Download or read book The Study of the Interaction of Intense Picosecond Light Pulses with Materials written by Chi Hsing Lee and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report contains the summary of the works performed in the entire period of this grant. The two-photon and three-photon photoconductivity effects in various semiconductors were studied. The effect was then applied to measure the ultrashort optical pulses. Two-photon pump GaAs bulk laser action was demonstrated. A theoretical calculation on the optical third harmonic generation with broad band picosecond pulses was made. Finally various aspects of the nonlinear optical interaction at the boundary of nonlinear media were investigated. The data agreed well with Bloembergen and Pershan's theory. The observation of the nonlinear Brewster's angle was reported for the first time in a transparent medium. (Author).

Book The Study of the Interaction of Intense Picosecond Light Pulse with Materials A Theory of Third Harmonic Generation in an Isotropic Nonlinear Medium with Ultrashort Light Pulses

Download or read book The Study of the Interaction of Intense Picosecond Light Pulse with Materials A Theory of Third Harmonic Generation in an Isotropic Nonlinear Medium with Ultrashort Light Pulses written by Chi H. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report contains the development of a theory for third harmonic generation (THG) due to a broad band optical pulses such as existing in the picosecond time region. The theory is than applied to several examples. Specifically, Maxwell's equations are used as the starting point and a wave equation for the THG is developed for a uniform plane wave in a dielectric, isotropic medium. The material parameters considered are the nonlinear susceptibility giving rise to the third harmonic, the respective phase and group velocities, and the interaction length. Three examples consisting of a sine wave, a Gaussian pulse and a linearly chirped pulse are evaluated. (Author).

Lee and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-photon conductivity effect in GaAs has been used to map the second order intensity correlation function of the picosecond laser pulse for the first time. Reproducible data were obtained. The contrast ratio is about 1.8. This is limited by the thickness of the sample. In principle this method can be extended to use very thin sample to obtained subpicosecond time resolution. Three photon induced photoconductivity effect has been observed in CdS polycrystalline sample with a mode-locked Nd:glass laser. The three photo absorption coefficient was measured to be 0.043 cc/G(W sq). (Author).

Book excerpt: The photoconductivity in CdS single and polycrystals was investigated by using mode-locked Nd:glass laser pulses for excitation and was found to exhibit a power law I to the 3.0 plus or minus 0.2 power, where I is the peak excitation intensity. The three-photon absorption coefficient estimated from the photoconductivity measurement agreed well within an order of magnitude with the theoretical values. (Author).

Book The Study of the Interaction of Intense Picosecond Light Pulse with Materials Investigation of Two Photon Conductivity in Gallium Arsenide Using a Nd Glass Laser

Download or read book The Study of the Interaction of Intense Picosecond Light Pulse with Materials Investigation of Two Photon Conductivity in Gallium Arsenide Using a Nd Glass Laser written by Subramana Jayaraman and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes studies of photoconductivity in single crystal GaAs via two-photon absorption of light quanta from either a Q-switched or mode-locked Nd: glass laser. The results obtained with nanosecond light pulses are compared with those obtained with picosecond case. In the latter case, the transient response of the induced charge carrier accounts for the observed effects. (Author).

Book The Study of the Interaction of Intense Picosecond Light Pulse with Materials Multi photon Conductivity in Semiconductors and Measurement of Picosecond Pulse Width

Download or read book The Study of the Interaction of Intense Picosecond Light Pulse with Materials Multi photon Conductivity in Semiconductors and Measurement of Picosecond Pulse Width written by Chi H. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two-photon conductivity in GaAs and CdS(0.5) - Se(0.5) and the three-photon conductivity in CdS were investigated with the use of Mode-locked Nd:glass laser as the exciting source. The square law dependence of the two-photon conducitivity and the cubic law dependence of the three-photon conducitivity on the excitation intensity were subsequently used to measure the autocorrelation of the intensity in second and third order of the picosecond pulses from the mode-locked Nd:glass laser. The absorption coefficients estimated from the photoconductivity measurement were found to agree in order of magnitude with the theoretically calculated values from time dependent perturbation theory and the band structure of the semiconductor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon after the invention of the laser, a brand-new area of endeavour emerged after the discovery that powerful ultrashort (picosecond) light pulses could be extracted from some lasers. Chemists, physicists, and engineers quickly recognized that such pulses would allow direct temporal studies of extremely rapid phenomena requiring, however, development of revolutionary ultrafast optical and electronic devices. For basic research the development of picosecond pulses was highly important because experimentalists were now able to measure directly the motions of atoms and molecules in liquids and solids: by disrupting a material from equilibrium with an intense picosecond pulse and then recording the time of return to the equilibrium state by picosecond techniques. Studies of picosecond laser pulses-their generation and diagnostic tech niques-are still undergoing a fairly rapid expansion, but a critical review of the state of the art by experienced workers in the field may be a timely help to new experimentalists. We shall review the sophisticated tools developed in the last ten years, including the modelocked picosecond-pulse-emitting lasers, the picosecond detection techniques, and picosecond devices. Moreover, we shall outline the basic foundations for the study of rapid events in chemistry and physics, which have emerged after many interesting experiments and which are now being applied in biology. An in-depth coverage of various aspects of the picosecond field should be helpful to scientists and engineers alike.

Book The Study of the Interaction of Intense Picosecond Light Pulse with Materials Berg Barrett X Ray Observation of Annealing and Laser Induced Damage in Zinc

Download or read book The Study of the Interaction of Intense Picosecond Light Pulse with Materials Berg Barrett X Ray Observation of Annealing and Laser Induced Damage in Zinc written by Chi H. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Berg-Barrett x-ray diffraction contrast technique has been utilized to study the process of laser induced damage in a zinc crystal and, also to make observations on the annealing characteristics of the dislocation substructure before and after the laser treatment. Annealing caused individual dislocations to become segmented with various sections of their line lengths becoming parallel to 1010. This preference for a crystallographic orientation of the dislocations seemed related to the equally important observation that the subboundary 'lineage' structure of the crystals was also largely composed of tilt boundaries of (1010) and (1120) surfaces. The laser induced damage required a threshold energy which caused melting, possible vaporization and appreciable plastic deformation of the matrix material by deformation winning, non-basal slip and micro-kinking. By comparison with the structural rearrangement observed in the pre-annealed specimen, the laser damage zone showed only very retarded changes. (Author).
