This book was released on 1967 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A continuous complete preference ordering is defined on an arcconnected, topologically separable product space S = S1xS2x.xSn. Call 1,.n sectors and say that a set A of sectors is separable if the conditional ordering on A, given what happens off it, is independent of the latter, essential if it matters what happens on A, at least sometimes, and strictly essential if it always does. It is shown how to determine the structure of the utility function, given a collection of separable sets, when each sector is strictly essential. Various examples are discussed, an alternative approach sketched, and, finally, the requirement of strict essentiality replaced by the basically nugatory condition that each sector be essential. The results can, of course, be applied to other functions, too. (Author).

Book Handbook of Utility Theory

Download or read book Handbook of Utility Theory written by Salvador Barbera and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard rationality hypothesis implies that behaviour can be represented as the maximization of a suitably restricted utility function. This hypothesis lies at the heart of a large body of recent work in economics, of course, but also in political science, ethics, and other major branches of social sciences. Though the utility maximization hypothesis is venerable, it remains an area of active research. Moreover, some fundamental conceptual problems remain unresolved, or at best have resolutions that are too recent to have achieved widespread understanding among social scientists. The main purpose of the Handbook of Utility Theory is to make recent developments in the area more accessible. The editors selected a number of specific topics, and invited contributions from researchers whose work had come to their attention. Therefore, the list of topics and contributions is largely the editors' responsibility. Each contributor's chapter has been refereed, and revised according to the referees' remarks. This is the first volume of a two volume set, with the second volume focusing on extensions of utility theory.

Book Mathematical Topics on Representations of Ordered Structures and Utility Theory

Download or read book Mathematical Topics on Representations of Ordered Structures and Utility Theory written by Gianni Bosi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an essential review of central theories, current research and applications in the field of numerical representations of ordered structures. It is intended as a tribute to Professor Ghanshyam B. Mehta, one of the leading specialists on the numerical representability of ordered structures, and covers related applications to utility theory, mathematical economics, social choice theory and decision-making. Taken together, the carefully selected contributions provide readers with an authoritative review of this research field, as well as the knowledge they need to apply the theories and methods in their own work.

Book Mathematical Utility Theory

Download or read book Mathematical Utility Theory written by Gerhard Herden and published by Springer. This book was released on 1999-06-10 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings volume of an international conference which took place in Essen in October 1997 brings together economists, mathematicians, and psychologists. Their contributions represent new research in the field of mathematical utility theory with an emphasis on its applications in the social sciences. Readers of this volume can inform themselves about novel results in mathematical utility theory and their significance for the social sciences. The contributions cover a spectrum of fields from topological methods in utility theory to the application of experimental methods to utility theory.

Book Utilities as Random Variables Density Estimation and Structure Discovery

Download or read book Utilities as Random Variables Density Estimation and Structure Discovery written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decision theory does not traditionally include uncertainty over utility functions. We argue that the a person's utility value for a given outcome can be treated as we treat other domain attributes: as a random variable with a density function over its possible values. We show that we can apply statistical density estimation techniques to learn such a density function from a database of partially elicited utility functions. In particular, we define a Bayesian learning framework for this problem, assuming the distribution over utilities is a mixture of Gaussians, where the mixture components represent statistically coherent subpopulations. We can also extend our techniques to the problem of discovering generalized additivity structure in the utility functions in the population. We define a Bayesian model selection criterion for utility function structure and a search procedure over structures. The factorization of the utilities in the learned model, and the generalization obtained from density estimation, allows us to provide robust estimates of utilities using a significantly smaller number of utility elicitation questions. We experiment with our technique on synthetic utility data and on a real database of utility functions in the domain of prenatal diagnosis.

Book Utility Functions for Mild and Severe Health Risks

Download or read book Utility Functions for Mild and Severe Health Risks written by W. Kip Viscusi and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article reviews economic evidence on health-dependent utility functions and presents new estimates of utility functions for cancer. Estimates of health-dependent utility functions have found that mild adverse health impacts can be treated as monetary equivalents. Severe health consequences also reduce utility levels but have an additional effect of altering the structure of utility functions by reducing the marginal utility of income. The implications of past studies are often misleading when they fail to account for income losses and medical expenses associated with serious ailments. This article's estimates of the structure of utility functions for cancer indicate a substantially lower marginal utility of income at any given income level. This result is consistent with the welfare consequences of other severe health effects, which impose harms that are not tantamount to a monetary loss.

Book Decomposition of Multiattribute Utility Functions

Download or read book Decomposition of Multiattribute Utility Functions written by Ralph L. Keeney and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given N + 1 attributes, various sets of preferential independence and utility independence assumptions among the last N attributes imply that the utility function can be written as a function whose arguments consist of the first attribute and utility functions on each of the other N attributes. Implications of such independence assumptions over overlapping sets of attributes and in hierarchical structures of attributes are considered. The basic ideas are then extended to what will be referred to as conditional preferential independence and conditional utility independence. All of the conditions examined serve to simplify the assessment of multiattribute utility functions. (Author).
