Some of them, like those, for instance, on Correggio, were written two or three years before they were printed. These particularly I cannot present in the more pretentious form of a book without a word of apology. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Italian Renaissance in Art: A Study in AppreciationGreat art is more than sensuous impressions on delicate nerve and mysterious brain. Lines may whirl and pause and stiffen; light may play hide and seek with shadow; color may mount into the brilliance of the rainbow or die away into the soft grays of twi light; but the creator of these, if he is a great soul, has ever been unwilling to rest with such achieve ment. With form and color, or tones, or words, he wills to build, out of what is, that which was and ever shall be. Thru that which changes and perishes, he reveals the imperishable. To find this spirit and such men in the Italian Renaissance, to explain their presence, and interpret their work at its best, is the purpose of the following chapters.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Study and Criticism of Italian Art Second Series

Download or read book The Study and Criticism of Italian Art Second Series written by Bernard Berenson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study and Criticism of Italian Art Second Series In this volume there are but two papers which require explanation. "A Word for Renaissance Churches" was written more than ten years ago, and published a year or two later. My excuse for reprinting it now is that so few writers, in English at least, have dealt with architecture from the point of view of the aesthetic spectator. Our books on architecture treat of this art in the first place from the builder's, and then from the religious person's standpoint, but, except by accident, never from any other. And yet one who is neither an architect, nor an antiquary, nor a churchman may look at a church; and, although he be none of these time-honoured personages, he nevertheless may enjoy the church with the acuteness of a physical sensation. He will carry the remembrance of it with him, and, reviving his emotion in tranquillity, will delve and delve until he fancies he has had a glimpse into the cause of his pleasure. Being this kind of mere spectator, I spent happy years as a youth, wandering over the length and breadth of Italy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Masters and New: Essays in Art Criticism The essays which have been least altered are the earliest ones and the latest; the latter because they express my present mind as I should now express it; the former because it seemed best to leave them their somewhat youthful tone, merely endeavouring that they shall contain no opinions which I do not still hold. The earliest of all in date, that on The' Sculptors of The Early Italian Renaissance, un doubtedly owes its existence, in part, to unconscious memory of an essay of Pater's which I had read some years before. The traces of its origin could not be removed Without removing its truth, for Pater had said what I wanted to say. I can only leave it with the warning that I claim no originality for it. Indeed I care much less that any of my criticisms should be new than that they should be just, and it is likely enough that many of them will be found to coincide with those of other writers whom I may or may not have read. Book The Renaissance in Italian Art Sculpture and Painting Vol 1 of 3

Download or read book The Renaissance in Italian Art Sculpture and Painting Vol 1 of 3 written by Selwyn Brinton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Renaissance in Italian Art (Sculpture and Painting), Vol. 1 of 3: A Handbook for Students and Travellers They become interested in art, they' gain a certain knowledge of certain favourite painters, and there their progress remains; it is to this class, so large and so constantly increasing, in England, on the Continent, and in America, that this work appeals, because it presents a detailed, and yet, it is believed, a clearly-written and interesting account of the Italian schools, studied from that standpoint of evolution, which alone affords a chain of continued interest. In a work of this nature, which is thus essentially popular in its aim, a difficulty occurs in this fact, that points of more purely technical criticism, such, for instance, as the much-debated Rafaelle sketch book question (treated in Part III, Appendix) would affect the straightforward and simple character of the work, and yet in some cases can hardly be passed over. I have tried to meet this difficulty by treating them separately in' the Appendix, which I will none the less commend to the reader's more careful interest. The work will consist of three parts, which will deal, speaking broadly, with the Florentine, Venetian, and, Roman schools, though the lesser schools will find their place in the analysis.
