Download or read book Setting the People Free written by John Dunn and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does democracy—as a word and as an idea—loom so large in the political imagination, though it has so often been misused and misunderstood? Setting the People Free starts by tracing the roots of democracy from an improvised remedy for a local Greek difficulty 2,500 years ago, through its near extinction, to its rebirth amid the struggles of the French Revolution. Celebrated political theorist John Dunn then charts the slow but insistent metamorphosis of democracy over the next 150 years and its apparently overwhelming triumph since 1945. He examines the differences and the extraordinary continuities that modern democratic states share with their Greek antecedents and explains why democracy evokes intellectual and moral scorn for some, and vital allegiance from others. Now with a new preface and conclusion that ground this landmark work firmly in the present, Setting the People Free is a unique and brilliant account of an extraordinary idea.

Download or read book The Everything Theodore Roosevelt Book written by Arthur G Sharp and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-08-18 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You probably know bits and pieces about Theodore Roosevelt: He was the President of the United States, led the charge up San Juan Hill, had something to do with the "Bull Moose" party, and is represented on Mt. Rushmore. That's a start. But his accomplishments went far beyond that. This book expands that list and highlights his most significant contributions to history, including: His role in the creation of the Panama Canal How he ended the Russo-Japanese War His "trust busting," which brought corporations under the control of the people The impact of his conservation efforts How he built up the navy and established the United States as a world power A refreshing alternative to the stuffy, overly academic books on the market, this book is the definitive guide for you to learn more about one of the most successful U.S. presidents, scholars, and statesmen in world history.

Download or read book Bureaucrats and Beggars written by Thomas McStay Adams and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991-01-31 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-eighteenth century in France, the royal authorities launched a new campaign to sweep beggars from the streets, pinning their hopes on the creation of a uniform royal network of lock-ups in which anyone found begging might be detained. In this study, Adams probes the accomplishments and the failings of these so-called dépôts de mendicité, as seen by critics of the experiment (including learned judges and influential spokesmen of the provincial Estates) and as seen by those responsible for its success: the provincial intendants, the royal engineers, the doctors, the inspectors, the contractors, and various givers of advice. He shows how the debate--both internal and external--over the operation of the dépôts contributed to the intellectual ferment of the Enlightenment and the Revolution. The resulting web of reasoning and empirical data gave support to Montesquieu's principle that the state owes every one of its citizens "a secure subsistence, suitable food and clothing, and a manner of life that is not contrary to good health."
