Excerpt: ...through a vascular pulp, which takes up the nutritive material from the circulation, and conveys it through a small hole near the end of the quill to the interior structure. Feathers taken collectively constitute plumage, and, though they usually cover the entire body, they do not grow from every part of the skin, but are confined to certain definite tracts (pterylw), the feathers of which extend over and conceal the bare spaces (apteria). Birds renew their plumage once or twice a year, and this shedding of the old feathers is called the 'moult.' The majority of birds possess an oil-gland, situated on the rump, and from this they press out on their beaks a few drops of oil with which to dress their feathers. There are several types of structure exhibited by feathers--the typical feather (peniiacea); down (plumulacea), with a short, weak stem, and ill developed vane; and the hairy type (filoplumacea), characterized by a thin, wiry structure. This latter is really modified hair. By far the greater proportion of feathers in a bird's plumage consists of the more perfect type. These cover the body, and give shape and symmetry to the form. Developed upon the bones of the wing, are the long, stiff quill-feathers. These are termed primaries, secondaries, and tertiaries. They are situated respectively upon the parts of the wing corresponding to the hand, the fore-arm, and the upper arm. Collectively they are called the reniiges, or 'rowers.' Feathers developed from the end of the vertebral column form the bird's tail, and are as a rule long, broad and flat, though subject like the wing to considerable diversity in form. It is doubtless the most elaborate work ever produced on the Apocalypse. Editors Note, 2018 Quin. Ed. E. B Elliot finished his great work about the year 1860. The nature of the Historicist method of interpretation is such that the line of fulfilled prophecy is continually moving with the passage of time. The interpretation of which necessarily requires a certain amount of speculation which must be verified before accepted as true. As well intentioned as many are the passage of time will overthrow the best of expositors on some points of which time would reveal to be mere speculation. Though the bulk of Mr. Elliot's work still stands the test of time, time has unveiled a more likely or true interpretation on some points. The editors herein have made some updates commensurate.
