Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Structure of Morale The logical way in which to begin a discussion of fear would be to say just what fear was. That, however, is beyond me and, I believe, something that no psychologist can do - at least to the satisfaction of other psychologists. No more can he define 'love'. The layman may be surprised at this because, of course, he knows. But the specialist is often at such a disadvantage. In his famous lecture on The Name and Nature of Poetry Professor Housman said: 'poetry indeed Seems to me more physical than intellectual. A year or two ago, in common with others, I received from America 'a request that I would define poetry. I replied that I could no more define poetry than a terrie'r could define a rat, but that I thought we both recognized the object by the symptoms which it provokes in us.' We all of us know what it is to be frightened. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Morale is one of those things that everybody understands, and that nobody understands The will of the country is unshakable, we say. The Spirit of the people was never finer. The nation has supreme confidence in its leaders. All along the line the men are on fighting edge. The enemy is losing his nerve. Will, spirit, confidence, nerve, fight ing edge: everybody knows what these things mean. But what is the common something back of them all? Where does it come from? Is it simple in nature, or complex? What fosters it? What impairs it? These are questions not every one is ready to answer. Yet they are questions, some of them, of supreme moment to both soldier and citizen. This matter of morale, then, is worth looking into a little further. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Morale: The Supreme Standard of Life and Conduct The first draft of nearly half this present volume was printed in the Psychological Bulletin (vol. XV, N o. This part was somewhat radically revised, and the substance of the volume as it now stands was given in weekly lectures in Clark University during the year 1918-19. I 'hope that this concise survey of these very diverse fields may be considered as a plea for a new and more inclusive standard of the evaluation of not only individuals but of human organizations, and I would fain hope it may be worthy of a place as a textbook in some of our higher institutions of learn ing, perhaps in place of the types of ethics now in use. Our ideals of conscience, honor, and morals generally have not accomplished all we have hoped for. Why not try the standard of Morale here sug gested as more fitting for the conditions of modern life? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Structure of Moral Revolutions

Download or read book The Structure of Moral Revolutions written by Robert Baker and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical account of moral revolutions, illustrated by historical cases that include the criminalization and decriminalization of abortion and the patient rebellion against medical paternalism. We live in an age of moral revolutions in which the once morally outrageous has become morally acceptable, and the formerly acceptable is now regarded as reprehensible. Attitudes toward same-sex love, for example, and the proper role of women, have undergone paradigm shifts over the last several decades. In this book, Robert Baker argues that these inversions are the product of moral revolutions that follow a pattern similar to that of the scientific revolutions analyzed by Thomas Kuhn in his influential book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. After laying out the theoretical terrain, Baker develops his argument with examples of moral reversals from the recent and distant past. He describes the revolution, led by the utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham, that transformed the postmortem dissection of human bodies from punitive desecration to civic virtue; the criminalization of abortion in the nineteenth century and its decriminalization in the twentieth century; and the invention of a new bioethics paradigm in the 1970s and 1980s, supporting a patient-led rebellion against medical paternalism. Finally, Baker reflects on moral relativism, arguing that the acceptance of “absolute” moral truths denies us the diversity of moral perspectives that permit us to alter our morality in response to changing environments.

Book Morale and Its Enemies Classic Reprint

Download or read book Morale and Its Enemies Classic Reprint written by William Ernest Hocking and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Morale and Its Enemies War carries the naiads as well as the bodies of men into strange paths, and so creates an unwonted need for self-understanding. At the same time, the power and the leisure for self-understanding are diminished. Men, as well as nations, must choose their part quickly, discern their friends and their enemies, revise all plans, leap to strange tasks at the call of the moment, though all the questions of politics and of metaphysics are involved in the deed. And while the decision reached may reveal the solvency or insolvency of the soul that issues it, the need to bring together the fragments of one's mental life remains, and will remain for long after the war is past. This book is an attempt to help - the soldier first, and also the civilian - in this task of understanding one's own mind, under the special stresses of war. There must be many such attempts, from different angles of experience: one can only contribute from his own angle, that of the student of human nature and of philosophy, aided by certain special opportunities which I owe to the courtesy of the Foreign Offices of Great Britain and France. Book The Moral Electricity of Print

Download or read book The Moral Electricity of Print written by Ronald Briggs and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best Nineteenth-Century Book Award Winner, 2018, Latin American Studies Association Nineteenth-Century Section Moral electricity—a term coined by American transcendentalists in the 1850s to describe the force of nature that was literacy and education in shaping a greater society. This concept wasn't strictly an American idea, of course, and Ronald Briggs introduces us to one of the greatest examples of this power: the literary scene in Lima, Peru, in the nineteenth century. As Briggs notes in the introduction to The Moral Electricity of Print, "the ideological glue that holds the American hemisphere together is a hope for the New World as a grand educational project combined with an anxiety about the baleful influence of a politically and morally decadent Old World that dominated literary output through its powerful publishing interests." The very nature of living as a writer and participating in the literary salons of Lima was, by definition, a revolutionary act that gave voice to the formerly colonized and now liberated people. In the actions of this literary community, as men and women worked toward the same educational goals, we see the birth of a truly independent Latin American literature.

Book Primer of Morals

Download or read book Primer of Morals written by Montague R. Leverson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primer of Morals: For Use in Schools and Families In "Common Sense, or First Steps in Political Economy," the author evolved the virtues of industry, skill, economy, honesty, and general trustworthiness, from an objective examination of man in society, and proved them essential to human well-being and the happiness of the individual. On this basis of moral science was established the structure of political economy which he presented in that work in a form adapted to the understanding of the young. That political, or, as it is better termed, social, economy should be not merely connected with but actually founded upon moral science, will no doubt surprise those who have studied economic science only from the text-books ordinarily used in our colleges, or from the elaborate works of the masters of the science. Book The Moral Condition and Development of the Child Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Moral Condition and Development of the Child Classic Reprint written by W. Arter Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Moral Condition and Development of the Child IT was a saying of Borden Parker Bowne that, although a sound philosophy might conceivably be of no benefit to the world, there could be no doubt of the real damage done by an unsound philosophy. With even greater emphasis might one say this of theological dogma; for in no other field has the lust for system at the expense of life borne more bitter fruit. And good men have sel dom strayed further than when, under the ty ranny of the a priori, they have essayed to extend their deductions to the moral and religious status of the child. Not the least of the merits of the following discussion, while the author makes no claim of be ing a specialist in psychology, is his appreciation of the bearing of psychology upon his subject. The point of View and the method of approach adopted by the psychologist bring to light ma terial that may be obtained in no other way. And no safe theological structure can be built without this material. The child-mind and the child-life have their own secrets to tell, and they only learn these who patiently ask what the facts are, and not what the facts ought to be.
