Book The Structure of Three dimensional Separated Flows in Obstacle boundary Layer Interactions

Download or read book The Structure of Three dimensional Separated Flows in Obstacle boundary Layer Interactions written by Raymond Sedney and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject is investigated with flow visualization techniques; the turbulent boundary layer on the wall of a continuous supersonic wind tunnel is used. Sizeable separated flow regions can be studied since the wall width is 38cm and the boundary layer is typically 2.5cm thick. The large scale of the experiment is required to resolve the fine details of the flow structure. The flow visualization techniques are discussed. The structure of the separated flow upstream of the obstacle is seen to change with relatively small changes in Reynolds number R; the number of vortices varies from 6 to 4 to 2 as R changes. Data are presented for large and small protuberances, but the latter are emphasized.

Book Three dimensional Separated Flow Topology

Download or read book Three dimensional Separated Flow Topology written by Jean Délery and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-02-25 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops concepts and a methodology for a rational description of the organization of three-dimensional flows considering, in particular, the case where the flow is the place of separations. The descriptive analysis based on the critical point theory of Poincaré develops conventional but rather unfamiliar considerations from aerodynamicists, who face the understanding of complex flows including multiple separation lines and vortices. These problems concern industrial sectors where aerodynamics plays a key role, such as aerospace, ground vehicles, buildings, etc. Contents 1. Skin Friction Lines Pattern and Critical Points. 2. Separation Streamsurfaces and Vortex Structures. 3. Separated Flow on a Body. 4. Vortex Wake of Wings and Slender Bodies. 5. Separation Induced by an Obstacle or a Blunt Body. 6. Reconsideration of the Two-Dimensional Separation. 7. Concluding Remarks. About the Authors Jean Délery is a Supaero (French National Higher School of Aeronautics and Space) engineer who has worked at Onera (French national aerospace research center) since 1964. He has participated in several major French and European aerospace programs, is the author of many scientific publications, and has occupied various teaching positions particularly at Supaero, the University of Versailles-Saint-Quentin, Ecole polytechnique in France and “La Sapienza” University in Rome, Italy. He is currently emeritus adviser at Onera.

Book High Speed Flow Separation Ahead of Finite Span Steps

Download or read book High Speed Flow Separation Ahead of Finite Span Steps written by Louis G. Kaufman and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed surface heat transfer data, oil flow, and schlieren photographs are presented for high speed flow separation ahead of finite span, forward facing steps on flat plates. Step spans were varied from three to ten times as large as the step height, and the step heights are three to four times larger than the undisturbed turbulent boundary layer thickness. Reynolds numbers, based on plate length, were approximately 15 million for both Mach 4.75 and Mach 5.04 local undisturbed flows over the flat plate surface. For these test conditions, the maximum extent of separation ahead of the step is approximately 4.4 times as large as the step height independent of step span, and peak heating rates were measured that are more than six to eight times larger than the undisturbed flow heating rates. Peak heating on the plate surface occurs slightly upstream and approximately 1/2 step height inboard of the outboard sides of the steps; the increase in peak heat transfer coefficients over the undisturbed flow values decreases with increasing step span. In addition to presenting the detailed surface heat transfer data, a plausible theoretical analysis is presented for calculating the region of turbulent boundary layer separation ahead of these finite span steps.

Book Shock Wave Boundary Layer Interactions

Download or read book Shock Wave Boundary Layer Interactions written by Holger Babinsky and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-12 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock wave-boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) is a fundamental phenomenon in gas dynamics that is observed in many practical situations, ranging from transonic aircraft wings to hypersonic vehicles and engines. SBLIs have the potential to pose serious problems in a flowfield; hence they often prove to be a critical - or even design limiting - issue for many aerospace applications. This is the first book devoted solely to a comprehensive, state-of-the-art explanation of this phenomenon. It includes a description of the basic fluid mechanics of SBLIs plus contributions from leading international experts who share their insight into their physics and the impact they have in practical flow situations. This book is for practitioners and graduate students in aerodynamics who wish to familiarize themselves with all aspects of SBLI flows. It is a valuable resource for specialists because it compiles experimental, computational and theoretical knowledge in one place.

Book Heat Transfer and Flow Structure in End Wall Boundary Layers

Download or read book Heat Transfer and Flow Structure in End Wall Boundary Layers written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical, numerical, and experimental stndies have documented the flow development and surface heat transfer for several three dimensional end-wall flows, and indicate the presence of highly unsteady vortex formation within the end-wall boundary layer. This vortex formation process leads rapidly to the evolution of three dimensional separation effects which have a profound influence on the surface heat transfer. Analysis of the three dimensional behavior indicates the presence of persistent and strong interactions between the end-wall boundary layers on both the surface and the side-wall boundary layers of the obstacle. A detailed series of Navier-Stokes calculations have been carried out for a vortex-induced motion similar to that encountered in turbulent boundary layers. As the Reynolds number is increased, a new type of instability associated with surface layer separation was found which leads to brealmp of the surface layer. Experimentally, laminar approach flows always develop discrete, periodic necklace vortices in the junction region, whereas a turbulent approach yields a dominant necklace or horseshoe-shaped vortex that moves chaotically. Examinations of the complex fluid/heat transfer processes using PIV and thermochiomic liquid crystals shows that these junction vortices undergo very strong surface interactions, which creates strongly focused "eruptions" of surface fluid; these studies show a direct correlation between the eruptive processes and local regions of high heat transfer.
