It recounts that, during the episcopate of Bishop Rabbula, the bishop of Edessa, St. Alexis lived as a beggar and shared the alms he received with other poor of the city. His charity and piety made him famous, and following his death, he was revealed to be a Roman by birth.

It is drawn upon a Georgian manuscript composed around the 13th or 14th century, relating events of Christian Martyrs during the reign of the emperor Diocletian. These events either appears as a leaf from a synaxarium or an older work of hagiography that appears to have traveled through the Sassanian Empire before arriving in Georgia prior to the 6th century. Its manuscript source is unknown as it has no known parallels in the lives of medieval saints. The martyrs themselves are said to have been residing in Roman Arabia, near the mercantile city of Petra at the end of the 3rd century. This work therefore provides a rare insight into the little known world of early Arabic Christianity, and make some curious allusion to a place called 'Bacca', otherwise only noted in the Quran.

Nowhere is this description more accurate than in the domain of poetic invention. The years 1050 to 1200 witnessed the development of a brilliant body of vernacular narrative that not only expressed the complexity of its own time but also bequeathed to posterity a wide gamut of creative possibilities. Although much has been written about the works of this period, Karl Uitti offers the first critically orientated overview of this poetry as poetry. In the sections devoted to the Songs of Alexis and Roland he studies the narrative as it serves, in various ways, truths exterior to its own organization. These include the implications of Alexis' imitation of Christ and the way the Song of Roland is history conceived in literary and poetic terms. Although a number of devices are examined, the poems are seen in terms of their total significance. The second part of the book, dedicate principally to the œuvre of Chrétien de Troyes, discusses a new kind of poetry, poetry whose truth depends on the reader's submitting entirely to the internal coherence of each work—in a very meaningful sense the poem itself is the thing. He explores the concept of holy folly by relating Symeon's life to the gospels, to earlier hagiography, and to anecdotes about Diogenes the Cynic. The Life is one of the strangest works of the Late Antique hagiography. Symeon seemed a bizarre choice for sanctification, since it was through very peculiar antics that he converted heretics and reformed sinners. Symeon acted like a fool, walked about naked, ate enormous quantities of beans, and defecated in the streets. When he arrived in Emesa, Symeon tied a dead dog he found on a dunghill to his belt and entered the city gate, dragging the dog behind him. Krueger presents a provocative interpretation of how these bizarre antics came to be instructive examples to everyday Christians. It sets before us writers, public figures, criminals, saints, and monarchs, as well as religious, cultural, and social revolutions. It gives us books, paintings, public monuments, even TV shows. Written by 164 American and European specialists, the essays are introduced by date and arranged in chronological order, but here ends the book’s resemblance to the usual history of literature. Each date is followed by a headline evoking an event that indicates the chronological point of departure. Usually the event is literary—the publication of an original work, a journal, a translation, the first performance of a play, the death of an author—but some events are literary only in terms of their repercussions and resonances.
