Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an extensive and highly original inquiry into the origins, dynamics, and internal order of the modern metropolis. Allen J. This book was released on 2015-06-23 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Globalization and New Intra Urban Dynamics in Asian Cities written by Natacha Aveline-Dubach、Sue-Ching Jou、Hsin-Huang Michael Hsiao等 著 and published by 國立臺灣大學出版中心. This book was released on 2014-08-04 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a set of essays on the globalization and intra-urban dynamics of the Asian cities conducted by Taiwanese and French researchers. It covers four main themes: “culture-led regeneration projects,” “dynamics of second-tier cities,” “urban redevelopment and land issues,” and “new urban spaces of regulation, associational life, and civic action.” It involved comparing research subject priorities in this field as well as the approaches chosen to deal with them within a geographical zone extended from Northeast to southern Asia. Rather than a comparison between Western and Asian visions of the same urban objects, the project aimed to highlight differences and/or similarities in the approaches of scientific communities, inevitably influenced by national issues. With great articulation and discourse between urban reality and theories, it also observes distinctive approaches of urban research teams respectively in France and Taiwan.

He approaches the topic of urban growth and decline within a global system perspective, viewing the rise and fall of cities, industries and nations as the result of global interdependencies which lead to unstable dynamics and widespread dualisms. Professor Dendrinos provides valuable insights into the evolution of human settlements and considers the possible futures open to the giant cities of the world.
Download or read book Urban Structure and the Labour Market written by Wayne Simpson and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, most people live and work in cities and as a result, most social and economic issues have a significant urban dimension. Considerable attention has been devoted to understanding where and how residential location affects urban activity, yet little of this effort has been directed to work and what determines location choices in cities. This study addresses this question by providing a theory based on modern labor economics, which complements the residential location theory at the core of recent urban studies. It analyzes the importance of workplace location in assessing matters of spatial structure, commuting patterns, underemployment, and the formation of urban ghettoes. The book lucidly blends theoretical analysis with empirical evidence, especially that from transportation survey data.

Download or read book On Hollywood written by Allen J. Scott and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is the U.S. motion picture industry concentrated in Hollywood and why does it remain there in the age of globalization? Allen Scott uses the tools of economic geography to explore these questions and to provide a number of highly original answers. The conceptual roots of his analysis go back to Alfred Marshall's theory of industrial districts and pick up on modern ideas about business clusters as sites of efficient and innovative production. On Hollywood builds on this work by adding major new empirical elements. By examining the history of motion-picture production from the early twentieth century to the present through this analytic lens, Scott is able to show why the industry (which was initially focused on New York) had shifted the majority of its production to Southern California by 1919. He also addresses in detail the bases of Hollywood's long-standing creative energies and competitive advantages. At the same time, the book explores the steady globalization of Hollywood's market reach as well as the cultural and political dilemmas posed by this phenomenon. On Hollywood will appeal not only to general readers with an interest in the motion-picture industry, but also to economic geographers, business professionals, regional development practitioners, and cultural theorists as well.
