James is well traveled and well read, and he makes Patricia feel things she hasn’t felt in years. Book Reinvention Of Science The Slaying The Dragons Of Dogma And Ignorance

Download or read book Reinvention Of Science The Slaying The Dragons Of Dogma And Ignorance written by Bernard J T Jones and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2023-11-02 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the history of science, different thinkers, philosophers and scientists postulated the existence of entities that, in spite of their not being visible or detectable in their time, or perhaps ever, were nevertheless useful to explain the real world. We started this book by looking at a handful of these entities. These included phlogiston to account for fire; the luminiferous ether for propagation of radiation; the homunculus to provide for heredity; and crystalline spheres to carry the wandering planets around the earth. Many of these erroneous beliefs had held up progress, just as dragons drawn on the edges of a map discouraged exploration. This pattern of science evolution continued through the centuries up to the present day.The book evolved into a more extensive history of how science evolved through controversy, suppression, and the desire to maintain the status quo. Our story passes from the Babylonians and Greeks through the middle ages, the renaissance and the scientific revolution to almost current events. We discuss the evolution of our world, the controversy about the extinction of dinosaurs, and open questions in contemporary science such as dark matter, black holes and the origin of the Universe, including how we understand the subatomic world of elementary particles. Most of the chapters deal with astronomy, cosmology and physics, but there are brief ventures into geosciences (continental drift), biosciences (the homunculus), atmospheric physics (Heaviside layer), paleontology (the extinction of dinosaurs), and computer science (artificial intelligence). The authors present a sequence of how mistakes and fallacies have been purged from our quest to understand nature. The way these changes have come about are skillfully set in their relevant historical contexts.

And a new face in Dee's dive bars and alleyways--Simon Chase, a strong, sexy shadow with a haunted past of his own. Simon knows a lot about the dark side of Dee's work. He knows even more about how to make her body spark with desire. But the hot lust shimmering between them is only the beginning. The very mention of his name in some quarters brings a shudder to those close by, and even the passing of time has failed to heel the wounds that some feel towards him and his wicked act. Throughout his time in the public eye there has been confusion as to his true name. Should he be called Thomas Temple or Temporal or was his real name Thomas Otter? Following his execution, after a well publicised trial, the body of Thomas Otter was gibbeted close to the scene of Mary Kirkham's murder where it remained swinging in the breeze for forty-four years. Thomas Otter became the last man in Lincolnshire and one of the last men in the whole of England to be gibbeted and yet the story of Tom Otter and the slaying of Mary Kirkham lives on.

Book The Slaying of a Princess

Download or read book The Slaying of a Princess written by Kelli Hankins and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-05-30 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loss. Tragedy. Devastation. Redemption. Restoration...Testimony. All of this can be found on the pages inside, but testimony is where it all ends. If our stories and the lessons we learn from them along the way are not used to encourage the hearts of others, then it is all a waste. It is sure that one or more elements of my story will be relatable for you personally in one way or the other. That is the whole point in telling it. Telling it was so very hard. I learned to find comfort with new levels of humility and vulnerability like never before, but if it touches just one heart, it will all be worth it. If my story keeps just one person from harm or provides hope for those already in a seemingly unending place of darkness, then all that I endured in getting my story out fulfills its purpose. You are not alone in your struggles. You are not alone in your pain. You are not alone in the dark places that sometimes overwhelm and leave you feeling defeated. You may not be in view of the light, but it is there, so do not lose hope. I invite you to read my story and find encouragement and support. You are valuable, you are loved, and you were created with a purpose. So press on, my dear friend. Beautiful things await you.

Book Slaying Apophis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lisa E. O. Mueller
  • Publisher : Trafford Publishing
  • Release : 2001
  • ISBN : 1552128350
  • Pages : 129 pages

Download or read book Slaying Apophis written by Lisa E. O. Mueller and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experiences which form the basis of Slaying Apophis began in May of 1992 when I separated from my husband. I spent late winter through early spring 1994 traveling the Eurasian continent. Throughout the trip, sixteen students were under the guidance of three Eastern Michigan University professors and two tour managers. Under the rigorous conditions of travel, we got to know each other quite well. The journey became primarily one of self-discovery. I found myself searching for meaning and direction. In the process, I wrestled with, and at least wounded, several of my demons. My observations were written down as I experienced or remembered them. As I was preparing for publication what had begun as a private journal, I realized that some observations and class quotes were quasi-universals, philosophical road signs. I have highlighted these throughout the text as aphorisms, and compiled them all at the end of the book. Perhaps this composite picture of an adventure of discovery, and the wisdom gained, will serve others as well as myself. As the Chinese couplet on the cover proclaims, "may you be blessed with peace and safety wherever you are."
