This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *This Book is annotated (it contains a detailed biography of the author). *An active Table of Contents has been added by the publisher for a better customer experience. *This book has been checked and corrected for spelling errors. In condensing into one compact volume Mr. Irving's elaborate Life of Washington, care has been taken to retain, not only all the important facts connected with Washington's career, but also those circumstances and incidents which may be supposed to contribute to a full estimate of his character in all its aspects. Nor have any portion of the great events connected with the era in which he filled so grand and controlling a part been unduly neglected or subordinated. The work, in its present abbreviated form, still presents a continuous and complete record of American history during the period of Washington's official life. Mr. Irving's language, as a rule, has been retained; but in cases where a variation from his sentences has been necessary, in order to secure the requisite brevity, the paragraphs are enclosed in brackets.

Book excerpt: George Washington: A National Treasurecelebrates our nation's permanent acquisition of Gilbert Stuart's magnificent "Landsdowne" portrait of George Washington. Commissioned For the Marquis of Lansdowne, a British supporter of American independence, The painting shows Washington in the last year of his presidency, 1796. Here is a George Washington For The ages, resolute in the face of the multiple crises of our nation's beginnings; grand in the tradition not of a king but of democracy's representative; civilian rather than military in his authority; and, above all, The embodiment of a nation both stable and free. Today the painting provides a way to think about a time when America's success was by no means certain, about a man whose traits of character became bound up with his nation's fate, and about the expectations for our nation's highest office - the presidency - at the very moment of its creation. Filled with symbols of Washington himself and of the new republic, The painting speaks to Americans today as much as it did in the late eighteenth century. Lavishly illustrated in colour with details of the Lansdowne portrait itself, with other portraits of Washington - contemporary and modern - and with portraits of Washington's colleagues, The book is a treasure in and of itself. Essays reflect on how this remarkable painting explains the nature of Washington and his importance in the national psyche, discuss how Washington came to sit For the Lansdowne painting And The work's ownership throughout the years, and consider Gilbert Stuart's portraits of George Washington and their many copies. A chronology highlights Washington's life and times. Richard Brookhiser is a senior editor at National Review and a columnist For the New York Observer. Margaret C. S. Christman is a historian at the National Portrait Gallery. Ellen G. Miles is curator of painting and sculpture at the National Portrait Gallery.

Book Here George Washington Was Born

Download or read book Here George Washington Was Born written by Seth C. Bruggeman and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2011-08-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Here, George Washington Was Born, Seth C. Bruggeman examines the history of commemoration in the United States by focusing on the George Washington Birthplace National Monument in Virginia's Northern Neck, where contests of public memory have unfolded with particular vigor for nearly eighty years. Washington left the birthplace with his family at a young age and rarely returned. The house burned in 1779 and would likely have passed from memory but for George Washington Parke Custis, who erected a stone marker on the site in 1815, creating the first birthplace monument in America. Both Virginia and the U.S. War Department later commemorated the site, but neither matched the work of a Virginia ladies association that in 1923 resolved to build a replica of the home. The National Park Service permitted construction of the "replica house" until a shocking archeological discovery sparked protracted battles between the two organizations over the building's appearance, purpose, and claims to historical authenticity. Bruggeman sifts through years of correspondence, superintendent logs, and other park records to reconstruct delicate negotiations of power among a host of often unexpected claimants on Washington's memory. By paying close attention to costumes, furnishings, and other material culture, he reveals the centrality of race and gender in the construction of Washington's public memory and reminds us that national parks have not always welcomed all Americans. What's more, Bruggeman offers the story of Washington's birthplace as a cautionary tale about the perils and possibilities of public history by asking why we care about famous birthplaces at all.
