As a student leader, he was radical but conciliatory. In the Singapore Armed Forces, he was atypical, moving from the Army to the Air Force before becoming Director of Joint Operations and Planning. In politics, he is fondly remembered by artists, journalists, doctors, businessmen and foreign diplomats, and by his colleagues and constituents. His own staff said he had a curious mind. They complained that he rarely used the drafts which they had prepared for him. George Yeo describes himself as a Taoist even though he is a Roman Catholic and is now on the Papal staff. Buddhists are surprised he championed the revival of Nalanda University as an international project. He remains close to Singaporeans of different races and religions even though he has a deep sense of his own ancestral roots and religion. In politics, he has been described both as a liberal and a conservative. In his Parliamentary maiden speech, he spoke of the importance of democracy but has repeated many times that democracy is only a means and not an end in itself. He has a deep interest in history which partly explains his seeing the re-emergence of China and India earlier than most others. The bonsai and the banyan are metaphors he uses for Singapore. Singapore is a city-state and must never have an inflated view of itself. The bonsai describes Singapore modestly, but he adds that the bonsai can be intensely interesting and valuable. The banyan provides shade and we are grateful for it, but too much makes us weak. As for the Tao, that perhaps is what gives unity to his many interests."--

In The Tao of Warren Buffett, Mary Buffett—author of three books on Warren Buffett's investment methods—joins noted Buffettologist and international lecturer David Clark to bring you Warren Buffett's smartest, funniest, and most memorable sayings with an eye toward revealing the life philosophy and the investment strategies that have made Warren Buffett, and the shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway, so enormously wealthy. Warren Buffett's investment achievements are unparalleled. He owes his success to hard work, integrity, and that most elusive commodity of all, common sense. The quotations in this book exemplify Warren's practical strategies and provide useful illustrations for every investor—large or small—and models everyone can follow. The quotes are culled from a variety of sources, including personal conversations, corporate reports, profiles, and interviews. The authors provide short explanations for each quote and use examples from Buffett's own business transactions whenever possible to illustrate his words at work. As Warren says: "You should invest in a business that even a fool can run, because someday a fool will." "No matter how great the talent or effort, some things just take time: You can't produce a baby in one month by getting nine women pregnant." "Our method is very simple. We just try to buy businesses with good-to-superb underlying economics run by honest and able people and buy them at sensible prices. That's all I'm trying to do." The Tao of Warren Buffett inspires, amuses, sharpens the mind, and offers priceless investment savvy that anyone can take to the bank. This irresistibly browsable and entertaining book is destined to become a classic.
