Download or read book The Study of History in Holland and Belgium Classic Reprint written by Paul Fredericq and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of History in Holland and Belgium In June, 1885, Leyden celebrated the twenty-fifth anni versary of the installation of Prof. Robert Fruin, the most learned and most just of Dutch historians. His colleagues, Old students and admirers from Holland, Belgium and the Dutch Indies, attempted to express in an informal ovation their high esteem and lively appreciation of the veteran. Finding myself at Leyden to attend the simple and touching ceremony, I made use of my stay in Holland to investigate the teaching of history there. The notes which follow, therefore, date back more than three years but they have been brought down to the present moment, and I have completed them by investigations made in more recent visits. Book History of Holland Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Holland Classic Reprint written by George Edmundson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Holland The series is intended for the use of all persons anxious to understand the nature of existing political conditions. The roots of the present lie deep in the past and the real significance of contemporary events cannot be grasped unless the historical causes which have led to them are known. The plan adopted makes it possible to treat the history of the last four centuries in considerable detail, and to embody the most important results of modern research. It is hoped therefore that the series will be useful not only to beginners but to students who have already acquired some general knowledge of European History. For those who wish to carry their studies further, the bibliography appended to each volume will act as a guide to original sources of information and works of a more special character. Book History of the People of the Netherlands Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the People of the Netherlands Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Petrus Johannes Blok and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the People of the Netherlands, Vol. 1 The fusion of the Netherlands into one kingdom seemed accomplished. Flanders became the name of this new state in the languages of Europe, replacing the old collective name of Low Countries or Netherlands. Venetian ambassadors and Florentine and Spanish writers speak of Flemish national character, customs, commer cial interests, and government. Brussels was to be the seat of the central administration, as formerly of the bril liant Burgundian court. But in reality, matters did not progress so far. The so-called provinces of the new state still looked upon themselves as independent parts. The Fleming, the inhabitant of old Flanders, felt himself still different from the inhabitant of Brabant, Hainaut, or Guelders, from the Hollander or Frisian. Jealous of their ancient rights, proud of their former independence, separated from one another by countless commercial, political, and ethnological barriers, the citizens of the various provinces were not yet minded to submit without Opposition to the plans of the foreign government for their union. Download or read book The Fall of the Dutch Republic Classic Reprint written by Hendrik Willem Van Loon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fall of the Dutch Republic As to most students, their stream of knowledge about Dutch history starts fresh and bright among the heroic deeds of the sixteenth century, follows a less impetuous course during the seventeenth, and runs itself to death among the dry sands of the eighteenth. They are aware of the undeniable fact that at the present moment there exists a Kingdom of the Netherlands. But what lies between the days of William III (of Macaulay fame) and the foundation of the modern kingdom, is a subject of quite as much speculation as the mediaeval history of Greece or China. It has been my intention to supply the missing link for the benefit of American readers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
