Book Barefoot in the Bindis

Download or read book Barefoot in the Bindis written by Angela Wales and published by Affirm Press. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A circle of pine trees, a sagging wire fence, and a roof that was once painted red. `There it is,? said Dad. In 1953, after doctors prescribed fresh country air for his health, Scottish-born Robert Wales uprooted his young family from the city life of Sydney and set out to establish a sheep farm in the bush. What he lacked in experience and expertise, he made up for in enthusiasm. Or so he hoped. When the family arrived on a lonely hill in northern New South Wales, they had no electricity, no running water, no telephone and no choice but to make that tangle of bush their home. From Angela Wales, eldest of the five kids, comes this extraordinarily vivid and evocative account of the next ten years as they tried to tame six thousand acres and navigate the challenges of country life. Filled with drama and hilarity, joy and back-breaking toil, Barefoot in the Bindis portrays a childhood spent in the bush, and is a sensational picture of Australia past.

Download or read book Each Wild Idea written by Geoffrey Batchen and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2002-02-22 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays on photography and the medium's history and evolving identity. In Each Wild Idea, Geoffrey Batchen explores a wide range of photographic subjects, from the timing of the medium's invention to the various implications of cyberculture. Along the way, he reflects on contemporary art photography, the role of the vernacular in photography's history, and the Australianness of Australian photography. The essays all focus on a consideration of specific photographs—from a humble combination of baby photos and bronzed booties to a masterwork by Alfred Stieglitz. Although Batchen views each photograph within the context of broader social and political forces, he also engages its own distinctive formal attributes. In short, he sees photography as something that is simultaneously material and cultural. In an effort to evoke the lived experience of history, he frequently relies on sheer description as the mode of analysis, insisting that we look right at—rather than beyond—the photograph being discussed. A constant theme throughout the book is the question of photography's past, present, and future identity.

Book Chippendale

Download or read book Chippendale written by Shirley Fitzgerald and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where William Chippendale grew potatoes in 1816 by the sweet waters of Blackwattle Creek, one of Sydney's least loved industrial inner suburbs became the home of downtrodden generations. Factories turned out sugar and shoes, beer and lollies. Floods repeatedly washed putrid mud into the unsewered slums. The new edition of this lavishly illustrated, richly diverse history carries the story of Chippendale and its characters into the 21st century.

Book Minor White

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul Martineau
  • Publisher : Getty Publications
  • Release : 2014-07-08
  • ISBN : 1606063227
  • Pages : 212 pages

Download or read book Minor White written by Paul Martineau and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controversial, misunderstood, and sometimes overlooked, Minor White (1908–1976) is one of the great photographers of the twentieth century, whose ideas exerted a powerful influence on a generation of photographers and still resonate today. His photographic career began in 1938 in Portland, Oregon, with assignments for the WPA (Works Progress Administration). After serving in World War II and studying art history at Columbia University, White’s focus shifted toward the metaphorical. He began creating images charged with symbolism and a critical aspect called equivalency, referring to the invisible spiritual energy present in a photograph made visible to the viewer. This book brings together White’s key biographical information—his evolution as a photographer, teacher of photography, and editor of Aperture, as well as particularly insightful quotations from his journals, which he kept for more than forty years. The result is an engaging narrative that weaves through the main threads of White’s life, his growth as an artist, as well as his spiritual search and ongoing struggle with his own sexuality and self-doubt. He sought comfort in a variety of religious practices that influenced his continually metamorphosing artistic philosophy. Complemented with a rich selection of more than 160 images including some never published before, the book accompanies the first major exhibition of White’s work since 1989, on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from July 8 to October 19, 2014.

  • Pages : 634 pages

Download or read book Historic Cities written by Jeff Cody and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2019-07-30 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume in the GCI's Readings in Conservation series brings together a selection of seminal writings on the conservation of historic cities. This book, the eighth in the Getty Conservation Institute’s Readings in Conservation series, fills a significant gap in the published literature on urban conservation. This topic is distinct from both heritage conservation and urban planning despite the recent growth of urbanism worldwide, no single volume has presented a comprehensive selection of these important writings until now. This anthology, profusely illustrated throughout, is organized into eight parts, covering such subjects as geographic diversity, reactions to the transformation of traditional cities, reading the historic city, the search for contextual continuities, the search for values, and the challenges of sustainability. With more than sixty-five texts, ranging from early polemics by Victor Hugo and John Ruskin to a generous selection of recent scholarship, this book thoroughly addresses regions around the globe. Each reading is introduced by short prefatory remarks explaining the rationale for its selection and the principal matters covered. The book will serve as an easy reference for administrators, professionals, teachers, and students faced with the day-to-day challenges confronting the historic city under siege by rampant development.
