Book The Great Escape

Download or read book The Great Escape written by Angus Deaton and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-21 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Nobel Prize–winning economist tells the remarkable story of how the world has grown healthier, wealthier, but also more unequal over the past two and half centuries The world is a better place than it used to be. People are healthier, wealthier, and live longer. Yet the escapes from destitution by so many has left gaping inequalities between people and nations. In The Great Escape, Nobel Prize–winning economist Angus Deaton—one of the foremost experts on economic development and on poverty—tells the remarkable story of how, beginning 250 years ago, some parts of the world experienced sustained progress, opening up gaps and setting the stage for today's disproportionately unequal world. Deaton takes an in-depth look at the historical and ongoing patterns behind the health and wealth of nations, and addresses what needs to be done to help those left behind. Deaton describes vast innovations and wrenching setbacks: the successes of antibiotics, pest control, vaccinations, and clean water on the one hand, and disastrous famines and the HIV/AIDS epidemic on the other. He examines the United States, a nation that has prospered but is today experiencing slower growth and increasing inequality. He also considers how economic growth in India and China has improved the lives of more than a billion people. Deaton argues that international aid has been ineffective and even harmful. He suggests alternative efforts—including reforming incentives to drug companies and lifting trade restrictions—that will allow the developing world to bring about its own Great Escape. Demonstrating how changes in health and living standards have transformed our lives, The Great Escape is a powerful guide to addressing the well-being of all nations.

Book excerpt: In the beginning, when Adam disobeyed the mandate of God, he fell from the lofty heights of the heavens. He lost his keen awareness of God and ceased to operate in the higher realm of the kingdom. Adam then became prisoner to the limited realm of earth and its restrictions...but God had a plan for the redemption of man and the restoration of his dominion on the earth. God's plan for man was THE MAN, Christ Jesus. • Jesus came into the world to raise all men from the dust of circumstance into the glorious liberty of the Spirit of God. • Jesus came to open the eyes of man's understanding that all might know the hope of God's call and the riches of His inheritance in the saints. • Jesus came to free every man from the spiritual chains of fear, guilt, and condemnation. • Jesus came to free man from the demands of the law. • Jesus came to liberate man from the island of the five senses into the unbounded glory of the heavens. The revelation of Jesus and His finished work IS "The Great Escape" from every form of death and corruption.

Book excerpt: Peculiar pet shops. Troublesome dream homes. And robot vacuums that just want to be free. Looking for a captivating (and quick) escape from reality? These fifteen tales of myth, magic, and whimsy provide just that. Amongst the award-winning words are stories of vacations gone enchantingly wrong, questionable business practices, worrying parental habits, misbehaving reptiles, and Norse gods in a bit of a bind. This second short story collection by Tammie Painter (author of the humor-filled Cassie Black Trilogy and The Circus of Unusual Creatures Mysteries) begins with a brief introduction telling how these stories led to the creation of those fan favorite series. The author then launches each tale with a few words to share the twists and turns of inspiration. The fifteen stories range from beguiling magical realism to laugh-out-loud silliness to dark (but not too dark) fantasy. Some stories have a little violence (nothing gruesome) and mild cursing, but no "on-screen" hanky panky (a giant does have some off-screen fun, but I’ll leave you to discover that one). Book The Great Escape

Download or read book The Great Escape written by Saket Soni and published by Algonquin Books. This book was released on 2023-01-24 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book of 2023 Shortlisted for the 2023 Moore Prize The astonishing story of immigrants lured to the United States from India and trapped in forced labor—an "eye-opening" "must-read" told by the visionary labor leader who engineered their escape and set them on a path to citizenship (The New York Times Book Review). In late 2006, Saket Soni, a twenty-eight-year-old Indian-born community organizer, received an anonymous phone call from an Indian migrant worker in Mississippi. He was one of five hundred men trapped in squalid Gulf Coast “man camps,” surrounded by barbed wire, watched by guards, crammed into cold trailers with putrid toilets, forced to eat moldy bread and frozen rice. Recruiters had promised them good jobs and green cards. The men had scraped up $20,000 each for this “opportunity” to rebuild hurricane-wrecked oil rigs, leaving their families in impossible debt. During a series of clandestine meetings, Soni and the workers devised a bold plan. In The Great Escape, Soni traces the workers’ extraordinary escape, their march on foot to Washington, DC, and their twenty-three-day hunger strike to bring attention to their cause. Along the way, ICE agents try to deport the men, company officials work to discredit them, and politicians avert their eyes. But none of this shakes the workers’ determination to win their dignity and keep their promises to their families. Weaving a deeply personal journey with a riveting tale of twenty-first-century forced labor, Soni takes us into the lives of the immigrant workers the United States increasingly relies on to rebuild after climate disasters. The Great Escape is the gripping story of one of the largest human trafficking cases in modern American history—and the workers’ heroic journey for justice.

Book The Great Escape from Stalag Luft III

Download or read book The Great Escape from Stalag Luft III written by Tim Carroll and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true story of one of the most heroic feats of World War II...the daring prison camp breakout that inspired the classic film The Great Escape. Stalag Luft III was one of the Germans' "escape-proof" prison camps, specially built by Hermann Göring to hold Allied troops. But on March 24, 1944, in a courageous attempt by two hundred prisoners to break out through a series of tunnels, seventy-six Allied officers managed to evade capture—and create havoc behind enemy lines in the months before the Normandy Invasion. This is the incredible story of these brave men who broke free from the supposedly impenetrable barbed wire and watchtowers of Stalag Luft III—and who played an important role in Allied intelligence operations within occupied Europe. The prisoners developed an intricate espionage network, relaying details of military deployment, bombings, and raids. Some of them were involved in other daring escape attempts, including the famous Wooden Horse episode, also turned into a classic film, and the little-known Sachsenhausen breakout, engineered by five Great Escapers sent to die in the notorious concentration camp on Hitler's personal orders. Tragically, fifty of those involved in the Great Escape were murdered by the Gestapo. Others were recaptured; only a few made it all the way to freedom. This dramatic account of personal heroism is a testament to their ingenuity and achievement—a stirring tribute to the men who never gave up fighting. Includes eight pages of photographs and illustrations, excerpts from Göring's testimony during postwar investigations, and a list of the men who escaped.

Book The True Story of the Great Escape

Download or read book The True Story of the Great Escape written by Jonathan F Vance and published by Greenhill Books. This book was released on 2019-01-30 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It shows the variety and depth of the men sent into harms way during World War II, something emphasised by the population of Stalag Luft III. Most of the Allied POWs were flyers, with all the technical, tactical and planning skills that profession requires. Such men are independent thinkers, craving open air and wide-open spaces, which meant than an obsession with escape was almost inevitable' - John D GreshamBetween dusk and dawn on the night of March 24th–25th 1944, a small army of Allied soldiers crawled through tunnels in Germany in a covert operation the likes of which the Third Reich had never seen before. The prison break from Stalag Luft III in eastern Germany was the largest of its kind in the Second World War. Seventy-nine Allied soldiers and airmen made it outside the wire – but only three made it outside Nazi Germany. Fifty were executed by the Gestapo.Jonathan Vance tells the incredible story that was made famous by the 1963 film The Great Escape. The escape is a classic tale of prisoner and their wardens in a battle of wits and wills. The brilliantly conceived escape plan is overshadowed only by the colourful, daring (and sometimes very funny) crew who executed it – literally under the noses of German guards. From their first days in Stalag Luft III and the forming of bonds key to such exploits, to the tunnel building, amazing escape and eventual capture, Vance's history is a vivid, compelling look at one of the greatest 'exfiltration' missions of all time.

Book The Great Escape That Changed Africa s Future

Download or read book The Great Escape That Changed Africa s Future written by Harper, Charles R. and published by Lucas Park Books. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the dramatic clandestine escape, in June of 1961, of sixty African students from Portugal across Spain and into France. Most were Angolan intellectuals. Some were from Mozambique and others from Guinea-Bissau, the Cape Verde Islands, and São Tomé-and-Principe. Soon after the first anti-colonial armed rebellions broke out in Angola (March 1961), the student community in Portugal suffered increasing harassment by the Portuguese political police. Passports were confiscated and some arrests of suspected student leaders occurred. Many students - men and women - decided to flee Portugal illegally. It was risky business. False passports from friendly African countries had to be found, contacts set up for night border crossings into Franco's Spain, and then overland transportation to France. Some of the students, graduates of North American and British missionary schools in Africa, appealed to the World Council of Churches in Geneva to help them escape. The challenge was accepted by the French Protestant service agency CIMADE. The successful operation makes for exciting reading. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 7.9px Arial} This updated edition includes recollections of African heads of government who participated in the Great Escape.

Book The Great Escape

Download or read book The Great Escape written by Dorothea Kalra and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt:  Accurate forecast and time lead. In an investigative report after the deadly storm Katrina, blame and responsibility was placed on various agencies. At the end of the report, the United States Coast Guard and National Hurricane Center were commended for their actions. They were said to have provided accurate forecasts with accurate time leads. The aim of this book is to provide an accurate forecast and accurate time lead to what lies ahead for all of us.  Trip check. Before leaving for a vacation trip to Florida, a few years ago, I had my mechanic check out our car. When I dropped off the car, he wrote the phrase 'trip check' in his appointment book. As he penned those words, I was awakened to the profound meaning and significance of the simple phrase. I knew God was getting my attention as to the due diligence I was giving to a short trip of a few days, but how much consideration was I giving to the long journey upon my departure from the earth. This book is to provide a trip check for our final journey from earth and beyond.  Expiry date. Recently, at work, I received the following email from our IT department: "Your password is ready to expire in ten days, please reset your password." From the moment I read it, I began to see a deeper meaning and get very valuable insight in the simple but short text. Irrespective of one's belief, status, wealth, knowledge, origin or nationality, one thing is certain and true for all of us on the earth: We all have an expiry date. Ironically, on the other side, there is no expiry date. Wherever we end up, it will be forever. We cannot lean on our own ideology, belief system, character or achievements as a qualification for entry into heaven, but we must accept the password that God has provided so that we end up in the right place.
