Book The Plain Story of American History Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Plain Story of American History Classic Reprint written by John Spencer Bassett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plain Story of American History MY purpose in writing this book is expressed in the title. I wish that it may be a plain story of the achievement of human beings in that part of the Western Hemisphere which is now the United States of America. To relate the main facts clearly and broadly, rather than to describe many detailed occurrences, has been constantly in my mind. The story here presented may be taken as an introduc tion for a wider study of our history. It has been my aim to use simple but strong language, and to place the emphasis of the book on human actions. But much attention has been given to social history, and in two chapters the outlines of American government have been presented. I hope the book will prove neither hard nor easy for pupils. If it is received as a straightforward story, drawing forth the earnest efforts of capable pupils and making for the suc cess of faithful teachers, it will be a source of pleasure for the author, repaying him for many days and nights of careful study of our national history. More especially, I wish that the book may serve, along with many other excellent works of similar scope, to give to the American youth a better appreciation of the glorious history of their native land, and to create in them a warmer purpose to serve their country and promote its progress. Book An American History Classic Reprint

Download or read book An American History Classic Reprint written by Eleanor E. Riggs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American History The history of the United States is unique in that it relates definitely to the growth of the American nation, and to the ability of this people to subdue and control the forces of natural environment. It is not a chronicle of the political and military development of a country. For this reason, it has been necessary to note specifically in this text the forces that have brought into existence this new nation. These forces are: First, the many nationalities that have helped to form this composite people; second, the European influences that have molded a tolerant and liberal-minded state; and third, the adjustment of old world civilization upon new-world environment. To this end, we find that the study of American history must include: First, the land itself; second, the relation of the European background to American history; third, the adjustment of ideals of religion, government, education, and industry to a primitive country; and fourth, the rela tions of this country in international questions. Book Stories of Later American History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories of Later American History Classic Reprint written by Wilbur Fisk Gordy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Later American History This book, like Stories of Early American History, follows somewhat closely the course of study prepared by the Committee of Eight, the present volume covering the topics outlined for Grade V, while the earlier one includes the material suggested for Grade IV. It was the plan of that committee to take up in these grades, largely in a biographical way, a great part Of the essential facts Of American history; and with this plan the author, who was a member of that committee, was in hearty accord. This method, it is believed, serves a double purpose. In the first place, it is the best possible way Of laying the foundation for the later and more detailed study Of United States history in the higher grammar grades by those pupils who are to continue in school; and in the second, it gives to that large number Of pupils who will leave school before the end of the Sixth grade - which is at least half Of all the boys and girls in the schools of the country - some acquaintance with the leading men and prominent events of American history. It is without doubt a great mistake to allow half of the pupils to go out from our public schools with almost no knowledge of the moral and material forces which have made this nation what it is to-day. It is an injustice to the young people themselves; it is also an injury to their country, the vigor of whose life will depend much upon their intelligent and patriotic support. Book excerpt: Excerpt from List of Works for the Study of Hispanic-American History Spanish and local, and based upon them, there has appeared a long list of scholarly publications, marked by rigorous method and sound judgment. In the United States there has been a steadily increasing interest in Hispanic - American history since 1898 and the last five years in particular have witnessed an extraordinary development in teaching and investigation in the field. The first desideratum of the serious stu dent in any subject is some sort of biblio graphical guide. NO one has undertaken work in the field of Hispanic - American history without feeling the handicap which the lack of such a guide imposes upon him, for it has been necessary for each investi gator to build up, from the beginning, his bibliographical apparatus. It is to meet this need, to provide, if not a complete bibliography, at least a list which may serve as a basis for an eventual definitive work, that the present work has been com piled. Book The First Book in United States History Classic Reprint

Download or read book The First Book in United States History Classic Reprint written by Waddy Thompson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Book in United States History The value of biography in teaching history to young pupils is well recognized. The personal, or human, element that this form of narration adds to the text arouses the interest that is essential to the study of history. Care should be taken, however, not to overemphasize biography lest the relative importance of the in dividual and the event be misunderstood and lest the historical connection between events be lost. The biographies furnished in' this text are abundant, and they have been selected because, taken together, they cover nearly all the events of the history of our country that the young pupil need know. Wherever biography is not available, or wherever it is advisable to emphasize the event rather than the individual or to preserve a closer connection between events, the author has resorted to the ordinary form of narration. In preparing the text he has used portions of his earlier work, A Primary History of the United States. When undertaken properly the study of history is not only very useful, but is a source of delight. If the pupil, in taking up the study for the first time, can see in it the wonderful story of people who have gone before him and builded that he might live the better, he will acquire a liking for history that will abide with him in after years. To give to the young people of America not only the advantages, but the pleasure, that may be found in the study of the history of their country is the purpose of the author. With the hope that his purpose will be fulfilled, this little book is sent forth on its mission. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beauties of American History There are many passages in the History of the United States which are peculiarly fitted to inspire in the young mind the love of country, and the admiration of what is great, heroic, and noble, in the human character; and to elevate the standard of public virtue in the juvenile breast. It has been the purpose of the author of this volume to select some of the most striking of these historical beauties, and to present them in an attractive form to the young. He has deemed it unnecessary to pay much attention to chronological order; because the history of our country is judiciously made a branch of study in the common schools; so that almost every young person is qualified to refer every event to its proper date. The moral and patriotic features of each delineation have been regarded as most attractive. The love of country and the love of virtue have been considered the most important objects in view. The youth of America have noble examples before them. May they never forget that they are the countrymen of Washington, and of -. There is a long list of worthies; but that name is enough.
