Book excerpt: This revised and updated edition of Black Women in the Academy adds updated data on the status of Black faculty women, a forty-four-page bibliography, and a new chapter on the status of international faculty women from twenty different countries, to the only study of the decisions of African-American women to remain in, return to, or voluntarily leave the academy. Sheila Gregory creates a conceptual framework from economic, psychosocial, and job satisfaction theories to construct a model to explain the factors that affect the decision patterns influencing career mobility. She uses a survey of the members of the Association of Black Women in Higher Education to illustrate to what degree the designated variables predict decision patterns. Gregory's analysis focuses on the women who remained in the academy, noting that those who did remain were usually successful high-achievers who managed to overcome numerous obstacles involving career and family. The author also provides an outline detailing how to attract and retain talented Black women scholars, along with possible interventions that might help interinstitutional mobility.

This book presents the stories, and the reflections on their paths to leadership in higher education, of seven African American women. Each has been the first woman, first African American, or first African American woman in one or more of the positions of authority that she has held. Each has overcome the double bind of sexism and racism that can inhibit the professional attainment of African American women. Although they followed different paths to leadership, similarities in their experiences, values, and beliefs emerge. They also express a need to give back to those communities that nourished their growth and leadership – of which this book is a manifestation. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological research study was to explore the perceived obstacles and advantages for career advancement that have guided African American women in administrative positions of leadership in K-12 education in the state of Arkansas. Through the use of a phenomenological design, a thick, rich description of the experiences of these female leaders in K-12 education was obtained. Data collection consisted of face-to-face interviews as well as a researcher's field journal, and observations to document the lived experiences of African American women who were either in administrative positions of educational leadership or in pursuit of administrative levels of roles in K-12 education. The results of the study include five key themes- spiritual awareness, communication, preparedness, networking, and vision, that helped to identify successes, barriers, and obstacles in career advancement of these African American women. The results of this study provide practitioners with ideas regarding how to capitalize on barriers and successes in order to increase the number of African American women in leadership positions in K-12 settings. Overall, the study heightens awareness of this phenomenon from the personal accounts of those who were in those positions and their thoughts and perceptions of ways to improve the current situation and career advancement options.

Perkins’s study ranges across educational and geographical settings to tell the stories of Black women and girls as students, professors, and administrators. Beginning with early efforts and the establishment of abolitionist colleges, Perkins follows the history of Black women's post–Civil War experiences at elite white schools and public universities in northern and midwestern states.
