Excerpt: ...boats were unable to reach the steps leading to the passenger mole, and the expression on the faces of the liverish gentlemen as a cart came out and they were given to understand that a third change was imperative was a sight calculated to move BUENOS AYRES. the gods to mirth. But all is altered now. Extensive improvements have been carried out at the port, and the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company's steamers, instead of landing passengers at La Plata, which necessitated a railway journey to the capital, now proceed to the Madero Docks at Buenos Ayres. The city itself might be termed, without much exaggeration, the Paris of the Southern Hemisphere, and in the arrangement of its streets there is, indeed, more than a passing resemblance between the two. Electric and horse tramways traverse almost all the principal thoroughfares; telephones and electric light are everywhere in evidence; the hotels are up to date; the shops are as expensive as the most exclusive person could desire; and those who are sufiiciently "wicked " may enjoy a day at the races any Sunday on the fine course at Palermo, in the suburbs. The first and longest stage of the journey across the continent is to Mendoza, which is the terminus of the through sleeping and restaurant cars of the Buenos Ayres and Pacific Railway Company. Trains leave the Retiro Station at Buenos Ayres three times a week, and, asone of our pictures proves, the accommodation provided is of a first-rate description. The dining cars are fitted with electric light and electric ventilators, and a considerate management arranges that the latest news shall be supplied by wire to passengers while en roulv. As the train leaves Buenos Ayres behind, it travels for twelve hours over level, fertile...

Book Sino British Negotiations and the Search for a Post War Settlement 1942 1949

Download or read book Sino British Negotiations and the Search for a Post War Settlement 1942 1949 written by Zhaodong Wang and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-03-21 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a systematic study of the China-Britain relationship during the 1942–1949 period with a particular focus on the two countries’ discussions over both the 1943 Sino-British treaty and the discarded Sino-British commercial treaty, the future of Hong Kong, and the political status of Tibet. These were dominated by two underlying themes: the elimination of the British imperialist position in China and the establishment of an equal and reciprocal bilateral relationship. The negotiations started promisingly in 1942–1943, but, by 1949, had failed to reach a satisfactory settlement. Behind the failure lay a complex set of domestic considerations and external factors, including the powerful infl uence of the United States. Even after seven decades, the failure still has a contemporary impact. Recent Sino-British disputes over the Hong Kong Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement and incessant Indo-Chinese confl icts and skirmishes over their unsettled borders all attest to the enduring legacy of the years 1942–1949 as setting the scene for subsequent Sino-British and Sino-Indian relations. From this perspective, the history has never left us.

Book excerpt: Steamship Nationalism is a cultural, social, and political history of the S.S. Imperator, Vaterland, and Bismarck. Transatlantic passenger steamships launched by the Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Aktien-Gesellschaft (HAPAG) between 1912 and 1914, they do not enjoy the international fame of their British counterparts, most notably the Titanic. Yet the Imperator-class liners were the largest, most luxurious passenger vessels built before the First World War. In keeping with the often-overlooked history of its merchant marine as a whole, they reveal much about Imperial Germany in its national and international dimensions. As products of business decisions shaped by global dynamics and the imperatives of international travel, immigration, and trade, HAPAG’s giant liners bear witness to Germany’s involvement in the processes of globalization prior to 1914. Yet this book focuses not on their physical, but on their cultural construction in a variety of contemporaneous media, including the press and advertising, on both sides of the Atlantic. At home, they were presented to the public as symbolic of the nation’s achievements and ambitions in ways that emphasize the complex nature of German national identity at the time. Abroad, they were often construed as floating national monuments and, as such, facilitated important encounters with Germany, both virtual and real, for the populations of Britain and America. Their overseas reception highlights the multi-faceted image of the European superpower that was constructed in the Anglo-American world in these years. More generally, it is a pointed indicator of the complex relationship between Britain, the United States, and Imperial Germany.
