Download or read book Bad News written by Anjan Sundaram and published by Random House Canada. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author of the acclaimed Stringer, praised by Jon Stewart as "a remarkable book about the lives of people in the Congo," Anjan Sundaram returns to Africa for a piercing look at Rwanda, a country still caught in political and social unrest years after the genocide that shocked the world. Bad News is the story of Anjan Sundaram's time teaching a class of journalists in Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda. The current Rwandan regime, which seized power after the genocide in 1994, is often held up as a beacon of progress and is the recipient of billions of dollars each year in aid from Western governments. Underpinning this shining vision of a modern orderly state, however, is a powerful climate of fear springing from the government's brutal treatment of any voice of dissent. "You cannot look and write," a policeman tells Sundaram as he takes notes at a political rally. As Sundaram's students are exiled, imprisoned, recruited as well-paid propagandists, and even shot, he tries frantically to preserve a last bastion of debate in a country where the testimony of the individual is crushed by the ways of thinking prescribed by Paul Kagame's dictatorial regime. A vivid portrait of a country at an extraordinary and dangerous place in its history, Bad News is a brilliant and urgent parable on the necessity of freedom of expression and what happens when that freedom is seized.

Download or read book A First Course in Optimization Theory written by Rangarajan K. Sundaram and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-06-13 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1996, introduces students to optimization theory and its use in economics and allied disciplines. The first of its three parts examines the existence of solutions to optimization problems in Rn, and how these solutions may be identified. The second part explores how solutions to optimization problems change with changes in the underlying parameters, and the last part provides an extensive description of the fundamental principles of finite- and infinite-horizon dynamic programming. Each chapter contains a number of detailed examples explaining both the theory and its applications for first-year master's and graduate students. 'Cookbook' procedures are accompanied by a discussion of when such methods are guaranteed to be successful, and, equally importantly, when they could fail. Each result in the main body of the text is also accompanied by a complete proof. A preliminary chapter and three appendices are designed to keep the book mathematically self-contained.
Download or read book Pirate Modernity written by Ravi Sundaram and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-07-30 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using Delhi’s contemporary history as a site for reflection, Pirate Modernity moves from a detailed discussion of the technocratic design of the city by US planners in the 1950s, to the massive expansions after 1977, culminating in the urban crisis of the 1990s. As a practice, pirate modernity is an illicit form of urban globalization. Poorer urban populations increasingly inhabit non-legal spheres: unauthorized neighborhoods, squatter camps and bypass legal technological infrastructures (media, electricity). This pirate culture produces a significant enabling resource for subaltern populations unable to enter the legal city. Equally, this is an unstable world, bringing subaltern populations into the harsh glare of permanent technological visibility, and attacks by urban elites, courts and visceral media industries. The book examines contemporary Delhi from some of these sites: the unmaking of the citys modernist planning design, new technological urban networks that bypass states and corporations, and the tragic experience of the road accident terrifyingly enhanced by technological culture. Pirate Modernity moves between past and present, along with debates in Asia, Africa and Latin America on urbanism, media culture, and everyday life. This pioneering book suggests cities have to be revisited afresh after proliferating media culture. Pirate Modernity boldly draws from urban and cultural theory to open a new agenda for a world after media urbanism.

Download or read book Hanuman s Tale written by Philip Lutgendorf and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-11 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hanuman, the devoted monkey helper of Rama and Sita, has long been recognized as a popular character in India's ancient Ramayana epic. But more recently he has also become one of the most beloved and worshiped gods in the Hindu pantheon - enshrined in majestic new temples, but equally present in poster art, advertising, and mass media. Drawing on Sanskrit and vernacular texts, classical iconography and modern TV serials, and extensive fieldwork and interviews, Philip Lutgendorf challenges the academic cliché of Hanuman as a "minor" or "folk" deity by exploring his complex and growing role in South Asian religion and culture. This wide-ranging study examines the historical evolution of Hanuman's worship, his close association with Shiva and goddesses, his invocation in tantric ritual, his physical immortality and enduring presence in sacred sites, and his appeal to devotees who include scholars, wrestlers, healers, politicians, and middle-class urbanites. Lutgendorf also offers a rich array of entertaining stories not previously available in English: an expanding epic cycle that he christens the "Hanumayana." Arguing that Hanuman's role as cosmic "middle man" is intimately linked to his embodiment in a charming and provocative simian form, Lutgendorf moves beyond the Indian subcontinent to interrogate the wider human fascination with anthropoid primates as boundary beings and as potent signifiers of both Self and Other.

Download or read book Vivan Sundaram is Not a Photographer written by Ruth Rosengarten and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this book, Ruth Rosengarten considers the expanded field of the 'photographic' in the work of Indian artist Vivan Sundaram, beginning with the notion that Sundaram is not a photographer in any traditional sense of the term. Discussing the ontological shift that photography has undergone in the age of digital production, Rosengarten considers 'photograpy' as more a practice than a medium. Exploring the uses of the historial artistic methods of assemblage, bricolage and the assisted readymade, she throws light on Sundaram's individual uses, and subversions, of documentary photography. In each chapter, a single or two bodies of work are analysed, positioning Sundaram in relation to various propositions in which the relationship between photography and politics is probed. Often site-specific and always entailing the collaboration of numerous other practitioners, Sundaram's work lays bare the limitations of individual studio practice and single authoriship. The works, Rosengarten argues, invite us to consider and immerse ourselves materially in the ethical claims of photography, raising question about archivalism in art practice, and throwing light on Sundaram's locational commitment as a citizen artist."--Cover flap.

Book excerpt: It has been the authors' experience that the overwhelming majority of students in MBA derivatives courses go on to careers where a deep conceptual, rather than solely mathematical, understanding of products and models is required. The first edition of Derivatives looks to create precisely such a blended approach, one that is formal and rigorous, yet intuitive and accessible. The main body of this book is divided into six parts. Parts 1-3 cover, respectively, futures and forwards; options; and swaps. Part 4 examines term-structure modeling and the pricing of interest-rate derivatives, while Part 5 is concerned with credit derivatives and the modeling of credit risk. Part 6 discusses computational issues.

Book excerpt: "Transcendent beauty rises above physical limitations and endures the passage of time."--Hema Sundaram, M.D. Have you ever considered why some cosmetic procedures carry no stigma at all, but procedures that relate to aging do? If it is not "wrong" for a 14-year-old to straighten her teeth orthodontically, why is it "wrong" for a 40-year-old to have laser surgery to remove her wrinkles? In Face Value, Hema Sundaram, M.D. shows you how to make your own choices when it comes to beauty. She examines our culture's conflicted messages about beauty, from ancient myths to modern tabloids, and she reveals how women get caught in false dichotomies such as "natural versus artificial beauty" and "inner versus outer beauty." Dr. Sundaram's authoritative guide to ageless beauty teaches you how to harmonize your inner and outer beauty. Her integrative regimen includes: * Suggested lifestyle changes that can slow your rate of aging * Advice on how to vanquish the seven negative emotions that age you, and replace them with the principles of transcendent beauty * An up-to-date prescription for at-home skin rejuvenation, including a 7-Minute Amazing Skin Regimen that fits into even the busiest schedule * Must-have information on the newest cosmetic surgery technologies and strategies for successful surgery, including how to know when you're ready for cosmetic surgery, how to choose the best surgeon and how to avoid cosmetic surgery disasters * Meditations to develop and project your inner, spiritual beauty * A results-oriented plan for harnessing your personal "Power Points," to overcome the ten ways your face ages Along the way, you'll read the inspiring real-life stories of Dr. Sundaram's patients, women who've experienced the liberation of finding their true Face Value.
Download or read book Text and Tradition in South India written by Velcheru Narayana Rao and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Velcheru Narayana Rao's contribution to understanding Indian cultural history, literary production, and intellectual life—specifically from the vantage of the Andhra region—has few parallels. He is one of the very rare scholars to be able to reflect magisterially on the precolonial and colonial periods. He moves easily between Sanskrit and the vernacular traditions, and between the worlds of orality and script. This is because of his mastery of the "classical" Telugu tradition. As Sanjay Subrahmanyam puts it in his Introduction, "To command nearly a thousand years of a literary tradition is no small feat, but more important still is VNR's ability constantly to offer fresh readings and provocative frameworks for interpretation." The essays and reflections in Text and Tradition in South India bring together the diverse and foundational contributions made by Narayana Rao to the rewriting of India's cultural and literary history. The book is for anyone interested in the history of Indian ideas, the social and cultural history of South India, and the massive intellectual traditions of the subcontinent.

Download or read book Sundaram Ether Theory of Gravitation and Electromagnetism written by B RAJASEKAR and published by Noveltronics. This book was released on 2022-04-01 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The entire Universe is structured by two entities named Sundaram and Ether. They are the cause behind Gravitation and Electromagnetism. This Sundaram + Ether theory provides a complete non-abstract explanation for gravitation and electromagnetism The careful analysis of the unusual observations of the Apollo missions shows that all Earth-based objects have ten times expanded size while on the moon. The astronauts had 60 foot height while on the Moon. The dimensions of objects increase when moving away from the Earth and decrease when moving towards the Earth in proportion to the radial distance from the Earth. None of the existing theories in physics predict this phenomenon. There is no such thought reflected even in literature. Newton’s theory of gravitation, based on empirical data of the planetary motions, views gravity as a force only. The change of dimension of objects due to change of gravity shows that the gravitation is more than a force. Therefore, to understand the dimensional change of objects we need to know the cause of gravitation. As none of the existing gravitational theories predict the dimensional change of objects, all these theories including Theory of Relativity are redundant. Sundaram + Ether theory explains and proves the dimensional change that happens in the entire solar system. A paradigm shift in physical theories is inevitable...
