Book excerpt: This book tells the story of a collection of paintings that belonged to the earls of Suffolk and Berkshire prior to being gifted to the nation in 1974. The paintings date from the late 16th century to the late 19th century and are made up of family portraits, royal portraits and old masters. The collection contains significant, early, full-length English portraits which depict a fascinating family history in the Jacobean times and key personalities of that period. This lavishly illustrated book includes full catalogue entries for all the items in the collection. It explores the Suffolk Collection from a number of points of view - with contributions from leading specialists in their field - and reassesses the identities of the sitters, considers the artists, their context, the society and family history at the different times, as well as discussing in detail the costume represented and the physical condition of the paintings. Together, the chapters provide a fascinating insight into the collection and its history.

This book was released on 2007-10-11 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responsibility for household refuse collection and disposal belongs to around 400 local authorities in England and the historical development of such a disparate system means practice varies widely on timing and frequency and the types of materials collected and recycled. EU landfill restrictions, designed to combat climate change, have driven a shift towards greater recycling as councils seek to avoid paying substantial fines. The Committee's report examines the range of collection methods used and how these can help reduce the amount of municipal waste sent to landfill, financing aspects of refuse collection, waste planning, financial incentive schemes and the 'polluter pays' principle. The report finds that there is no single waste collection system suitable for all local authorities across England, given the range of local circumstances, but the challenges posed do require a national response driven by a clear vision energetically communicated from central government. This includes the need: for best practice guidance on information provision to householders on collection methods (particularly alternative weekly collections); to promote greater awareness in households of the need for food waste reduction; and to prioritise performance improvement in waste management within the Government's new local government performance framework. Other recommendations include the need for further research into the public health impacts of alternate weekly collections in order to satisfy public concerns over the increased risk of vermin and pests; and for wider application of the colour-coded recycling system developed by WRAP (the Waste and Resources Act Programme) to help reduce the differences in recycling practice across local authority boundaries. The Committee supports the ability of councils to form joint authorities but raises concerns over the Government's current plans for financial incentive schemes for recycling. It also recommends that, given the majority of waste is produced by commercial, industrial and construction industries, the programme of affordable recycling services for businesses is needed, especially for SMEs.

Book Kenwood Paintings in the Iveagh Bequest

Download or read book Kenwood Paintings in the Iveagh Bequest written by Julius Bryant and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set high on a ridge in historic parkland less than five miles from Trafalgar Square, Kenwood is London's favourite 'country house'. Remodelled by Robert Adam in the eighteenth century, in 1928 it became the home of the Iveagh Bequest, a superb collection of old master paintings that includes Rembrandt's most celebrated self-portrait, the only Vermeer in England outside the National Gallery and the Royal Collection, Gainsborough's Countess Howe, and classic works by Reynolds, Romney, Lawrence and Turner. The collection was formed between 1887 and 1891 by Edward Cecil Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh, Chairman of the world's leading brewery, who gave it to the nation with the house and estate. This book is published to mark the seventy-fifth anniversary of the opening of the Iveagh Bequest and is the first new catalogue of the collection to be produced in fifty years. It discusses each work, revealing the personalities behind the faces in the portraits, the social circumstances of each commission, and the way that art met the ambitions of artists, patrons, sitters and collectors. There are also two introductory essays that provide context for the house and discuss the ways in which Lord Iveagh was a pioneer collector. Beautifully produced, this catalogue of paintings is the essential book on Kenwood.

Wilson Roy Strong is best known as the flamboyant former director of two great cultural institutions - the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum. In his first volume of diaries, he takes the reader into the heart of his career, revealing himself to be not just a mercurial and brilliant administrator, but also a shrewd observer of the glittering and political milieu into which he was drawn. We encounter David Hockney in his studio, the poignant figure of Cecil Beaton in decline, Nureyev fizzing with ideas and the Philistine Mrs Thatcher among many others, including a bevy of the Royal Family. And throughout the diaries runs the thread of an exceptional marriage, following his elopement with the designer Julia Trevelyan Oman. Splendours and Miseries provides a unique panorama of the world of the arts, fashion and society, taking us from the outrageous Swinging Sixties to the hard-edged glitz of Thatcher's Britain.

Book Victorian Songhunters

    Book Details:
  • Author : E. David Gregory
  • Publisher : Scarecrow Press
  • Release : 2006-04-13
  • ISBN : 1461674174
  • Pages : 458 pages

Download or read book Victorian Songhunters written by E. David Gregory and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2006-04-13 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victorian Songhunters is a pioneering history of the rediscovery of vernacular song—street songs that have entered oral tradition and have been passed from generation to generation—in England during the late Georgian and Victorian eras. In the nineteenth century there were four main types of vernacular song: ballads, folk lyrics, occupational songs, and national songs. The discovery, collecting, editing, and publishing of all four varieties are examined in the book, and over seventy-five selected examples are given for illustrative purposes. Key concepts, such as traditional balladry, broadside balladry, folksong, and national song, are analyzed, as well as the complicated relationship between print and oral tradition and the different methodological approaches to ballad and song editing. Organized chronologically, Victorian Songhunters sketches the history of English song collecting from its beginnings in the mid-seventeenth century; focuses on the work of important individual collectors and editors, such as William Chappell, Francis J. Child, and John Broadwood; examines the growth of regional collecting in various counties throughout England; and demonstrates the considerable efforts of two important Victorian institutions, the Percy Society and its successor, the Ballad Society. The appendixes contain discussions on interpreting songs, an assessment of relevant secondary sources, and a bibliography and alphabetical song list. Author E. David Gregory provides a solid foundation for the scholarly study of balladry and folksong, and makes a significant contribution to our understanding of Victorian intellectual and cultural life.
