Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunny Side Article, omitted from three previous volumes, paraded for the fourth time with such a pa thetic 'i suppose you don't want me' in its eye that it could not decently be rejected. So here they all are. One further word of explanation. You may find the first section of this book - Oranges and Lemons - a little difficult. The characters of it are old friends to that limited public which reads my books in England; their earlier adven tures have been told in those previous volumes (and purposely omitted from Happy Days as being a little too insular). I feel somehow that strangers will not be on such easy terms with them, and I would recommend that you approach them last. By that time you will have discovered whether you are in a mood to stop and listen to their chatter, or prefer to pass them by with a nod. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunny Side of the Hill If Maureen could anything be more cleverly suggestive, more artful and designing than that crafty, wily if - why, it was just the thin end of the wedge, it was jobbery, backstairs influence, and manoeuvre. In her indignation Maureen could almost have hated that dearly loved aunt. Father understood it and mother too, ' she continued in that dumb soliloquy. I am sure of it by the way father looked at me when he handed me the letter and told me that Irene and the other girls had read it. You were out, Maureen, mother added, and there was rather a troubled look in her eyes; read it carefully, dear, and tell us what you think of it. They were sure, both of them, that I was the one Aunt Margaret wanted, though she knew better than to say so. Oh! Oh! I should like to shake her.' And Maureen hurried off in search of her usual confidant, Harold, her eldest brother, who was her exact Opposite in temperament, and whose opinions and worldly wisdom were in consequence considered by her as worth their weight in gold, although she did not always agree with them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunny Side: Or, the Country Minister's Wife Then she who was to Share his labour and joy recalled him to present practical domestic arrangements. On the next day he was to be ordained - a very important event surely; but on the week following he anticipated one scarcely less important. He began to wonder if they had not made a mistake in the order of these events. Could he do full justice to his first sermon, with that event in such immediate prospect? As if to speed the time a little, he drew his whip across his pony's ears, who, feeling insulted by so smart a blow, started off at a round trot, and soon brought his driver out of the still woods into the village of Weston. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunny Side of Christianity The front door. There would probably not a great deal come out of the rear door any way, and what did come it would be difficult to tag in a way to make it intelligible to the general market. Now the Church, a Church is, or is presumably, a kind of manufactory, that is, it exists for the purpose of yielding some form of product. And it is as evi dent as it needs to be that only a few people comparatively have any simple and distinct idea what that product is. That is shown in the fact that so many, whom we should not want to charge with not being Christian, do not care to asso ciate themselves with the Church. The meaning of Church is not so clearly felt by its members and therefore is not made so apparent by its members, as to lead outsiders to care to become identified with it or be made responsible for it. We do not need to have it pointed out to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunny Side of Life: Sermons Preached in the Every-Day Church, Boston In the preparation of the following sermons, it was no part of my plan that hey should be published in book form. They were all preached to the congregation of the Every-Day Church, Boston, in the course of my regular ministry. While they were preached without manuscript, they were usually dictated for publication the following week. Sometimes the dictation was made with reasonable care, but more frequently very rapidly and with a view only to newspaper use. Amid an unusually busy and distracting ministry, I have at the suggestion of friends undertaken to gather up a few of these sermons into a volume. Now that they are published, I am bound to acknowledge that I cannot be proud of my children. Upon nearly every page, certainly in every sermon, I am confronted with visible and humiliating signs of great haste in preparation, while revision is quite out of the question. The only merit perhaps which could ever have been claimed for these sermons was an honest purpose evident in them to call men to a higher life, and a warmth of earnestness which I can only hope has not wholly disappeared in the printing. It was not found practicable to make the arrangement with reference to any proper sequence. Indeed, the arrangement has been more with reference to variety. Book On the Sunnyside of Life

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I read stories of women on ranches, I wonder if I should consider myself a ranch woman at all. I lost that life when I was twenty years old. Then I realize in my heart I have never left the ranch. It is where I will always be. If you'd ever lived a cowboy life, it will forever define who you are. Those years defined who I am from my work ethic to my love of being outdoors and alone. The spirit of the west is alive and well in me. I've worked to turn every place I've ever lived into Sunnyside. By reading the stories I've written, I'm hoping my readers will feel some connection to a life I thought was so special.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunny Side: A Book of Religious Songs for the Sunday School and the Home The feature of the book to which we desire to call especial attention, is a collection of nearly two-score German Child and Folk Songs which it contains, and which have been selected with great care from the rich mine of German song. Many of the accompany ing poems have been happily translated for us by Rev. Charles T. Brooks, who has kindly given his valuable services to our cause. We trust the sweet ness and sterling quality of these melodies will make them favorites in the Sunday-school. For the rest, we have tried to keep the tunes within the range of the children's voices, have printed the words under the music wherever possible, observed a natural order in the succession of the hymns, added two indexes for convenient reference, and thus aimed at producing a practical, helpful book in the religious nurture of the young. And so may this little work, the fruit of many hours of pleasant labor, go into many a Sunday-school and home, to inculcate a. Natural, joyous piety, and bring the cheer and blessing of song into the hearts of. Young and old. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
