Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of catalysis is found in many homogeneous and heterogeneous systems undergoing chemical change, where it effects the rates of approach to the equilibrium state in processes as diverse as those found in the stars, the earth's mantle, living organisms, and the various chemistries utilized by industry. The economies and the living standards of both developed and developing countries depend to varying degrees upon the efficacy of their chemical industries. Con sequently, this century has seen a wide exploration and expansion of catalytic chemistry together with an intensive investigation of specific, essential processes like those contributing to life-supporting agricultures. Prime among the latter must surely be the "fixation" of atmospheric nitrogen by catalytic hydrogenation to anhydrous ammonia, still the preferred synthetic precursor of the nitrogenous components of fertilizers. In each decade contemporary concepts and techniques have been used to further the understanding, as yet incomplete, of the catalyst, the adsorbates, the surface reactions, and the technology of large-scale operation. The contributors to the present volume review the state of the art, the science, and the technology; they reveal existing lacunae, and suggest ways forward. Around the turn of the century, Sabatier's school was extending the descriptive catalytic chemistry of hydrogenation by metals to include almost all types of multiple bond. The triple bond of dinitrogen, which continued to be more resistant than the somewhat similar bonds in carbon monoxide and ethyne, defied their efforts.

Book Frontiers in Organometallic Chemistry

Download or read book Frontiers in Organometallic Chemistry written by Marin A. Cato and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A black hole is a point of extreme mass in space-time with a radius, or event horizon, inside of which all electromagnetic radiation (including light) is trapped by gravity. A black hole is an extremely compact object, collapsed by gravity which has overcome electric and nuclear forces. It is believed that stars appreciably larger than the Sun, once they have exhausted all their nuclear fuel, collapse to form black holes: they are "black" because no light escapes their intense gravity. Material attracted to a black hole, though, gains enormous energy and can radiate part of it before being swallowed up. Some astronomers believe that enormously massive black holes exist in the centre of our galaxy and of other galaxies. This book brings together leading research from throughout the world.

Book Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry II Volume 14

Download or read book Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry II Volume 14 written by Edward W. Abel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-09-10 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry in 1982, studies on the chemistry of molecules with carbon-metal bonds have continued to expand rapidly. This is due to many factors, ranging from the sheer intellectual challenge and excitement provided by the continuing production of novel results, which demand new ideas, through to the successful application of organometallic species in organic syntheses, the generation of living catalysts for polymerization, and the synthesis of precursors for materials employed in the electronic and ceramic industries. These factors led to the publication of the updated Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry II. The original work serves as a basis for new volumes, focusing on organometallic chemistry reported since 1982, with reference back to the original work when necessary. For ease of use the new volumes maintain the same general structure as employed previously but reflect the changes in substance and direction the field has undergone in the last ten years. This book will serve as a pivotal reference point for new work and will function to generate new ideas and perceptions for the continued advance of what will surely continue as a vibrant area of chemistry.
