Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984. Paul Henri Thiery, Baron d'Holbach (1723-1789), was the center of the radical wing of the philosophers. Holbach wrote, translated, edited, and issued a stream of books and pamphlets, often under other names, that has made him the despair of bibliographers but has connected his name, by innuendo, gossip, and association, with most of what was written in defeense of atheistic materialism in late eighteenth-century France. Holbach is best known for The System of Nature (1770) and deservedly, since it is a clear exposition of his main ideas. His initial position determines all the rest of his argument: 'There is not, there can be nothing out of that Nature which includes all beings.' Conceiving of nature as strictly limited to matter and motion, both of which have always existed, he flatly denies that there is any such thing as spirit or supernatural. This is the first of three volumes.

Book excerpt: Human health depends on the health of the planet. Earth’s natural systems—the air, the water, the biodiversity, the climate—are our life support systems. Yet climate change, biodiversity loss, scarcity of land and freshwater, pollution and other threats are degrading these systems. The emerging field of planetary health aims to understand how these changes threaten our health and how to protect ourselves and the rest of the biosphere. Planetary Health: Protecting Nature to Protect Ourselves provides a readable introduction to this new paradigm. With an interdisciplinary approach, the book addresses a wide range of health impacts felt in the Anthropocene, including food and nutrition, infectious disease, non-communicable disease, dislocation and conflict, and mental health. It also presents strategies to combat environmental changes and its ill-effects, such as controlling toxic exposures, investing in clean energy, improving urban design, and more. Chapters are authored by widely recognized experts. The result is a comprehensive and optimistic overview of a growing field that is being adopted by researchers and universities around the world. Students of public health will gain a solid grounding in the new challenges their profession must confront, while those in the environmental sciences, agriculture, the design professions, and other fields will become familiar with the human consequences of planetary changes. Understanding how our changing environment affects our health is increasingly critical to a variety of disciplines and professions. Planetary Health is the definitive guide to this vital field.

Book Design in Nature

  • Release : 2013-01-08
  • ISBN : 0307744345
  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book Design in Nature written by Adrian Bejan and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2013-01-08 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book, Adrian Bejan takes the recurring patterns in nature—trees, tributaries, air passages, neural networks, and lightning bolts—and reveals how a single principle of physics, the constructal law, accounts for the evolution of these and many other designs in our world. Everything—from biological life to inanimate systems—generates shape and structure and evolves in a sequence of ever-improving designs in order to facilitate flow. River basins, cardiovascular systems, and bolts of lightning are very efficient flow systems to move a current—of water, blood, or electricity. Likewise, the more complex architecture of animals evolve to cover greater distance per unit of useful energy, or increase their flow across the land. Such designs also appear in human organizations, like the hierarchical “flowcharts” or reporting structures in corporations and political bodies. All are governed by the same principle, known as the constructal law, and configure and reconfigure themselves over time to flow more efficiently. Written in an easy style that achieves clarity without sacrificing complexity, Design in Nature is a paradigm-shifting book that will fundamentally transform our understanding of the world around us.

Book First Outline of a System of the Philosophy of Nature

Download or read book First Outline of a System of the Philosophy of Nature written by F. W. J. Schelling and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appearing here in English for the first time, this is F. W. J. Schelling's vital document of the attempts of German Idealism and Romanticism to recover a deeper relationship between humanity and nature and to overcome the separation between mind and matter induced by the modern reductivist program. Written in 1799 and building upon his earlier work, First Outline of a System of the Philosophy of Nature provides the most inclusive exposition of Schelling's philosophy of the natural world. He presents a startlingly contemporary model of an expanding and contracting universe; a unified theory of electricity, gravity magnetism, and chemical forces; and, perhaps most importantly, a conception of nature as a living and organic whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The System of Nature Vol. 2 is the second volume of a philosophical work written by the French philosopher Paul Henri Thiery, also known as Baron d'Holbach. In Volume 2, d'Holbach builds on the materialist and atheistic worldview presented in Volume 1, exploring topics such as ethics, politics, and the nature of human society. He states that the universe is governed by natural laws and that all human behavior can be explained in terms of these laws, without the need for supernatural or spiritual explanations. The book is divided into several sections, each exploring a different aspect of human society and behavior. D'Holbach argues that morality is a natural phenomenon that arises from human interactions, rather than a set of rules imposed by a higher power. He also discusses the role of government and the need for political reform to create a more just and equal society.

Book System of Nature by Baron D Holbach 2 Volumes in One

Download or read book System of Nature by Baron D Holbach 2 Volumes in One written by Balraj K. Joshi and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-04-23 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to dHolbach, nature is a great chain of causes and effects. Nature is the great whole, comprising everything visible and invisible. Baron d Holbach gives the laws of the physical world based on laws of motion and gravitation, as given by Newton, and he wants to apply the law of attraction and repulsion in the field of morality. All knowledge comes through the sense organs created by the impressions of the world and deposited in the brain, which is the real seat of thought. Man searches for happiness in this world, but the priesthood misguides the people by asking them to look for happiness in future life, as guided by the chimeras of religion. Man living in society should be guided by reason, experience, and sciences by working for his happiness and contributing to the happiness of other members of the society by his hard work, talent, and virtues, by being useful to others by satisfying their needs while satisfying his own needs. Happiness is on this earth, and by reason and experience, he can be happy, and not as the priesthood preaches in another future life.
