Book Discovery of Single Top Quark Production

Download or read book Discovery of Single Top Quark Production written by Dag Gillberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-22 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The top quark is by far the heaviest known fundamental particle with a mass nearing that of a gold atom. Because of this strikingly high mass, the top quark has several unique properties and might play an important role in electroweak symmetry breaking—the mechanism that gives all elementary particles mass. Creating top quarks requires access to very high energy collisions, and at present only the Tevatron collider at Fermilab is capable of reaching these energies. Until now, top quarks have only been observed produced in pairs via the strong interaction. At hadron colliders, it should also be possible to produce single top quarks via the electroweak interaction. Studies of single top quark production provide opportunities to measure the top quark spin, how top quarks mix with other quarks, and to look for new physics beyond the standard model. Because of these interesting properties, scientists have been looking for single top quarks for more than 15 years. This thesis presents the first discovery of single top quark production. It documents one of the flagship measurements of the D0 experiment, a collaboration of more than 600 physicists from around the world. It describes first observation of a physical process known as “single top quark production”, which had been sought for more than 10 years before its eventual discovery in 2009. Further, his thesis describes, in detail, the innovative approach Dr. Gillberg took to this analysis. Through the use of Boosted Decision Trees, a machine-learning technique, he observed the tiny single top signal within an otherwise overwhelming background. This Doctoral Thesis has been accepted by Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, BC, Canada.

Book Study of Heavy Quark Production with the Mark II at PEP

Download or read book Study of Heavy Quark Production with the Mark II at PEP written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The methods adopted by the Mark II collaboration to study heavy quark production at PEP are described. Two complementary techniques are used: D* tagging using the decay chain D*. D°.pi., D° .-->. K−.pi.+, and inclusive lepton tagging using the characteristic p/sub T/ distributions to distinguish contributions from b and c quarks. These techniques are used to derive information about heavy quark fragmentation and about the weak coupling of heavy quarks.

Book Heavy Quark Production at the SSC

Download or read book Heavy Quark Production at the SSC written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production of a fourth generation of quarks at the SSC is studied. We emphasize the properties of the events which are relevant for detector design. Quarks up to masses of 1 TeV should be observable via their two lepton decay modes without placing stringent demands on the detector. 12 refs., 23 figs.

Book Calorimetry in ZEUS

Download or read book Calorimetry in ZEUS written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The storage ring facility HERA, under construction at the DESY Laboratory, will collide 30 GeV e/sup /minus// with 820 GeV protons when the machine is first turned on in 1990. Four interaction regions being provided. Subsequently either e/sup /minus// or e beams can be used and a facility for producing longitudinal polarization of the electrons at the interaction points will be provided. Both the center-of-mass energy (s = 314 GeV) and the momentum transfer (Q/sub max/S (approximately) 10V GeVS) are substantially higher than in any deep inelastic scattering studies to date. The HERA program will be the natural extension of both the neutrino and the muon scattering experiments done at CERN and Fermilab. With the design luminosity of 1.5 10T cm/sup /minus/2/ sec/sup /minus/1/ experiments with 200 pb/sup /minus/1/ of integrated luminosity will be possible. HERA will be the first electron-quark collider. The energy is substantially higher than LEP, and the events will be cleaner than those resulting from p/bar p/ collisions. It provides the third leg that will support the physics stool of the 1990s. In neutral current events, the z exchange graph is comparable in strength to the photon exchange and the charged current events will provide unique insights into the W coupling. There will be substantial rates of heavy quark production. Two detectors are under construction: H1 uses a large solenoid with a liquid argon calorimeter inside the coil, ZEUS uses a smaller magnet with uranium-scintillator calorimeters outside of the coil. 4 refs., 11 figs.

Book Heavy Quark Production in Ep Collisions at HERA None

Download or read book Heavy Quark Production in Ep Collisions at HERA None written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are substantial production rates of heavy quarks from ep collisions at HERA. The center of mass energy of about 300 GeV is well above any b-quark threshold effects, and for b/bar b/ production, the cross section is estimated to be 3.3 nb per event, leading to rates approaching 106 b mesons per year. The rates for c/bar c/ production are about two orders of magnitude greater. Two major detectors are under construction and a program of heavy quark physics will start in 1990. 3 refs., 4 figs.
