Download or read book The Importance of Establishment Data in Economic Research written by Robert H. McGuckin and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance and usefulness of establishment microdata for economic research and policy analysis is outlined and contrasted with traditional products of statistical agencies -- aggregate cross-section tabulations. It is argued that statistical agencies must begin to seriously rethink the way they view establishment data products.

Book Gender Segregation in Small Firms

Download or read book Gender Segregation in Small Firms written by William J. Carrington and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies interfirm gender segregation in a unique sample of small employers. It was found that interfirm segregation is prevalent among small employers, as men and women rarely work in fully integrated firms. It was also found that the education and sex of the business owner strongly influenced the sex composition of a firm's workforce. The authors estimate that interfirm segregation can account for up to 50 percent of the gender gap in annual earnings.

Book Manufacturing Establishments Reclassified Into New Industries

Download or read book Manufacturing Establishments Reclassified Into New Industries written by Robert H. McGuckin and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Establishment reclassification occurs when an establishment classified in one industry in one year is reclassified into another industry in another year. Because of survey design rules at the Census Bureau these reclassifications occur systematically over time, and affect the industry-level time series of output and employment. The evidence shows that reclassified establishments occur most often in two distinct years over the life of a sample panel. Switches are not only numerous in these years, they also contribute significantly to measured industry change in industry output and employment. The problem is that reclassifications are not necessarily processed in the year that they occur. The survey rules restrict most change to certain years. The effect of these rules is evidenced by looking at the variance across industry growth rates which increases greatly in these two years. Whatever the reason for reclassifying an establishment, the way the switches are processed raises the possibility of measurement errors in the industry level statistics. Researchers and policymakers relying upon observations in annual changes in industry statistics should be aware of these systematic discontinuities, discrepancies and potential data distortions.

Book Downsizing and Productivity Growth

Download or read book Downsizing and Productivity Growth written by Martin Neil Baily and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conventional wisdom is that the rising productivity in the U.S. manufacturing sector in the 1980s has been driven by the apparently pervasive downsizing over this period. Aggregate evidence clearly shows falling employment accompanying the rise in productivity. In this paper, we examine the microeconomic evidence using the plant level data from the Longitudinal Research Database (LRD). In contrast to the conventional wisdom, we find that plants that increased employment as well as productivity contribute almost as much to overall productivity growth in the 1980s as the plants that increased productivity at the expense of employment. Further, there are striking differences by sector (defined by industry, size, region, wages, and ownership type) in the allocation of plants in terms of whether they upsize or downsize and whether they increase or decrease productivity. Nevertheless, in spite of the striking differences across sectors defined in a variety of ways, most of the variance of productivity and employment growth is accounted for by idiosyncratic factors.

Book A Comparison of Job Creation and Job Destruction in Canada and the United States

Download or read book A Comparison of Job Creation and Job Destruction in Canada and the United States written by John Russel Baldwin and published by Statistics Canada, Analytical Studies Branch. This book was released on 1994 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides a description and detailed comparison of new data series on job creation and job destruction, constructed using establishment-level data sets, for the United States and Canada. The paper begins with a description of the data sets used and discussion of measurement issues related to job flows. It then examines and compares time-series fluctuations of job creation and destruction in the two countries and disaggregates average annual rates of job creation and destructed by two-digit industry. The subsequent section of the paper develops a simple model of the dynamics of job creation and destruction in order to provide structure for interpreting the similarities and differences in the behavior of job flows in Canada and the United States. The paper ends with basic estimates of the relative importance of country, industry, and year effects.
