Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the United States declared war against Germany in April 1917, the US Army established the Tank Corps to help break the deadlock of trench warfare in France during World War I. The army envisioned having a large tank force by 1919, but when the war ended in November 1918, only three tank battalions had participated in combat operations. Shortly after, Brigadier General Samuel D. Rockenbach, Chief of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) Tank Corps under General John J. Pershing, issued a memorandum to many of his officers to write brief accounts of their experiences that would supplement official records. Their narratives varied in size, scope, and depth, and covered a range of topics, including the organizing, training, and equipping of the tank corps. For the first time since these reports were submitted, Pershing's Tankers: Personal Accounts of the AEF Tank Corps in World War I presents an unprecedented look into the experiences of soldiers in the US Army Tank Corps. The book provides fresh insight into the establishment and combat operations of the tank corps, including six personal letters written by Colonel George S. Patton, Jr., who commanded a tank brigade in World War I. Congressional testimony, letters, and a variety of journal, magazine, and newspaper articles in this collection provide additional context to the officers' revealing accounts.Based on completely new sources that include official US Army personnel reports that were previously unknown to researchers, this illuminating work offers a vivid picture of life and activities in the US Army Tank Corps in France. Revealed is a rare glimpse into the thoughts and experiences of a broad cross-section of men from the senior leadership down to the platoon level, and a behind-the-scenes look into how this first generation of "tankers" helped develop new war-fighting capabilities for the US Army.

Download or read book US Marine Corps Tanks of World War II written by Steven J. Zaloga and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-20 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, the US Marine Corps formed six tank battalions that battled through the harsh conditions of the Pacific Theatre. Using the same basic tanks as the US Army, notably the M3 and M5A1 light tanks and the M4 Sherman medium tank, the marines made both technical and tactical innovations to make them more effective in the fight against the Japanese. Deep wading equipment, flamethrower tanks, and even wooden armor all became part of the Marine arsenal. This book examines the tactics and technology that made the US Marine Corps tank service unique in the annals of warfare.

Book Operations of the Tank Corps A E F

Download or read book Operations of the Tank Corps A E F written by Samuel D. Rockenbach and published by . This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operations of the Tank Corps A.E.F. is the definitive treatise on the American Tank Corps in World War I, written by Brigadier General Samuel D. Rockenbach, its first commander. Commonly referred to as "The Rockenbach Report," only a few typed copies are known to exist. It has never been published-until now. Much has been published about one of Rockenbach's subordinate officers at the time, the famous World War II commander George S. Patton, Jr. But General Rockenbach is a much less familiar figure historically although he was hand-picked by General John J. Pershing to design, organize, man, train and deploy Tanks into 1918 France as part of the American Expeditionary Forces. Written in the same month as the Armistice was signed, General Rockenbach relates his experiences in developing and fielding this fearsome new combat arm, candidly citing the challenges as well as the victories. Appended to the original-and included here-are supporting documents, presented in their entirety. Significant portions of these documents are either paraphrased or directly quoted in the main body of the Report. This is especially true in the chapters pertaining to operations at the Battle of St. Mihiel and in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. These are the unedited versions. They include the organization and manning list for the Tank Corps as of September 10, 1918, operations reports from the 304th (1st Provisional) Tank Brigade (commanded by George S. Patton, Jr.) and the 1st French Brigade on the Battle of St. Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. Also included is complete text of the operations report from the 301st American Tank Battalion, which had been allotted to the Australian Corps.

Book excerpt: The first full study of the US Army’s World War I Tank Corps—and how it inspired future American generals. Tanks caused havoc among the Germans when they first appeared on the battlefields of Europe in 1917. These metal monsters broke up the trench warfare stalemate and thus hastened the armistice. Because of production delays and political maneuvering, no American tanks made it into the war, and American tankers had to use French machines instead. But a new breed of army officers, of which Eisenhower and Patton are the most famous, saw the promise of this new technology and staked their careers on it. Ike trained the first generation of tankers at Camp Colt at Gettysburg, and Patton led them into battle in France. Dale E. Wilson, a Vietnam veteran and former West Point history professor, brings these early days of the Tank Corps to life. Using eyewitness accounts from the archives at the Army War College and elsewhere, he details the design and building of the first tanks, the training of crews, the monstrous problem of transport in an age when roads were built for horse-drawn carriages, the evolution of armored combat doctrine, and the three great battles in which tanks revolutionized modern warfare: St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and St. Quentin. “Breathes life into the early days of the Tank Corps by drawing from extensive research, including firsthand accounts.” —Toy Soldier & Model Figure

Book Seek Strike and Destroy

Download or read book Seek Strike and Destroy written by Christopher Richard Gabel and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the seventy years that have passed since the tank first appeared, antitank combat has presented one of the greatest challenges in land warfare. Dramatic improvements in tank technology and doctrine over the years have precipitated equally innovative developments in the antitank field. One cycle in this ongoing arms race occurred during the early years of World War II when the U.S. Army sought desperately to find an antidote to the vaunted German blitzkrieg. This Leavenworth Paper analyzes the origins of the tank destroyer concept, evaluates the doctrine and equipment with which tank destroyer units fought, and assesses the effectiveness of the tank destroyer in battle.
