Book excerpt: Some of the feathered folk in Pleasant Valley said that old Mr. Crow was the noisiest person in the neighborhood. But they must have forgotten all about Mr. Crow's knavish cousin, Jasper Jay. And it was not only in summer, either, that Jasper's shrieks and laughter woke the echoes. Since it was his habit to spend his winters right there in Farmer Green's young pines, near the foot of Blue Mountain, on many a cold morning Jasper's ear-splitting "Jay! jay!" rang out on the frosty air. At that season Jasper often visited the farm buildings, in the hope of finding a few kernels of corn scattered about the door of the corn-crib. But it seemed to make little difference to him whether he found food there or not. If he caught the cat out of doors he had good sport teasing her. And he always enjoyed that.

Book excerpt: Old Mr. Crow was apparently not the noisiest person in the neighborhood. Any who think so must have forgotten all about Mr. Crow's knavish cousin, Jasper Jay, and it was not only in summer, either, that Jasper's shrieks and laughter woke the echoes. Farmer Green once remarked, "He reminds me of a bad boy," Johnnie Green's father said one day. "He's mischievous and destructive; and he's forever screeching and whistling. But there's something about him that I can't help liking. Maybe it's because he always has such a good time." I should let you know things don't always go his way. When you read the story you'll see what I mean. An American writer of more than forty children's books, Arthur Scott Bailey was born in St. Albans, Vermont. The Newark News stated, "Mr. Bailey centered all his plots in the animal, bird and insect worlds, weaving natural history into the stories in a way that won educator's approval without arousing the suspicions of his young readers. He made it a habit to never 'write down' to children and frequently used words beyond the average juvenile vocabulary, believing that youngsters respond to the stimulus of the unfamiliar."

Book excerpt: JASPER JAY had some queer notions in his head. One of them was that a person couldn't be happyunless he was making a great deal of noise. And if there was anything that roused Jasper's wrath, itwas the sight of some quiet, modest little neighbor who minded his own affairs and had little to say. There was one such chap who made his home in a wild grapevine that grew upon the stone wall infront of the farmhouse. His name was Mr. Chippy; and he was never known to do anybody the leastbit of harm. On the contrary, he was quitep. 7 helpful to Farmer Green's wife, for he went to thefarmhouse almost every day and cleared the crumbs off the kitchen doorstep. But Jasper Jay complained that Mr. Chippy was altogether too humble."He never says anything except 'Chip, chip, chip, chip, '" Jasper often remarked. "And his voice is sohigh and thin that anybody would think he was a little old lady, to hear him. He's too quiet to get onin the world. And as for a good time, I don't believe he ever had one in all his life."Jasper said a good many other unpleasant things about mild Mr. Chippy. And one day when thesaucy rascal had nothing better to do he flew over to the stone wall just to talk to Mr. Chippy andtell him what he thought of him."Hi there, red-head!" Jasper Jayp. 8 shouted. "Come out here on the wall! I want to see you."Mr. Chippy thrust his chestnut crowned head through the leaves of the wild grapevine. And onecould hardly say that he looked pleased. Like most people, he was not overjoyed by Jasper Jay'svisits. But he crept on top of the stone wall and chipped a how-dy-do to his caller

Book The Differentiated Classroom

Download or read book The Differentiated Classroom written by Carol Ann Tomlinson and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2014-05-25 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although much has changed in schools in recent years, the power of differentiated instruction remains the same—and the need for it has only increased. Today's classroom is more diverse, more inclusive, and more plugged into technology than ever before. And it's led by teachers under enormous pressure to help decidedly unstandardized students meet an expanding set of rigorous, standardized learning targets. In this updated second edition of her best-selling classic work, Carol Ann Tomlinson offers these teachers a powerful and practical way to meet a challenge that is both very modern and completely timeless: how to divide their time, resources, and efforts to effectively instruct so many students of various backgrounds, readiness and skill levels, and interests. With a perspective informed by advances in research and deepened by more than 15 years of implementation feedback in all types of schools, Tomlinson explains the theoretical basis of differentiated instruction, explores the variables of curriculum and learning environment, shares dozens of instructional strategies, and then goes inside elementary and secondary classrooms in nearly all subject areas to illustrate how real teachers are applying differentiation principles and strategies to respond to the needs of all learners. This book's insightful guidance on what to differentiate, how to differentiate, and why lays the groundwork for bringing differentiated instruction into your own classroom or refining the work you already do to help each of your wonderfully unique learners move toward greater knowledge, more advanced skills, and expanded understanding. Today more than ever, The Differentiated Classroom is a must-have staple for every teacher's shelf and every school's professional development collection.

Book Borges and Me

Download or read book Borges and Me written by Jay Parini and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this evocative work of what the author in his afterword calls “a kindof novelistic memoir,” Jay Parini takes us back fifty years, when he fled the United States for Scotland—in flight from the Vietnam War and desperately in search of his adult life. There, through unlikely circumstances, he meets the famed Argentinian author Jorge Luis Borges. Borges—visiting his translator in Scotland—is in his seventies, blind and frail. When Borges hears that Parini owns a 1957 Morris Minor, he declares a long-held wish to visit the Highlands, where he hopes to meet a man in Inverness who is interested in Anglo-Saxon riddles. As they travel, stopping at various sites of historical interest, the charmingly garrulous Borges takes Parini on a grand tour of Western literature and ideas, while promising to teach him about love and poetry. As Borges’s idiosyncratic world of labyrinths, mirrors, and doubles shimmers into being, their escapades take a surreal turn. Borges and Me is a classic road novel, based on true events. It’s also a magical mystery tour of an era, like our own, in which uncertainties abound, and when—as ever—it’s the young and the old who hear voices and dream dreams.

Download or read book Passionate Politics written by Jeff Goodwin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-03-09 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emotions are back. Once at the center of the study of politics, emotions have receded into the shadows during the past three decades, with no place in the rationalistic, structural, and organizational models that dominate academic political analysis. With this new collection of essays, Jeff Goodwin, James M. Jasper, and Francesca Polletta reverse this trend, reincorporating emotions such as anger, indignation, fear, disgust, joy, and love into research on politics and social protest. The tools of cultural analysis are especially useful for probing the role of emotions in politics, the editors and contributors to Passionate Politics argue. Moral outrage, the shame of spoiled collective identities, or the joy of imagining a new and better society, are not automatic responses to events. Rather, they are related to moral institutions, felt obligations and rights, and information about expected effects, all of which are culturally and historically variable. With its look at the history of emotions in social thought, examination of the internal dynamics of protest groups, and exploration of the emotional dynamics that arise from interactions and conflicts among political factions and individuals, Passionate Politics will lead the way toward an overdue reconsideration of the role of emotions in social movements and politics generally.
